February 1, 2025 began year 2 of our current, and last, 5-year grant cycle with NHGRI. Several months ago, we were notified by the NIH’s NHGRI that funding will come from the Alliance of Genome Resources grant rather than the individual Model Organism Databases (MODs). At that time, we will not be able to sustain the FlyBase.org web site. Instead, sometime before February 1, 2029, our users will rely on the Alliance web site ( https://www.alliancegenome.org/ ) to access FlyBase information. This announcement is not unexpected as it has been the NHGRI long term vision to have a common platform (web site and curation) for the MODs. We are currently formulating a comprehensive plan to transition as much of FlyBase as possible into the Alliance. A few datasets that aren’t transferred to the Alliance will be archived and remain accessible.
