• What is the most stable nucleus?
We give: mp = 1.0078 uma
mn = 1.0087 uma
Exercise 2

1.6749 10-24 g and me = 9.109 10-28 g.
1. Define the unit of atomic mass and give its value in kilograms.
2. Express the masses of these particles in atomic mass units (u)
3. Calculate in units of atomic mass (u) and in kilograms (kg) the mass of: A molecule of water,
a mole of water, a molecule of CaCO3, 0,4 mol of CaCO3,
Data: Molar mass (g/mol): H = 1; C = 12; O = 16; Ca = 40
Exercise 3
1. How many moles and atoms are there in: 6 g Fe; 6 g C; 6 g Ag
2. Calculate the mass in grams of: 1.52 mol Cu; 1.52 mol Na; 1.52 mol Au
3. How many moles and Fe and S atoms are there in a 0.5 kg sample of pyrite “FeS2”.
4. Which of the following samples contains the most Iron atoms: 0.2 mol Fe 2(SO4)3; 20 g Fe;
2.5 1023 Fe atom
Data: Molar mass (g/mol): C = 12; O = 16; Na = 2.3; S = 32; Fe = 56; Ag = 108; Au = 197.
Exercise 4
𝟏𝟒𝟎
Consider the following two atoms: 𝟐𝟑𝟓 𝟗𝟐𝑼 et 𝟓𝟒𝑿𝒆 Compare the stability of the uranium
nucleus ( 𝟗𝟐𝑼) to that of the xenon nucleus Xenon ( 𝟐𝟑𝟓
𝟐𝟑𝟓
𝟗𝟐𝑼)

Data: mn = 1.0086 u, mp = 1.0073 u, mU = 234.9942 u and mXe = 139.9252 u

Exercise 5
The mass of the helium nucleus 𝟒𝟐𝑯𝒆 is 4.0026 u. Knowing that the masses of the proton and
neutron are: mn = 1.0086 u; mp = 1.0073 u.
1. Calculate the mass defect and the binding energy (in J and MeV) of the Helium nucleus
𝟒
𝟐𝑯𝒆
2. Calculate, in kJ/mol, the energy released during the formation of a mole of 𝟒𝟐𝑯𝒆
1. Compare this value to the energy of a chemical reaction.
Note: the energy of a chemical reaction is of the order of a few tens of kJ/mol.
Exercise 6
The ZXb+ ion in its 3rd excited state, it emits a photon with an energy equal to 204 eV upon its
return to the ground state.
1- Calculate Z and b.
2- Calculate the emitted wavelength λZ.
3- For the same transition, calculate the wavelength λH and the energy of the photon
emitted by the hydrogen atom. Locate λH in the spectral domain.
We give: : c = 3.108 m/s ; h = 6,62.10-34 J.s ; RH = 1,09677.107 m-1 ; 1 eV = 1,6.10-19 J

Exercise 7
Calculate the atomic number Z and the charge b in the following cases:
a- Light radiation of wavelength λ = 5.68 nm causing the ionization of a hydrogenoid ion
ZX
b+
initially in its ground state.
b- A hydrogenoid ion ZXb+ in its 1st excited state, its radius is rn = 0.705Å.
c- When the hydrogenoid ion ZXb+ returns from the 3rd excited state to the ground state, it
emits radiation with a frequency υ = 1.23.1016 s-1.

We give: c = 3.108 m/s ; a0 = 0,529 Å ; RH = 1,09677.107 m-1

Exercise 8
A hydrogen atom initially in the ground state absorbs an amount of energy of 10.2 eV.
1. At what level is the electron?
2. The electron of a hydrogen atom initially at the n=3 level emits radiation with a wavelength
of 1027 Å. At what level is the electron found?

Exercise 9

A. If the electron of the hydrogen atom is excited at the level n=5, how many different lines can
they emit upon returning to the ground state.
- Calculate in each case the frequency and wavelength of the emitted photon.

B. If a hydrogen atom in its ground state absorbs a photon of wavelength λ1 then emits a photon
of wavelength λ2, on what level is the electron located after this emission? λ1 = 97.28 nm and
λ2 = 1879 nm.

Exercise 10

We consider the monoionized helium atom 24He+ in its ground state, the radius of the orbit is
then 0.27A°.
a. Determine the value of the force of attraction exerted by the nucleus on the electron
b. What is the speed of the electron in this orbit
c. Determine the total energy of the electron. Deduce the second ionization energy of the
helium atom.
Exercise 11

- Calculate the speed of the electron in the second Bohr orbit of the hydrogen atom
- What is the value of the wavelength associated with this electron
- Calculate the uncertainty in the position of this electron in the case where the speed is
measured by a relative uncertainty of 1/100. Comment on the result obtained.

Exercise 12

The first ionization energy of the helium atom is 24.6 eV.

1. What is the energy of the ground level?

2. An Helium atom is in an excited state. One of its electrons is then at an energy level equal
to (-21.4 eV.= What is the wavelength of the radiation emitted when this electron falls back to
the ground level

Exercise 13

a. Calculate the frequency of the radiation which accompanies the transition of the electron of
a hydrogen atom from the excited state n = 6 to the state n = 2. At what series of the emission
spectrum of the atom this radiation belongs to? Has the atom then returned to its ground state?

b. Calculate the wave number and the wavelength of the radiation causing the ionization of
hydrogen initially in the ground state, deduce the ionization energy of hydrogen and express it
in eV.

Exercise 14

1. The fundamental state hydrogen atom absorbs light of wavelength λ1=92.80 nm.

- What is the reached “level n” by the electron?

2. When returning the electron to the ground state, several lines are observed:

- Which line produces a photon of minimal energy? calculate Emin

- Which line produces the highest frequency? Calculate νmax

- Which line gives the smallest wavelength? Calculate λmin
