1. Ejemplos:
I was trying to sleep when the telephone rang.
Estaba intentando dormir cuando sonó el teléfono.
The birds were singing.
Los pájaros estaban cantando / Los pájaros cantaban.

2. Forma.
En inglés el pasado continuo, al igual que en español y valenciano, se construye con el auxiliar
estar (to be) y el gerundio.

1.1. afirmativa:
I was living in Boston at that time. (En esa época estaba viviendo en Boston.)
You were talking to her. (Estabas hablando con ella.)
He was sleeping when we arrived. (Estaba durmiendo cuando llegamos.)
We were looking for you. (Te estábamos buscando.)
You were trying to tell me something. (Estabais intentando decirme algo.)
They were blocking the roads. (Estaban cortando las carreteras.)

1.2. interrogativa
Was I talking in my sleep? (¿Estaba hablando en sueños?)
Were you doing anything inportant? (¿Estabas haciendo algo importante?)
Was she trying to get in? (¿Estaba intentando entrar?)
Were we making too much noise? (¿Estábamos haciendo demasiado ruido?)
Were you waiting for me? (¿Me estabais esperando?)
Were they behaving aggressively? (¿Se estaban comportando de forma agresiva?)

1.3. negativa
I wasn't smoking. (No estaba fumando.)
You weren’t sleeping, were you? (No estabas durmiendo, ¿verdad?.)
It wasn't raining. (No estaba lloviendo.)
We weren't watching TV when you called. (No estábamos viendo la tele cuando llamaste.)
You weren't studying together. (No estabais estudiando juntos.)
They weren't stealing. (No estaban robando.)

Las respuestas breves de sí / no se hacen usando el pronombre y el auxiliar.

Were you having dinner? No, I wasn’t.
¿Estabas cenando? No.
Were the boys trying to get in? Yes, they were.
¿Los chicos estaban intentando entrar? Sí

Te recordamos la formación de gerundio:

3.1. Regla general: infinitivo + ING (rain - raining)

It was raining.
Estaba lloviendo.
3.2. Casos especiales:
 Si el infinitivo acaba en -e se quita la -e antes de añadir el ING:
smoke (fumar) - smoking (fumando) -

She was smoking too much in those days.

Estaba fumando demasiado en aquellos días.
 Si el infinitivo tiene una sílaba acentuada y acaba en consonante + vocal +
consonante, se duplica esta última consonante:
cut (cortar) - cutting (cortando), hit (golpear) - hitting (golpeando), swim (nadar) -
swimming (nadando)
He was swimming in the ocean when a shark attacked him.
Estaba nadando en el océano cuando le atacó un tiburón.
CUIDADO: Si el infinitivo acaba en -y se añade simplemente la -ing sin que ocurra
nada especial:
study (estudiar) - studying (estudiando)
He was studying in his bedroom.
Estaba estudiando en su cuarto.
 Si el infinito acaba en -ie (hay poquísimos) se quita la -ie y se cambia todo por -ying:
tie (atar) - tying (atando), die (morir)- dying (muriendo)

3. Usos:
El past continuous expresa una acción que duraba en el pasado. Normalmente corresponde a la
estructura española estar + gerundio:
What were you doing when I called you?
¿Qué estabas haciendo cuando te llamé.
Pero también puede corresponder al pretérito imperfecto del castellano o valenciano:
I was living in a hotel at that time.
En esa época vivía en un hotel.
Compara esta frase con el past simple:
I lived in Stockholm from 2001 to 2003.
Viví en Estocolmo de 2001 a 2003.

Por lo tanto, los usos del past continuous son muy parecidos al castellano o el valenciano:
 Para acciones que estaban ocurriendo durante una franja de tiempo en pasado.
I was working at home between 5.00 and 8.00 p.m.
Estuve trabajando en casa entre las 5 y las 8 de la tarde.
 También puede indicar una acción que se vio "interrumpida" por otra.
I was having a shower when the telephone rang.
Me estaba duchando cuando sonó el teléfono.
 Con la palabra while puede indicar dos acciones que estaba ocurriendo al mismo tiempo.
I was preparing dinner in the kitchen while my brother was trying to repair
our answering machine.
Yo estaba preparando la cena mientras mi hermano estaba intentando
arreglar nuestro contestador automático.
 Por su aspecto durativo se suele utilizar en descripciones:
The morning was really beautiful. The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and
everyone in the street was smiling and saying hello to each other.
La mañana era realmente preciosa. Brillaba el sol, los pájaros cantaban, y todo el
mundo por la calle sonreía y se saludaba.

Con el pasado continuo es frecuente usar expresiones que indican continuidad como all night
long (durante todo la noche), the whole day (todo el día), etc. o conectores como while
(mientras).

Ciudado: recuerda que hay algunos verbos que no se suelen poner nunca en pasado
continuo: believe (creer), like (gustar), want (querer), mean (significar, querer decir),
belong (pertenecer), understand (entender). Es bueno que los memorices.
I wasn’t understanding her /I didn’t understand her. No la entendí.

2. Estructura para hacer preguntas con auxiliares (was / were). (Esta estructura es inalterable y se ha de
seguir escrupulosamente).

 Recuerda también que la estructura anterior no se usa cuando se pregunta por el sujeto de
una oración. En este caso se pone sólo el pronombre interrogativo (who, what) sin alterar la
oración.
My father was cooking paella in the garden.
Mi padre estaba haciendo una paella en el jardín.
Who was cooking paella in the garden?
¿Quién estaba haciendo una paella en el jardín?
 Recuerda que las preguntas en inglés no empiezan con preposición. De haberla, aparece al
final (después del gerundio).
Who was she working for?
¿Para quién estaba trabajando?
Who were you living with at that time?
¿Con quién estabas viviendo en esa época?
