Materiales
Materials
A glass cup.
A bottle filled with plain water. A pencil or pen.
Place the pencil inside the empty cup. What do you observe before and after placing the
pencil in the cup?
The pencil is clearly visible, both outside and inside the glass. Light passes through the
glass, which is filled with air and contains the pencil. The pencil looks the same outside
and inside the glass because the medium it is in is air, and the glass is transparent and
allows light to pass through without any problem. What will happen if you add water to
half the glass?
As you add water to the glass, the pencil changes shape and size. It looks like the pencil
is broken, but it is not.
WHY DO YOU THINK THIS HAPPENS? It is due to the refraction of light, which is
the change in the direction or path of light as it passes from one medium to another.
