Le Passé Composé
To form the passé composé of verbs using avoir, conjugate avoir in the present
tense (j'ai, tu as, il a, nous avons, vous avez, ils ont) and add the past participle
of the verb expressing the action. Put the words together this way: subject +
helping verb (usually avoir) + past participle.
If the infinitive ends in -er, the participle ends in é
Example: aimer (infinitif) – aimé (participe passé)
If the infinitive ends in -ir, the participle ends in i
Example:finir (infinitif) – fini (participe passé)

Irregular verbs that are contained within a larger verb are used as the basis of the
past participle:
mettre (put) and past participle = mis (put); permettre (permit) and past participle =
permis (permitted)
ouvrir (open) and past participle = ouvert (oened); couvrir (cover) and past
participle = couvert (covered)
There are few “…re” ending verbs.
