WORDS THAT ARE BOTH NOUNS AND VERBS
JOSEPH TOPERSON
CHAPTER 1: WORDS THAT ARE BOTH NOUNS AND
VERBS
📘 Introduction
Some English words can function both as nouns and as verbs.
➡ That means one word, but two different meanings — depending on
how it’s used in a sentence.
⚙ Rules to Remember
1. Stress (accent tonique)
— When the word is a noun, we stress the first syllable.
👉 Example: REfund
— When the word is a verb, we stress the last syllable.
👉 Example: reFUND
🗣Stress means which part of the word is said louder or longer.
> ⚡ En français : “le stress” est la syllabe sur laquelle on met l’accent,
c’est-à-dire celle qu’on prononce plus fort ou plus longtemps.
Examples:
— I would like a REfund for my apple. → (Noun) → Je voudrais un
remboursement pour ma pomme.
— Will you reFUND your money on another date? → (Verb) → Vas-tu
rembourser ton argent à une autre date ?
2. Speed of pronunciation
Nouns are often pronounced more slowly.
Verbs are usually said faster.
Examples:
Noun Verb
REfund reFUND
INcrease inCREASE
PERmit perMIT
INsult inSULT
DEcrease deCREASE
REfill reFILL
REject reJECT
3. Grammar clue
— If you see an article (a, an, the) before the word → it’s a noun.
👉 a permit, the refund
— If you see an infinitive marker (to) before the word → it’s a verb.
👉 to permit, to refund
