How to Form Basic Questions in French
In French, there are 3 main ways to ask questions.
From easiest to more formal:
1. Intonation (just raise your voice)
2. Est-ce que questions
3. Inversion (formal style)
1. Intonation Questions (Most Common in Speaking)
You keep the normal sentence order and raise your voice at the end.
Structure
Subject + verb + ? ↑
Examples
Statement
Tu parles français.
→ You speak French.
Question
Tu parles français ?
→ Do you speak French?
More examples:
« Vous habitez ici ? »
→ Do you live here?
« Elle travaille aujourd’hui ? »
→ Is she working today?
« Ils arrivent demain ? »
→ Are they arriving tomorrow?
Why This Is Easy
No grammar changes.
You only change your tone.
This is the most natural way in everyday French conversation.
2. Questions with “Est-ce que”
This is very common and very clear for learners.
Structure
Est-ce que + subject + verb + ... ?
Examples
Simple sentence
Tu aimes le café.
Question
Est-ce que tu aimes le café ?
→ Do you like coffee?

Important Rule
Before a vowel or silent h:
est-ce qu’

The “-t-” Rule
French adds -t- between vowels for pronunciation.
