I- The infinitive and gerund.
1- The infinitive.
A- Infinitive with ‘’to+verb’’
Ex : It is important to travel during holidays.
This situation looks difficult to deal with.
decide, expect, hope, plan, prepare, promise, refuse, would like…etc.
Ex : I want to speak to the manager.
She's learning to play the piano.
He needs to buy some clothes .
Après un verbes pour justifier une raison.
Ex : I study my lessons to pass my exam.
We work to get much money.
Après too et enough :
Ex : They were old enough to vote but not to drink.
He reads too many books to have information about religions.
Après les pronoms interrogatifs : who, whom, what, where, when, how (à l’exception
Ex : I don’t know what to do.
We couldn’t guess how to unlock the doors
B- Bare infinitive : l’infinitif sans ‘’to’’
On peut également former l’infinitif sans ajouter '’to’’. Mais cela ne se fait qu’à l’aide de
certains indices textuels. L’infinitif se forme donc sans ‘’to’’,
Apres les verbes de modalités : can, may, might, could, should, would, will, shall,
should, must.
Ex : We can win this match.
I might be late tonight.
Ex : I hear the car arrive on the other side.
John watches his father play football.
Après les verbes : let, make, do.
Ex : He let his father do all the work alone.
Après le pronom interrogatif why
Ex :Why wear a raincoat when it’s sunny outside?
l’expression to be worth
Ex : I enjoy eating yams.
I like travelling by bus.
Après une préposition : about, of, in, with, without, on, at…
Ex : I think about going back to school.
She is interested in learning English.
Après le verbe be used to, s’il est suivi d’un verbe d’action .
Ex : She is used to travelling around the World.
Ex : She is used to hear noise at night.
Ex : Eating fruits is important for healthy diet.
