CONJUNCTIONS
A conjunction is a word that "joins". A conjunction joins two parts of a sentence.
Ejemplo:
"The car stopped". "The driver got out. "
"The car stopped and the driver got out".
Function
Conjunctions have two basic functions:
- Coordinating conjunctions are used to join two parts of a sentence that are
grammatically equal.
gramaticalmente semejantes.
The two parts may be single words or clauses, for example:
Jack and Jill went up the hill.
The water was warm, but I didn't go swimming.
- Subordinating conjunctions are used to join a subordinate dependent clause to a main
clause.
I went swimming although it was cold.
Here are some example conjunctions:

Fíjate de nuevo en los siguientes ejemplos, que son los más empleados:
Conjunciones "and / but / or"
- AND
"We stayed at home and (we) watched television".
Nota: con el uso de la conjunción "and", no es necesario repetir el sujeto "we".
"My sister is married and (she) lives in London".
Nota: con el uso de la conjunción "and", no es necesario repetir el sujeto "she".
- BUT
"It´s a nice house, but it hasn´t got a garden".
"I bought a newspaper, but I didn´t read it".
- OR
"Do you want to go out or are you too tired ?"
Conjunciones "so / because"
- SO (the result of something - el resultado de algo)
"It was hot, so I opened the window" (hacía calor, por tanto, abrí la ventana).
"Joey does a lot of sport, so he´s very fit" (Joey hace mucho deporte, por tanto, está muy en
forma).
They don´t like travelling, so they haven´t been to many places. (no les gusta viajar, por tanto,
no han estado en muchos lugares).
- BECAUSE (porque ... - explicativo)
"Amy can´t come to the party because she´s going away". (Amy no puede venir a la fiesta
porque se marcha fuera).
"Lisa is hungry because she didn´t have breakfast" (Lisa tiene hambre porque no desayunó).
"Because it was hot, I opened the window" (porque hacía calor, abrí la ventana).
Conjunciones "before / after"
Veamos la traducción de las siguientes conjunciones:
before = antes de ...
after = después de
- BEFORE
“Everybody is nervous before exams” (… antes de los exámenes)
“Don´t forget to close the window before you go out” (no olvides cerrar la ventana antes de
salir)
- AFTER
I usually work four hours in the morning and another two hours after lunch. (normalmente
“We were tired after our visit to the museum” (estabamos cansados despues de visitar el
museo).
Important: “before” y “after” nunca pueden llevar detrás un infinitivo, sino que van seguidos
de un verbo acabado en “-ing”.
o “I always have breakfast before going to work” (antes de ir a trabajar)
o “Before eatingthe apple, wash it carefully” (antes de comer la manzana, lavala
bien)
o “After doing the shopping, we went home” (despues de hacer la compra,
fuimos a casa).
o “I started work after reading the newspaper” (despues de leer …)
Conjunciones "during / while"
during = durante
while = mientras
Ahora, vemos la diferencia de uso entre “during” y “while”. Fíjate:
“We didn´t speak during the meal” (no hablamos durante la comida).
“We didn´t speak while we were eating” (no hablamos mientras comíamos)
- DURING
“I went to sleep during the film” (me dormí durante la película)
“We didn´t speak during the meal” (no hablamos durante la comida).
“My grandfather was in France during the war” (durante la guerra)
“Amy fell asleep during the concert” (se durmió durante el concierto)
- WHILE
“I often go to sleep while I´m watching television” ( a menudo me duermo mientras veo tv)
“Would you like to sit down while you are waiting ?” (¿querrías sentarte mientras esperas?)
“Mark fell while he was running” (Mark se cayó mientras corría)
“Your mother gave us a cup of coffee while we were waiting for you” (tu madre nos dió un café
mientras te esperabamos)
Pero... con expresiones que indican un periodo de tiempo exacto (three days, two hours, a
year) se usa for y no during.
“We played tennis for two hours” ( no “during two hours)
“I lived in London for a year” ( no “during a year”)
“I stayed in Rome for five days” ( no “during five days”)
