Forming Questions
Questions are formed in French in the following ways:
I. by changing the period of a statement to a question m ark and using a rising intonation.
Statement Question
Marie parle fran^ais. Marie parle fran^ais?
Vous avez bien dormi. V’ous avez bien dormi?
II se reveille. II se reveille?
2. by adding n’est-ce pas? to an affirmative sentence. An affirmative answer is usually expected.
Statement Question
Tu vas au musee. Tu vas au musee, n’est-ce pas?
II est arrive. II est arrive, n’est-ce pas?
Elle se debrouille. EHe se debrouille, n’est-ce pas?
3. by adding est-ce que or est-ce qu’ (before vowels) at the beginning o f the statement and changing tl
period to a question mark.
Statement Question
Pierre nous parlera. Est-ce que Pierre nous parlera?
II se rase. Est-ce qu’il se rase?
Elle s'est bien habillee. Est-ce qu'elle s'est bien habillee?

Interrogative Forms by Inversion—Simple Tenses
Questions m ay be formed by inverting a pronoun subject and the verb o f declarative sentences.
The subject is connected to the verb with a hyphen.
Statement Question
Tu vas a Londres. Vas-tu a Londres?
Vous parlez fran9ais. Parlez-vous frangais?
Nous nous levons. Nous levons-nous?
Vous vous debrouillez bien. Vous debrouillez-vous bien?
When inverting a third person singular subject and a verb, a t must be inserted between the
inverted verb and the subject if the verb ends in a vowel. The t is connected to the verb with hyphens.
Statement Question
II parle frangais. Parle-t-il franyais?
II se leve. Se leve-t-il?
But:
II ecrit. Ecrit-il?
Inversion is usualh not used with je. Instead, use est-ce que.
Est-ce que je parle bien?
When inversion is used with the first person singular verb that ends in a mute e, the e IS replaced by e.
Je parle franyais. Parle-je franyais?
J ’ose le faire. Ose-je le faire?
Inversion with je is permitted with certain often-used verbs.
Suis-je intelligent?
Ai-je raison?
Que sais-je?
Puis-je vous aider?
Note that peux becomes puis in inversion with je.
When inverting with a noun subject, state the noun, then the verb, then the pronoun.

Complex inversion is obligatory
1. after pourquoi when the subject is a noun.

Interrogative Forms by Inversion—Compound Tenses
In compound tenses, the subject pronoun and the auxiliary verb are inverted.
Statement Question

Following are common interrogative words used to introduce questions.
Ou? Where? Combien? How many?
Quand? When? Pourquoi? Why?
Comment? How? A quelle heure? A t what time?
Study the following.

Quand arrivera-t-elle? When is she arriving?
Comment va-t-il? How is he?
Combien de livres y a-t-il sur la table? How many books are there on the table?

Pourquoi pleure-t-elle? Why is she crying?

Interrogative Pronouns
The interrogative pronouns are:

Note that there is no short form for qu’est-ce qui.

Qui is never joined to a following word beginning with a vowel. Que becomes qu’ before a word
beginning with a vowel.
Qui avez-vous vu? Whom did you see?
Qu’avez-vous vu? What did you see?
Que can be used as a predicate.
Qu’est-il sans sa famille?
What is he without his fam ily?
Qu’est-ce qu’un diner sans vin.’

Avec qui avez-vous parle? With whom did you speak?
Avec quoi ecrit-il? With what does he write?
A qui, meaning whose, is used to denote ownership for persons.
A qui sont ces livres? Whose hooks are these?
De qui is used to denote relationship to someone.
De qui est-il le fils? Whose son is he?
Quoi can be used without a verb in certain idiomatic expressions.
Quoi de neuf? 1 , ,
Quoidenouveau? / What s new?
Quoi can also be used alone.
Quoi? Vous voulez me voir?
What? You want to see me?
The third person singular form o f the verb is usually used with qui, qui est-ce qui and qu’est-ce qui
even when a plural answer is expected.
Qui vient?
Paul et Marie viennent.
When qui is a predicate nominative, the verb can be in the plural.
Qui etes-vous?

The interrogative adjective quel (what) agrees with the noun it modifies.

The interrogative adjective can be the subject of the verb etre except when it refers to a person.
Then qui is used.
Quelle est votre adresse? What is your address?
Qui est votre amie? Who is your friend?

The forms of lequel make the normal contractions with a or de.
