Capitalization in French
The use of capital letters is much less common in French than in English. Unless these words begin a
sentence, capital letters are not used in French for:
1. Days of the week and months of the year.
For example: Je visite Paris samedi – I am visiting Paris on Saturday.
2. The first person singular subject pronoun is always capitalized in English but not in French.
For example: Oui, je suis malade – Yes, I am sick.
3. Languages are never capitalized in French.
For example: Il parle anglais, français et allemand – He speaks English, French and German.
4. Geographical names
Geographical words used with proper nouns are not capitalized in French.
For example: Balzac Street – La rue Balzac
Mediterranean Sea – La mer Méditerranée
Pacific Ocean – L’océan Pacifique
5. Nationalities
French adjectives that refer to nationalities are not capitalized but nationalities used as proper
nouns are capitalized.
For example: Je suis indien – I am Indian
But, J’ai rencontré un Indien – I met an Indian
NOTE: Since Indien is preceded by the article ‘’un’’ , so it is a proper noun and it is going to be
capitalized. (We are talking about a community in this case)
NOTE: 1. Je suis francais. (I am French)
In the above sentence, francais is an adjective as nationalities are adjectives. Please remember that French adjectives
that refer to nationalities are written in small letters.
2. All languages are masculine in French and they are written in small letters
Le francais = French (language) , L'anglais = English, L'allemand = German
3. With the verb parler, we do not use the article with languages.
So, I speak French will be Je parle francais.
4. Please note that nationalities can also be used as proper nouns and in that case they are capitalised.
For example: Le Francais = The Frenchman man
