LA NÉGATION
(THE NEGATIVE EXPRESSIONS)
General Rules:
Basic negation is formed by placing ne (before the verb) and pas (after the verb).
Ne becomes n' if the verb is beginning with a vowel.
If there are 2 verbs, we keep the negative expression (ne ....... pas) with the first verb.
In negative sentences un, une, des, du, de la, de l’ changes to de/ d'. But the rule is not
applicable with verb être.
NEGATIVE EXPRESSIONS

Example : Tu aimes les chocolats Tu n'aimes pas les chocolats.
ne ........... pas de (ne + verbe + pas de)
Example : Tu aimes des chocolats Tu n'aimes pas de chocolats.
Note: All the indefinite articles (un, une, des) and Partitif Articles (du, de la, des, de l') are
changed to de / d' when we change the sentence to negative. This rule is applicable on all types
of sentences except the ones with verb être.
