CRITICAL SPEED This is the operating speed which is equal to the natural harmonic frequency of the pump. Do not operate this pump within a range of 90% to 110% of the critical speed. Operation of the Pump above 110% of the critical speed will not damage the pump providing, however, that the maximum speed is not exceeded. THE CRITICAL SPEED IS STAMPED ON THE PUMP NAME PLATE. 2, MINIMUM CONTINUOUS FLOW The minimum flow allowed for continuous operation of your pump is listed on the Data Sheet at the front of this manual. Operation of your pump below the listed minimum continuous flow for extended periods will reduce the service life of the shaft and bearings. WARNING DO NOT START a high horsepower pump (over 250 hp) against a closed discharge valve. 3. MAXIMUM CONTINUOUS FLOW The maximum continuous flow recommended for your pump is 100% of capacity at peak efficiency flow as listed on the Data Sheet at the front of this manual. Operation of your pump at a point beyond the peak efficiency is possible, but you should check with the factory or your local representative to determine that the operating point you select will not cause damage to your pump from cavitation resulting from operation on the break of the pump curve. 4, MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE 200° F. 5. OPERATING SPEED Do not attempt to increase (or decrease) the operating speed of the pump by changing the driver without consulting the factory or your local representative. 6 VIBRATION Refer to the acceptable field vibrations chart in Section IX. COPYRIGHT 2010 - WEIR MINERALS NA~ HAZLETON 2 WEIR MINERALS NORTH AMERICA - HAZLETON IS A REGISTERED TRADEMARK OF WEIR MINERALS AUSTRALIA, LTD 42 43 INITIAL START-UP 1 Make sure that all the installation requirements listed in Section III have been met. Rotate the pump shaft by hand to ensure that it tums freely. ‘The water level must be above the casing for start-up. To minimize the starting load on the driver, it is recommended that the discharge valve be partially open so that a high flow condition is not initially permitted, Check that the rotation of the driver matches that of the pump. Start the driver and slowly bring the pump up to speed. SLOWLY open the discharge valve until the design operating pressure is reached. Perform the following operating checks: a) Check the pump and the piping to assure there are no leaks. b) Check and record the discharge pressure gauge readings for future reference. c) Check and record the voltage and amperage per phase and KW, if there is an indicating wattmeter available. Check each bearing during the first hour of operation to ensure there is no overheating. It is advisable to monitor the temperature at the surface of the bearing housing. Although the bearings are designed for operation at temperatures up to 180° F.., the temperature at the surface of the bearing housing should not exceed 160° F ROUTINE START-UP Follow steps 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8 in Section 4.2. COPYRIGHT 2010 - WEIR MINERALS NA ~ HAZLETON B WEIR MINERALS NORTH AMERICA — HAZLETON IS A REGISTERED TRADEMARK OF WEIR MINERALS AUSTRALIA, LTD 44 45 46 OPERATING CHECKS 1. Check the pump and piping to ensure there are no leaks, 2. Check and record the discharge pressure gauge readings for future reference. 3. Check and record the voltage and amperage per phase and KW, if an indicating wattmeter is available. 4. Check for excessive vibration. 5. Monitor the bearing temperature. ‘The bearing housing outside skin should not exceed 160° F. SHUTDOWN 4. On pumps without a check valve in the discharge lines, itis recommended that the discharge valve must be closed upon shutdown to prevent reverse rotation at the pump’s critical speed. CAUTION DO NOT RESTART THE PUMP WHILE IT IS ROTATING BACKWARDS. 2. Flush, if possible, any slurry from the discharge line prior to shutdown. 3, The Hydraulic Institute recommends that a check valve be placed in the pump discharge line. On units with a check valve, the valve will prevent backflow of the water column, OPERATING CAUTIONS 1. DO NOT ALLOW the pump to operate continuously at less than the recommended minimum continuous flow as listed on the Data Sheet at the front of this manual. WARNING UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD THE PUMP BE ALLOWED TO OPERATE UNDER ZERO (0) FLOW (SHUTOFF) CONDITIONS. MAXIMUM SHAFT DEFLECTION AND EXCESSIVE HEAT BUILDUP OCCUR AT SHUTOFF OPERATION AND COULD RESULT IN ‘SHAFT OR BEARING FAILURE. 2. In cold weather the fluid in the pump and piping must be kept from freezing. COPYRIGHT 2010 - WEIR MINERALS NA ~ HAZLETON 4 WEIR MINERALS NORTH AMERICA ~ HAZLETON IS A REGISTERED TRADEMARK OF WEIR MINERALS AUSTRALIA, LTD Avoid repeated starts that may overheat the driver. Sufficient time between starts. must be allowed to permit the heat to dissipate from the windings. Excessive vibration can be caused by many factors. Determine and eliminate the cause of excessive vibration or serious damage to the pump can occur. WARNING DO NOT OPERATE YOUR TYPE “VNCB” PUMP WITHOUT FACTORY AUTHORIZED GUARDS IN PLACE. COPYRIGHT 2010 - WEIR MINERALS NA — HAZLETON 15 WEIR MINERALS NORTH AMERICA — HAZLETON IS A REGISTERED TRADEMARK OF WEIR MINERALS AUSTRALIA, LTD SECTION V - MAINTENANCE. 5.1 GENERAL ‘As operating conditions can vary so widely between pump installations, it is nearly impossible to recommend a single schedule of preventative maintenance. However, in order to determine when the pump will require parts change-out to prevent breakdown, a regular inspection period should be instituted during which an inspection of the pump is made and various conditions are recorded and the preventative maintenance procedures required to maintain the pump are performed. We also recommend that the hours of operation be recorded. 5.2 PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE 4. Impeller Adjustment - After pump startup the clearance between the impeller (2) and the casing ring (6) should be checked on a weekly basis until a wear history can be determined. The clearance should be adjusted to 0.030" when the wear causes the clearance to reach 0.090". Refer to Section 5.3 for the adjustment procedure. 2. Lubrication - The bearings on the type "VNCB" pump are grease lubricated, Refer to the lubrication instructions listed in Section 5.4 for the interval between greasing for the bearings on your pump. Refer to the Parts List for the type bearings used on your pump. 5.3 IMPELLER ADJUSTMENT Your type “VNCB" pump is designed with an adjustment feature on the bearing housing that is used to maintain the impeller (2) to casing ring (6) clearance. The recommended impeller (2) to casing ring (6) clearance is 0.030", and the clearance should be readjusted when the gap reaches 0,090". As the nature of the liquid/solid combination being pumped will determine the time period required for the clearance to be wom away to 0.090", itis necessary to initially do the adjustment weekly to determine a wear history. NOTE Failure to periodically adjust the impeller (2) clearance will result in rapid wear of the wearing parts and a loss of efficiency. COPYRIGHT 2010 - WEIR MINERALS NA~ HAZLETON, 16 WEIR MINERALS NORTH AMERICA ~ HAZLETON IS A REGISTERED TRADEMARK OF WEIR MINERALS AUSTRALIA, LTD TO ADJUST THE CLEARANCE TO 0.030" FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS LISTED BELOW: 54 1 2. 10. STOP the pump and tag out the driver. Loosen the upper adjusting nuts on the three adjusting studs. Refer to the parts list, in Section X. Tur the three lower adjusting nuts clockwise on the adjusting studs, this will lower the shaft unti the impeller contacts the casing ring (6) and the shaft cannot be rotated by hand. ‘Turn each lower adjusting nut counterclockwise by hand until it makes contact with the thrust bearing housing, Tur each lower adjusting nut counterclockwise, one flat at a time to slightly raise the shaft assembly until the pump can again be rotated by hand. ‘Once the pump can be freely rotated, turn each lower adjusting nut counterclockwise an additional 1-1/2 flats to set the recommended 0.030" clearance. Tighten the upper adjusting nuts to secure the rotating assembly in this position. Slide the quad ring (39) down against the bearing frame (22). Ensure the shaft (20) can be rotated by hand before starting the pump. When the pump is started after adjusting the clearance, listen and feel the pump support for evidence of noise or vibration. If noise or vibration is present, stop the pump promptly and increase the clearance by one (1) additional flat on the lower adjusting nuts. Tighten down the upper nuts and check for contact by rotating the shaft (20) by hand, LUBRICATION COPYRIGHT 2010 - WEIR MINERALS NA~ HAZLETON 7 WEIR MINERALS NORTH AMERICA ~ HAZLETON IS A REGISTERED TRADEMARK OF WEIR MINERALS AUSTRALIA, LTD 1, Factory Lubrication - The ball bearings in your pump have been packed with grease at the factory and do not require additional lubrication prior to startup unless the pump has been in long term storage. 2. APPROVED GREASES - DO NOT MIX GREASES. Failure to comply may result in voiding the pump's warranty. EXXON - RONEX MP (RECOMMENDED GREASE) Refer to the Pump Data Sheet for the pump operating speed and the Parts List for the bearing identification. RELUBRICATION FREQUENCY FOR HOURS OF OPERATION GREASE BEARING | QUANTITY NUMBER (oz) HOURS @ 900 RPM HOURS @ 1200 RPM HOURS @ 4800 RPM 7900 3.50 Radial 5800 3800 NOTE ‘These intervals should be reduced by 1/2 when severe conditions of dirt and moisture exist, but do not add more than the recommended quantity. NOTE Pumps subject to constant splashing or spillage should be relubricated weekly. 5.5 DRIVES/COUPLINGS Refer to Section IX - Drives in this manual for the manufacturer's maintenance instructions. Sound is produced by liquid flowing within the pump casing, the bearings within the pumping unit, the couplings and unit drivers. Not all sound is objectionable. Sound which is objectionable is defined as noise. Sound may be transmitted in three (3) manners: Air-borne within the pump room Liquid-borne by the liquid being pumped ‘Structure-borne through the attached piping and support system Since sound is more readily transmitted through incompressible structures, structure-bome sounds are generally the most objectionable. Two of the most important factors in minimizing sound in a pump station are the selection of the pumping unit for the operating conditions and the installation of the pump itself. To ensure minimum sound levels, the pumps should be chosen for operation near the point of best efficiency. ‘The prevention of noise is greatly dependent upon the pump installation. Proper alignment of the pump and driver is essential, as well as the support of the discharge piping. The manner in which the pump is installed and the piping supported may contribute to objectionable harmonics. “A greater degree of noise prevention may be obtained when the pumping unit is supported free of the building structures by the use of vibration isolators and flexible piping conduit. Noise emanating from the motion of high velocity liquids within the piping system, particularly from partially opened valves, should not mistakenly be attributed to the pumping unit.
