Today I want to talk about my grandmother, Blanca Cecilia. She is an old but strong woman,
carrying on her shoulders 80 years of good and bad times. Her expression is serious, but her eyes
retain a deep compassion. She loves animals and plants, especially her cat Luna. She wakes up at 4
o'clock and makes her coffee with sugar, then goes out to the garden and waters the plants.
After bathing and eating a light meal, she uses her skilled hands to knit or create a craft. She
always finds a trade in the morning. This year, for example, she is making baskets out of soda caps
that she sells to neighbors and friends. In the afternoon she walks her heavy legs to go to the
store, or church or wherever, and returns home to watch the news and be with Luna, until finally
the night comes and with it the well-deserved rest after 80 years, six children, a dozen
grandchildren and a life dedicated to work.
