FRENCH VERBS
THE PRESENT TENSE
• There are five main kinds of verbs in French:
• Regular –ER like parler (to talk)
• Regular –IR like finir (to finish)
• Regular –RE like vendre (to sell)
• stem-changing (example later on)
• Irregular (they end with -ER, -IR or -RE but don’t follow the
regular rules of conjugation) like avoir (to have), aller (to
go), faire (to do, to make), and être (to be),
The majority of French verbs are regular -ER verbs.

Conjugating a verb…..
Each subject/pronoun corresponds to a matching form of the
verb. These differences in the forms happen at the end of the
verb itself. For example:
How to conjugate a regular –ER
verb
• For example, take the verb “parler” (to speak)
• Remove the “er” – this will give you what is called “the stem” in
grammatical jargon.
• Parler – er = parl
• To the stem, add the ending corresponding the the subject pronoun
• Je = stem + e = je parle
• Tu = stem + es = tu parles
• Il, elle, on = stem + e = il, elle, on parle
• Nous = stem + ons = nous parlons
• Vous = stem + ez = vous parlez
• Ils, elles + stem + ent = ils, elles parlent
Conjugating a verb…..
SO Conjugation means that you need to change the verb
according to each pronoun in the tense required (in this case
PRESENT tense).
There are 6 different pronouns you need to know when you
conjugate a French verb.
Beware when translating from
English to French!!
• Je marche = I walk/ I am walking
• I am eating/ I eat an apple :
• Je suis mange une pomme = WRONG!!! XXX
• Je mange une pomme. = CORRECT!!
