Prenons les quatre exemples suivants: - He runs all the time.
- He's running at the moment.
- He has run a lot, so he is tired.
- He has been running for two hours.

aspects. Il existe 8 combinaisons, 4 pour chaque temps:

PERFORMANCE GROUP
40
TEMPS ASPECT EXEMPLE
PRÉSENT SIMPLE Bears sleep in winter.
PRÉSENT PROGRESSIF She is writing a report.
PRÉSENT PERFECTIF She has phoned him many
times.
PRÉSENT PROG.-PERFECTIF She has been thinking about
me.
PASSÉ SIMPLE He received a letter
yesterday.
PASSÉ PROGRESSIF She was watching TV.
PASSÉ PERFECTIF She had been there for one
hour.
PASSÉ PERF.-PROGRESSIF She had been waiting all day.

auxiliaires modaux (can, may, etc.).
différentes: /s/ : He works all the time.
/Iz/ : The Sun also rises.
/z/ : He sings like a bird.
Aux formes négative et interrogative, on a recours à l'auxiliaire DO (DOES) comme
supportdu temps, sauf pour les auxiliaires modaux, BE et HAVE auxiliaire. - Does he realize
how rich he is?
- I don't think so (I do not think so).

VALEURS ET EMPLOIS
1) Généralité, habitude ou vérité scientifique.
- Water boils at 100°c. L'eau bout à 100° c.
- He usually gets up at 6. En général, il se lève à 6 heures.

2) Futur prévisible.
The train leaves at 4.

- He is watching television.
- He is writing a book.

She works in a bank but today she is not working.

He is going to London
next month.

fréquence comme never, always, etc.
She's always making mistakes!

You're staying with me! You're not going anywhere!

believe, belong, cost, know, matter, mean, own...

- I can see the bird (see = voir)
- I'm seeing the boss tomorrow (see = rencontrer)
- I have a car (have = avoir, posséder)
- She's having a bath (have = prendre)
- He is 32 years old / He is rich (be = un état)
- He is being a real nuisance (be = attitude temporaire)

worked a lot.
/d/ : They have cleared the room.
/Id/: I have hated him ever since I met him.

PERFORMANCE GROUP
42

- I have lived here since 1991. J’habite ici depuis 1991

exprime cette durée (for a year, for 3 months, for ages, for a long time, ...).

- I have lived here for a month.

- I have lived here since I was a child. (passé révolu = prétérit)

- I have lived here since a) I have been a doctor.

The Prime Minister has not been to Glasgow since taking office in 1999 (= since hetook office ...)

Remarque : il est possible de reformuler une phrase avec for par une phrase du type It is + durée +
point de départ. since +

- I have not met (PP) him for 6 years. = It is 6 years since I met (prétérit) him.
- I have owned this house for 10 years. = It is 10 years since I bought this house (sinceI became
the owner of this house).
b) Passé dit "d'expérience" :
- Have you ever been to England? Etes-vous déjà allé en Angleterre
? - No, I've never been there. Non, jamais.

On trouve souvent l'association du perfectif à des adverbes comme already, so far, up to now,
till (until) now, hitherto (jusqu'à présent), before, (not) yet, (n)ever.

c) Passé immédiat : just. L'action vient de se produire. I've just seen him.

l'action a déjà eu lieu.
PERFORMANCE GROUP
43
- I have visited the museum today.

2) Rapport de cause à effet

3) Locutions régissant l'emploi du perfectif

It's the first, second, umpteenth time (that) I have seen him = c'est la première,deuxième, énième
fois que je le vois.

I.4. LE PRÉSENT PROGRESSIF-PERFECTIF

STRUCTURE : Auxiliaire HAVE (présent) + BEEN + BV-ing.

I've been looking for you.

I've been looking for you for two hours.

- It has been raining. Il a plu (la route est mouillée).
- I've been looking for you. Je te cherchais (je t'ai trouvé). II.1. LE PASSÉ SIMPLE (prétérit
simple)

STRUCTURE : BV + -ed ou verbe irrégulier (Cf. annexe

1) - I walked all day.
- You came too late.

- She saw Peter yesterday, and she told him about her wedding, how happy she was. - I
wrote him a letter two days AGO.

PERFORMANCE GROUP
44
dans le passé : USED TO + BV.
He used to smoke.

Aux formes interrogative et négative on dira : Did he use to smoke? No, he didn't use tosmoke.

II.2. LE PRÉTÉRIT PROGRESSIF

STRUCTURE : BE (prétérit) + BV-ing.

He was looking for his wallet when the light went out. Il était en train de chercher sonportefeuille
lorsque la lumière s'est éteinte.

VALEURS ET EMPLOIS : Cf.

II.3. LE PASSÉ PERFECTIF (PLU-PERFECT)

STRUCTURE : Auxiliaire HAVE (passé) + PP.
VALEURS ET EMPLOIS : Cf. I.3. avec décalage dans le passé.
- I had lived there for five months (when they decided to pull down the building).

- I had worked there since *1978

* I had been a child.(*)
* I had been a doctor.(**)

- It is/was (high) time he started to work.

- I wish he were here.
- I wish he didn't disturb me all the time. - He wishes
he were not so old. Il regrette d'être aussi vieux.

Regret passé :
- I wish he had not come.
- I wish he had understood.

I regret you are here. = I wish you were not here.

Onpeut
retrouver le sens de I regret you are here grâce à un énoncé du type I wish you were elsewhere. Ici on
utilise le contraire de l'adverbe here.

Wish exprimera un souhait dans une phrase comme I wish you would tell me the truth, ce qui

If I were rich, I would buy a yacht . Si j'étais riche, j'achèterais un
yacht.
If he had told me the truth, I wouldn't have punished him.
puni.
Expression de la préférence avec WOULD/HAD ('D) RATHER/SOONER

- I'd rather he came. Je préfèrerais qu'il vienne.

- I'd rather he didn't say anything. Je préfèrerais qu'il ne dise rien.
- I'd rather he had told me the truth. J'aurais préféré qu'il me dise la vérité.
- I'd rather he hadn't stayed on his own.

I'd as soon he came tomorrow. J'aimerais autant qu'il vienne demain.

III.1.

(BE,HAVE ou DO). - I like peas. J'aime les petits pois.
- I don't.

Autres exemples :
- You're 25 years old but she's not, so she's not going with you to that disco.
- Does everybody have a car? - I don't.

* Formes elliptiques à l'impératif (chapitre 3)

* Me neither/Me too, etc. (chapitre 14)

* Structures causatives elliptiques (You'll phone him or I'll make you.) (chapitre 6)

III.2.

III.2.a. A la forme affirmative pour les auxiliaires BE et HAVE, la marque de l'insistance

n'estvraiment sensible qu'à l'oral où le locuteur accentue fortement l'auxiliaire. A l'écrit, on pourra
soit souligner l'auxiliaire soit l'écrire en italiques. But you are rich!

III.2.b.
did see him. Je l'ai vraiment vu.
On notera aussi la structure suivante :
She came here to drink, and drink she did.

1958 ″nineteen fifty-eight″
2012 ″two thousand and twelve″

Packaging : the insane waste of making things to be thrown

away
To get a chocolate out of a box requires a considerable amount of unpacking:
the box has to be taken out of the paper bag in which it arrived; the cellophane
wrapper, a thin colourless plastic material used to keep products clean and dry, has
to be torn off, the lid opened and the paper removed; the chocolate itself then has to
be unwrapped from its own piece of paper. But this insane amount of wrapping is not
confined to luxuries. It is now becoming increasingly difficult to buy anything that is
not done up in cellophane, polythene, or paper.
The package itself is of no interest to the shopper, who usually throws it away
immediately. Useless wrapping amounts for much of the refuse put out by the
average London household each week. So why is it done? Some of it, like the
cellophane on meat, is necessary, but most of the rest is simply competitive selling.
This is absurd.
Packaging is using up scarce energy and resources and messing up the
environment. Little research is being carried out on the costs of alternative types of
packaging. Just how possible isit, for instance, for local authorities to salvage paper,
pulp it, and recycle it as egg-boxes? Would it be cheaper to plant another forest?
Paper is the material most used for packaging – 20 million paper bags are apparently
used in Great Britain each day – but very little is salvaged.
A machine has been developed that pulps paper then processes it into
packaging, e.g. egg-boxes and cartons. This could be easily adapted for local
authority use. It would mean that people would have to separatetheir refuse into
paper and non- paper, with a different dustbin for each. Paper is, in fact, probably the
material that can be most easily recycled; and now, with massive increases in paper
prices, the time has come at which collection by local authorities could be profitable.
Recycling of this kind is already happening with milk bottles, which are
returned to the dairies, washed out, and refilled. But both glass and paper are being
threatened by the growing use of plast ic. More and more dairies are experimenting
with plastic bottles, and it has been estimated that if all the milk bottles necessary
were made of plastic then British dairies would be producing the equivalent of
enough plastic tubing to encircle the earth every five or six days!
The trouble with plastic is that it does not rot. Some environmentalists argue
that the only solution tothe problem of ever growing mounds of plastic containers is
to do away with plastic altogether in the shops, a suggestion unacceptable to many
manufacturers who say there is no alternative to their handy plastic packs.
It is evident that more research is needed into the recovery and re-use of
various materials and into the cost of collecting and recycling containers as opposed
to producing new ones. Unnecessary packaging, intended to be used just once, and
making things look better so more people will buy them, is clearly becoming

PERFORMANCE GROUP
56
increasingly absurd. But it is not so much a question of doing away with packaging
as using it sensibly. What is needed now is a more sophisticated approach to using
scarce resources for what is, after all, a relatively unimportant function. (From an
article in Ford Times)

Passage 1

You cannot be very intelligent if you do not know how smart you are until you have been told your IQ
rate. It is probably unwise to take an IQ test because if you do then you risk feeling either superior or
disappointed when you get the result, and neither of these sentiments is beneficial.
What difference would it make to your life anyway, if you were to find out that you have the
IQ of a genius or well below average? These considerations did not stop almost half a million
Europeans from taking part in an internet IQ test. In the test, men scored 110 while women
scored 105; lefthanded people scored much higher than right-handed people; and people
with brown eyes scored best while people with red hair scored the least.

For 20 consecutive years the pass rate in the national advanced-level exams has increased.
The exam questions have not become easier but the students find it easier to obtain top
grades now that marks are awarded for course and project work and only 20% of the marks
are reserved for the final exams. Last year 130,000 girls obtained two A grades whereas 20
years ago only 34,000 obtained these marks. Before 1987, grades were norm-rated against
previous years, with only the top 10% of candidates being awarded an A grade. Since that
date no limit to the number of A grades has been set and anyone who scores over 60%

Passage 4
Many barristers hold that the compensation culture is in fact hype and imagined. They rely
on the fact that the number of compensation cases going through the courts is falling. Others
believe that they are wrong because the figure excludes the large increase in the numbers of
claims brought to industrial tribunals and because they ignore the widespread fear of
compensation. A fear of being sued, it is argued, has changed day-to-day life and this is
what is meant by the compensation culture. These changes include the cancellation of
school outings and the banning of ball games in the park. Bizarre judgments have also
added to a sense of compensation culture; an example of such a judgment is the successful
case of the prisoner who sued the prison service after he fell from a roof when trying to
escape.

The amount of liquid assets held by non-financial corporations has almost doubled over the
past five years. The increase in assets relative to debt is in sharp contrast to the late 1990s,
when companies raised large amounts of debt to fund capital investments and acquisitions.
The reluctance of companies today to spend, despite the fact that they hold large amounts of
cash, shows that they are unwilling to make the mistake again of over investment leading to
production greater than demand. Telecommunications and high-technology companies were
among the big spenders then and they suffered its effects more than most; they are now the

EXERCICE 11 :READING COMPREHENSION

Packaging : the insane waste of making things to be thrown away

To get a chocolate out of a box requires a considerable amount of unpacking: the
box has to be taken out of the paper bag in which it arrived; the cellophane
wrapper, a thin colourlessplastic material used to keep products clean and dry, has
to be torn off, the lid opened and the paper removed; the chocolate itself then has to
be unwrapped from its own piece of [Link] this insane amount of wrapping is
not confined to luxuries. It is now becomingincreasingly difficult to buy anything that

PERFORMANCE GROUP
82
is not done up in cellophane, polythene, or paper. The package itself is of no interest
to the shopper, who usually throws it away [Link] wrapping amounts
for much of the refuse put out by the average London householdeach week. So
why is it done? Some of it, like the cellophane on meat, is necessary, but mostof
the rest is simply competitive selling. This is absurd. Packaging is using up scarce
energy and resources and messing up the environment.
Little research is being carried out on the costs of alternative types of packaging.
Just how possible is it, for instance, for local authorities to salvage paper, pulp it,
and recycle it as egg-boxes? Would it be cheaper to plant another forest? Paper is
the material most used for packaging – 20 million paper bags are apparently used in
Great Britain each day – but very little is salvaged.
A machine has been developed that pulps paper then processes it into packaging,
e.g. egg- boxes and cartons. This could be easily adapted for local authority use.
It would mean that people would have to separate their refuse into paper and
non- paper, with a different dustbin for each. Paper is, in fact, probably the
material that can be most easily recycled; and now, with massive increases in
paper prices, the time has come at which collection by local authorities could be
profitable.
Recycling of this kind is already happening with milk bottles, which are returned to
the dairies, washed out, and refilled. But both glass and paper are being threatened
by the growinguse of plastic. More and more dairies are experimenting with plastic
bottles, and it has been estimated that if all the milk bottles necessary were made
of plastic then British dairies wouldbe producing the equivalent of enough plastic
tubing to encircle the earth every five or six days!
The trouble with plastic is that it does not rot. Some environmentalists argue that
the only solution to the problem of ever growing mounds of plastic containers is
to do away with plastic altogether in the shops, a suggestion unacceptable to
many manufacturers who say there is no alternative to their handy plastic packs.
It is evident that more research is needed into the recovery and re-use of various materials
and into the cost of collecting and recycling containers as opposed to
producing new ones. Unnecessary packaging, intended to be used just once, and
making things look better so morepeople will buy them, is clearly becoming
increasingly absurd. But it is not so much a question of doing away with packaging
as using it sensibly. What is needed now is a more sophisticated approach to using
scarce resources for what is, after all, a relatively unimportantfunction.

9. Réponse A.

12. Réponse A.
14. Réponse B.
