AbhinuOS is a personal operating system project focused on learning, experimentation, and low-level system development. The project explores two different approaches to OS design:
- A Linux-based distribution, customized and repackaged for experimentation and usability.
- A custom operating system written entirely in C, using the Limine bootloader, built from scratch to understand how operating systems work at a fundamental level.
This repository acts both as a learning playground and a technical showcase.
- Understand the boot process (UEFI/BIOS, bootloaders, kernel loading)
- Learn kernel development and low-level programming in C
- Experiment with ISO creation, boot media, and filesystem layouts
- Explore how Linux distributions are structured and customized
- Build real, bootable systems instead of just theoretical code
AbhinuOS is not meant to replace existing operating systems. It exists to learn how they are built.
- Built on top of an existing Linux distribution
- Uses GRUB as the primary bootloader
- Custom ISO layout and installer behavior
- Designed for daily-use experimentation, testing, and customization
This edition focuses on understanding:
- Initramfs and kernel boot flow
- ISO repacking and live environments
- GRUB configuration and loopback booting
- System installation vs live environments
- Fully custom operating system
- Written in C
- Uses Limine as the bootloader
- ELF kernel loaded directly by Limine
- No Linux kernel involved
This edition focuses on:
- Bare-metal development
- Boot protocols and memory maps
- Kernel entry points and early initialization
- Hardware abstraction and system bring-up
- GRUB is used for the Linux-based edition
- Limine is used for the custom kernel edition
Both UEFI and BIOS boot paths are explored depending on the edition and build configuration.
⚠️ This project is experimental. Things may break.
Typical tools used:
xorrisofor ISO generationqemu-system-x86_64for testing- GCC / Clang cross-compilers for kernel builds
- Limine utilities for bootloader setup
QEMU is recommended for testing before real hardware.
The project is primarily tested using QEMU with both BIOS and UEFI firmware. Real hardware testing is possible but not recommended unless you know what you’re doing.
- Actively developed and experimented on
- Features may be incomplete or unstable
- Expect rough edges and broken things
This is normal and intentional for a learning-focused OS project.
Contributions are welcome!
You can help by:
- Improving documentation
- Fixing bugs
- Cleaning up code
- Experimenting with new features
- Improving build scripts
- Reporting issues
