Adverbs - lesson
L'adverbe est un mot invariable qui précise ou change le sens d'un verbe, d'un adjectif,
ou d'un autre adverbe.
The adverb is an invariable word that specifies or changes the meaning of a verb, an adjective,
or another adverb.
● Elle court rapidement.
She runs quickly.
-> ("rapidement" (quickly) specifies the meaning of the verb "courir" (to run)).
● Il n'est pas très grand.
He is not very tall.
-> ("très" (very) modifies the meaning of the adjective "grand" (tall)).
● Nous jouons assez bien.
We play quite well.
-> ("assez" (quite) modifies the meaning of the adverb "bien" (well)).
On le reconnaît facilement dans une phrase car, si on l'enlève, la phrase reste correcte.
Elle est incomplète, mais correcte.
It can be easily recognized in a sentence because, if removed, the sentence remains correct. It
is incomplete, but correct.
Exemple :
Hier, Laurent a bien dormi, il a vraisemblablement récupéré.
Yesterday, Laurent slept well, he likely recovered.
En retirant les adverbes, nous obtenons :
By removing the adverbs, we get:
Laurent a dormi, il a récupéré.
Laurent slept, he recovered.
The Nature of the Adverb
La nature de l'adverbe
Un adverbe peut être :
An adverb can be:
● un mot : ici, hier, jamais, bien, assez, peu...
a word: here, yesterday, never, well, quite, little...
● une locution adverbiale : ne... Pas, au fur et à mesure, tout à coup...
an adverbial phrase: not, gradually, all of a sudden...
● un mot terminé par -ment : calmement, bruyamment, prudemment...
a word ending in -ly: calmly, noisily, carefully...
The Different Categories of Adverbs
Les différentes catégories d'adverbes :
● Adverbes de manière :
adverbs of manner:
ainsi, bien, comme, comment, debout, ensemble, exprès, mal, mieux, plutôt, vite,
volontiers...
like this, well, like, how, standing, together, on purpose, badly, better, rather, fast,
willingly...
● Adverbes de quantité et d'intensité :
adverbs of quantity and intensity:
assez, aussi, autant, beaucoup, combien, comment, davantage, environ, guère,
mais, moins, pas mal, peu, plus, presque, quelque, si, tant, tout, tout à fait,
tellement, très, trop...
quite, also, as much, a lot, how much, how, more, around, hardly, but, less, not bad, little,
more, almost, some, so, so much, all, completely, so much, very, too much...
● Adverbes de temps :
adverbs of time:
alors, après, après-demain, aujourd'hui, auparavant, aussitôt, autrefois, avant,
avant-hier, bientôt, déjà, demain, depuis, désormais, dorénavant, encore, enfin,
ensuite, hier, jadis, jamais, longtemps, lors, maintenant, naguère, parfois, puis,
quand? quelquefois, sitôt, soudain, souvent, tantôt, tard, tôt, toujours...
then, after, the day after tomorrow, today, before, immediately, formerly, before, the day
before yesterday, soon, already, tomorrow, since, from now on, henceforth, again, finally,
next, yesterday, long ago, never, a long time, when, now, recently, sometimes, then,
when, sometimes, soon, suddenly, often, soon, late, early, always...
● Adverbes de lieu :
adverbs of place:
ailleurs, alentour, arrière, autour, avant, contre, dedans, dehors, derrière, dessous,
dessus, devant, ici, là, loin, où, partout, près, proche...
elsewhere, around, back, around, in front, against, inside, outside, behind, below, above,
in front, here, there, far, where, everywhere, near, nearby...
● Adverbes d'affirmation :
adverbs of affirmation:
assurément, aussi, certainement, bien, certes, oui, précisément, que si, sans
doute, si, soit, volontiers, vraiment...
surely, also, certainly, well, indeed, yes, precisely, if, without doubt, yes, so be it, willingly,
really...
● Adverbes de négation :
adverbs of negation:
non, aucun, aucunement, nullement, jamais, rien, personne...
no, none, not at all, not at all, never, nothing, no one...
● Adverbes de doute :
adverbs of doubt:
apparemment, peut-être, probablement, sans doute, vraisemblablement...
apparently, maybe, probably, without doubt, likely...
How to Recognize an Adverb in -ment
Comment reconnaître un adverbe en -ment
Les adverbes en -ment se construisent à partir d'un adjectif :
Adverbs in -ly are formed from an adjective:
1. Premier cas : à partir d'un adjectif au féminin
First case: from a feminine adjective
Vif => vive => vivement
Lively => lively => lively
2. Deuxième cas : à partir d'un adjectif terminé par -ant
Second case: from an adjective ending in -ant
Méchant => méchamment
Naughty => nastily
3. Troisième cas : à partir d'un adjectif terminé par -ent
Third case: from an adjective ending in -ent
Violent => violemment
Violent => violently
Exercice : Complétez les phrases avec l’adverbe approprié. Choisissez parmi les options
ci-dessous : calmement, souvent, bien, tôt, rapidement, ici, jamais, très, peut-être, vivement
1. Nous nous levons ______ le matin pour faire du sport.

Exercice : Écrivez quel catégorie fait partie chaque adverbes dans les phrases suivantes:
1. Dehors il fait très froid, restons à la maison au coin du feu.
2. Je suis sans doute trop impulsive.
3. Tu as certainement raison, je n'en doute pas.
4. Je n'ai jamais dit cela, c'est complètement faux !
5. Ne restez pas debout prenez une chaise.
6. Vous avez beaucoup d'enfants dans votre classe.
7. Auparavant , je demeurais dans le midi.
8. Nous partirons ensemble , cet été en vacances.
9. Ensuite , je me suis installée dans le centre de la France.
10. Je n'ai nullement l'intention d'aller à cette réunion.
