++EL GERUNDIO Y EL INFINITIVO++
EL GERUNDIO
Es la forma verbal terminada en –ing que, aparte de usarse en los tiempos
continuos, tiene otras importantes aplicaciones en inglés:
USOS:
-Como complemento directo de los siguientes verbos:
LIKE, DISLIKE, MISS, LOVE, HATE, SUGGEST, ENJOY, DETEST CONSIDER,
PREFER, DENY.
I miss seeing her. (echo de menos verla)
-Detrás de las siguientes formas verbales:
CAN’ T STAND, DON’ T/DOESN’ T MIND , CAN’ T HELP, IT’ S NO
USE
-Detrás de todas las preposiciones: OF, TO, FROM, etc.
Lucy doesn’ t like his way of thinking ( A Lucy no le gusta su manera de pensar)
-Como sujeto de la oración cuando hablamos de acciones o hechos en general.
Smoking is bad for the health
-Detrás de BE/GET USED TO, ya que este TO es una preposicion:
I can’t get used to getting up early ( No me acostumbro a levantarme temprano)
Otros verbos que se construyen en gerundio son:
ADMIT, ADVISE, AVOID, CAN’ T IMAGINE, COMPLETE, DISCUSS, FINISH,
GIVE UP, IMAGINE, KEEP, MENTION, MIND, PRACTISE, RECOMMEND,
REGRET, REPORT, RESIST, RISK.
EL INFINITIVO
Es la forma que va precedida de TO:
USOS:
-Detrás de estos verbos:
WANT, HELP, REFUSE, DECIDE, PROMISE, PERSUADE, WISH, PLAN,
LEARN, AGREE, CHOOSE, APPEAR, SEEM, HOPE, EXPECT
They decided to take my advice ( decidieron seguir mi consejo)
-Detrás de adjetivos y adverbios.
This situation is not easy to understand
The car went too fast to see the traffic lights
-Con verbos que llevan complemento directo de persona, como:
TELL, INVITE, ADVISE, TEACH, WARN
I invited her to come home
Algunos verbos de percepción (HEAR, FEEL, SEE…) , MAKE y LET llevan
infinitivo sin TO:
I heard him say that
Let me see your pictures
Tampoco llevan infinitivo con TO los verbos modales, excepto HAVE TO,
OUGHT TO y NEED TO, asi como USED TO, que sí llevan incorporada esta
particula.
-Otros verbos que sí llevan INFINITIVO CON TO:
AFFORD, ARRANGE, ATTEMPT, BEG, DARE, DEMAND, DESERVE, FAIL,
HESITATE, INTEND, MANAGE, MEAN, OFFER, PREPARE, PRETEND,
THREATEN, WAIT, WISH
VERBOS SEGUIDOS DE GERUNDIO O INFINITIVO
Algunos verbos pueden ir con gerundio y con infinitivo y puede haber:
-poca variación en el significado. Algunos ejemplos son: BEGIN, HATE, LIKE,
LOVE, PREFER, START:
I love learning languages/ I love to learn languages
(Me encanta aprender idiomas)
You should start to have some fun / You should start having some fun (Deberías
empezar a pasartelo bien)
-variación en el significado. Algunos ejemplos son: FORGET, REGRET,,
REMEMBER, STOP, TRY.
Forget+infinitivo: olvidar hacer algo en el futuro
Forget+gerundio: olvidar algo que ha pasado
He always forgets to call me (Siempre se le olvida llamarme)
She’ ll never forget meeting him ( Jamas olvidará el dia que le conocio)
Remember+infinitivo: acordarse de hacer algo en el futuro
Remember+-ing : recordar un hecho pasado
Please remember to post the letter!(¿Acuerdate de enviar la carta!)
I remember posting the letter last week(Recuerdo haber enviado la carta la
semana pasada)
Regret+to se usa para anunciar algo que no tiene solucion
Regret+-ing se refiere a una accion pasada.
I regret to tell you that we can’ t do anything ( siento decirte que no podemos
hacer nada)
They regret going to the concert. It wasn’ t good. (lamentan haber ido al
concierto. No fue bueno)
Stop+ infinitivo: parar para hacer otra cosa
Stop+gerundio: dejar de hacer algo
He stopped to talk to me at school. ( Se paró a hablar conmigo en el instituto)
He stopped talking to me after we rowed ( Dejó de hablarme cuando nos
peleamos)
Try+infinitivo: intentar hacer algo ( y normalmente no conseguirlo)
Try+gerundio: probar algo
I tried to run, but I was too tired ( Intenté correr pero estaba demasiado
cansada)
I tried running in order to get fit. ( probé a correr para ponerme en forma)
