Argumento
Hoyos cuenta la historia de un muchacho llamado
Stanley Yelnats, que es acusado de robar unas
zapatillas del famoso jugador de béisbol Clyde
Livingston. A pesar de que no es culpable, el veredicto
del juez dicta que debe ser enviado a un correccional
juvenil llamado Campamento Lago Verde. Antiguamente
este campamento era un gran lago, en el cual empieza
su aventura, echándole la culpa de su mala suerte a su
tatarabuelo. Allí, Stanley se entera de que todos los días
hay que cavar un enorme hoyo y que tiene que
encontrar algo interesante por casualidad para conseguir
el día libre. También, conoce a un grupo de chicos, y de
ellos es Zero quien se convierte en su mejor amigo. Será
con él con quien descubra la verdad que esconde dicho
campamento de disciplina.
A causa de las burlas que su amigo recibe del señor
Peraski y del Vigilante, cuando este está aprendiendo a
leer y escribir, Zero echa a correr al desierto, prefiriendo
la muerte antes que seguir allí. Stanley a los pocos días,
va en su busca, ya que no puede perder a su mejor
amigo. A las horas de ir caminando encuentra a Zero
bajo una barca, que hace tiempo se hundió en el lago.
Los dos amigos tienen que conseguir llegar a la montaña
con forma de pulgar, porque en su familia corría la
historia de que su tatarabuelo encontró alguna forma de
mantenerse vivo en dicha montaña durante mucho

tiempo, después de que Kate "Besos" Barlow le robara
toda su fortuna.
Stanley lleva a su amigo en hombros durante el camino
a la montaña, a causa de las pocas fuerzas que tenía.
Allí encuentran un campo de cebollas y pequeños
charcos de agua, para poder sobrevivir. Gracias a eso
consiguen mantenerse con vida y deciden regresar al
campamento a por su tesoro. Durante todos estos
acontecimientos Stanley estuvo recogiendo pruebas que
demuestran todo lo que había sucedido en el pasado, la
fortuna de su familia. Stanley consigue demostrar que
Kate "Besos" Barlow (una inocente muchacha que se
acaba convirtiendo en una de las ladronas más temidas)
le robó la fortuna a su tatarabuelo.
Los dos amigos regresan al campamento a escondidas,
para poder escarbar en el hoyo donde saben que se
encuentra el botín. Pero, justo cuando desentierran el
tesoro son vistos por el Vigilante y sus dos compañeros,
[Link] y [Link]. No pueden salir del hoyo, porque
están rodeados de una especie de lagartos muy
venenosos. Dicho animal es reacio a la cebolla, por ello
no muerden a los dos jóvenes. Gracias a eso consiguen
salir y poder descubrir toda la verdad.
Durante todo el libro cuenta la maldición de la mala
suerte que perdura en la familia de Stanley durante
muchas generaciones. Consistía en que una bruja
egipcia maldice a su tatarabuelo con la mala suerte de él
y sus descendientes si no la sube a beber a al montaña.
Al Stanley subir a Zero a la montaña y darle de beber
acaba esa mala suerte, ya que Zero es el bisnieto de
dicha mujer. Toda la fortuna pertenece a Stanley y a su
familia.
La novela acaba con al salida de los dos jóvenes del
campamento, y el cierre de este ya que era "ilegal", solo
existía para encontrar un cofre que había escondido
Kate Barlow.

Personajes
Personajes principales

 Stanley Yelnats: Es el personaje principal de la

historia. Stanley es internado en el Campamento Lago
Verde por un delito que él no cometió sino que lo hizo
Zero. Gracias a Stanley, su familia rompe la maldición
hecha por "Madam Zeroni", quién provenía de la
familia de Zero.
 Zero: Compañero y mejor amigo de Stanley dentro del
Campamento Lago Verde. El protagonista fue quien le
ayudó a aprender a leer y escribir. Su nombre real era
Héctor Zeroni. Fue enviado al campamento por robar
un par de zapatillas de una tienda.
 Señor Sir: Es el encargado del Campamento del Lago
Verde.
 Señor Peraski: Es el monitor del grupo en que se
encuentra Stanley en el Campamento Lago Verde. Se
encargaba de vigilar que los chicos cavaran los hoyos
y de llevarles agua cada cierto tiempo. Al principio,
ayudaba a Stanley con lo que podía. Es apodado
"Mami" por los chicos
 Vigilante: Así llamaban a la cruel y desalmada
Directora del Campamento Lago Verde. Quién quiso
borrar toda información proveniente de Héctor Zeroni .
Luego cuando fueron a buscar a Stanley al
campamento lago verde, ella decía no saber que
habían borrado la información de Zero.
Personajes secundarios

 Tic: Compañero de Stanley, cuyo nombre verdadero

era Brian, que aparece cuando se va Zero del
campamento. Es enviado al campamento por robar un
coche.
 Rayos X: Compañero del Campamento Lago Verde.
Líder de los demás chicos del campamento. Lo
llamaban Rayos X porque estaba prácticamente ciego

 por eso su apodo. Su nombre real es Rex. Es enviado
al campamento por vender hierba seca, haciendo
creer a la gente que era marihuana.
 Calamar: Compañero del Campamento Lago Verde.
Su nombre real es Alan. Es enviado al campamento
por agredir a un policía cuando este le quiso quitar
una botella de cerveza.
 Imán: Compañero del Campamento Lago Verde. Su
nombre real es José. Es enviado al campamento por
intentar robar un perro de una tienda de animales.
 Zig- Zag: Compañero de Campamento Lago Verde.
Su nombre real es Ricky. Es enviado al campamento
tras manipular la alarma de incendios de su colegio.
 Sobaco: Compañero del Campamento Lago Verde.
Su nombre real es Theodore. Fue enviado al
campamento por agredir a dos chicos en una sala de
cine.
 Clyde Livingston: Jugador de béisbol, que ese año
era el jugador que más bases había robado. A
Livingston fue a quien le robaron unas zapatillas
deportivas, que se iban a subastar en una obra
benéfica. Supuestamente fue Stanley quien robó las
zapatillas y por lo que se le acusa pero en verdad no
fue él.
 Sra. Morengo: Abogada de Stanley Yelnats. Al final
consigue sacarlo de la campamento por motivos de
oscuros, el campamento era como un campo de
concentración donde explotaban a los chicos para
encontrar un supuesto tesoro. Exactamente el de
Kate Barlow.
 Linda Miller: Esposa de Charles Walker y exalumna
de Katherine Barlow.
 Charles Walker: Hijo del vecino rico del Lago Verde.
Le conocían como "Trucha" Walker porque le olían los
pies a pescado debido a un hongo que en el futuro
tuvo también Clyde Livingston.

 Sam: Cultivador de cebollas en el Campamento Lago
Verde hace 110 años de piel oscura, por besar a
Katherine Barlow, fue asesinado cuando intentaba
huir en el lago.
 Kate Barlow: Era una maestra del pueblo Lago
Verde. Ella tenía una relación mutua sentimental con
Sam pero como Sam es de piel oscura y ella blanca
mataron a Sam. Desde que mataron a Sam ella se
volvió una criminal muy buscada en el oeste. La
verdadera razón por la que tienen que cavar hoyos en
Lago Verde es encontrar el tesoro de esta mujer.
 Vomitona: Era un chico al que Stanley no llegó a
conocer. Pero según todos y como se muestra en la
película, piso una serpiente a propósito acabando en
el hospital. Fue enviado al campamento tras robar
joyas de un museo.
 Madame Zeroni:Era la tatarabuela de Zero. Hizo un
trato con el tatarabuelo de Stanley Yelnats cuarto, el
cual consistía en darle un cerdo para que se pudiese
casar con una chica. El tatarabuelo no cumplió su
parte del trato y fue maldecido junto con todos sus
sucesores por Madame Zeroni

Estructura
Esta novela presenta una estructura, que está dividida
en tres partes:

La primera parte se llama Campamento Lago Verde, en

la cual nos muestra el esfuerzo que tiene que hacer para
poderse adaptar a las costumbres que imponen los
monitores y a los compañeros. El protagonista (Stanley)
se da cuenta de todas las atrocidades que se comenten
y que al mismo tiempo todo ese lugar esconde un
secreto.

 La segunda parte tiene como título, El último hoyo, en
ella es donde se podría decir que comienza realmente
toda la aventura de la historia. Es cuando Zero huye del
campamento y es seguido por Stanley. Los dos juntos
deciden subir a la montaña con forma de pulgar, en
donde consiguen sobrevivir. Al cabo de los días deciden
volver al campamento para descubrir toda la verdad.
Por último nos encontramos con la parte final,
Rellenando Hoyos, nos muestra la situación de después
de la salida de Stanley y Zero, donde se encuentran las
dos familias juntas y se graba un anuncio junto con el
famosísimo jugador de béisbol: Clyde Livingston.

Structure
This novel presents a structure, which is divided into
three parts:

The first part is called Green Lake Camp, in which he

shows us the effort he has to make to be able to
adapt to the customs imposed by the monitors and
the companions. The protagonist (Stanley) realizes
all the atrocities that are committed and that at the
same time this whole place hides a secret.
The second part is titled, The last hole, it is where it
could be said that the entire adventure of history
really begins. It is when Zero flees the camp and is
followed by Stanley. The two together decide to

climb the thumb-shaped mountain, where they
manage to survive. At the end of the days they
decide to return to the camp to discover the whole
truth.
Finally we find the final part, Filling Holes, it shows
us the situation after the departure of Stanley and
Zero, where the two families are together and an
advertisement is recorded together with the famous
baseball player: Clyde Livingston.

 HOLES

Argument

Holes tells the story of a boy named Stanley Yelnats,

who is accused of stealing sneakers from the
famous baseball player Clyde Livingston. Although
he is not guilty, the judge's verdict dictates that he
must be sent to a juvenile correctional facility called
Camp Lago Verde. Formerly this camp was a large
lake, in which his adventure begins, blaming his
great-great-grandfather for his bad luck. There,
Stanley learns that every day there is a huge hole to
be dug and that he has to accidentally find
something interesting to get the day off. Also, he
meets a group of boys, and of them it is Zero who
becomes his best friend. It will be with him with

whom he discovers the truth that this discipline
camp hides.
Because of the taunts that his friend receives from
Mr. Peraski and the Watcher, when he is learning to
read and write, Zero runs into the desert, preferring
death to staying there. Stanley after a few days,
goes in search of him, since he cannot lose his best
friend. Within hours of walking, he finds Zero under
a boat, which long ago sank in the lake. The two
friends have to get to the thumb-shaped mountain,
because in their family the story ran that their
great-great-grandfather found some way to stay
alive on said mountain for a long time, after Kate
"Kisses" Barlow stole everything his fortune.
Stanley carries his friend on his shoulders on the
way to the mountain, because of the little strength
he had. There they find a field of onions and small
pools of water, in order to survive. Thanks to that
they manage to stay alive and decide to return to
the camp to get their treasure. During all these
events Stanley was collecting evidence that proves
everything that had happened in the past, the
fortune of his family. Stanley manages to prove that

Kate "Kisses" Barlow (an innocent girl who ends up
becoming one of the most feared thieves) stole her
great-great-grandfather's fortune.
The two friends secretly return to the camp, so that
they can dig into the hole where they know the loot
is to be found. But, just as they unearth the treasure
they are seen by the Watcher and his two
companions, Mr. Peraski and Mr. Sir. They cannot
get out of the hole, because they are surrounded by
a species of very poisonous lizards. This animal is
reluctant to onion, so they do not bite the two
youngsters. Thanks to that they get out and be able
to discover the whole truth.
Throughout the book he tells of the curse of bad
luck that endures in Stanley's family for many
generations. It consisted of an Egyptian witch
cursing her great-great-grandfather with the bad
luck of him and his descendants if he did not go up
to the mountain to drink. When Stanley raise Zero to
the mountain and give him a drink, that bad luck
ends, since Zero is the great-grandson of said
woman. The entire fortune belongs to Stanley and
his family.

The novel ends with the two young people leaving
the camp, and the closure of this since it was
"illegal", only existed to find a chest that Kate
Barlow had hidden.

Characters

Main characters
• Stanley Yelnats: He is the main character in the
story. Stanley is interned in the Green Lake Camp
for a crime that he did not commit but that Zero did.
Thanks to Stanley, his family breaks the curse made
by "Madam Zeroni", who came from Zero's family.
• Zero: Stanley's partner and best friend inside
Camp Green Lake. The protagonist was the one who
helped him learn to read and write. His real name
was Héctor Zeroni. He was sent to camp for stealing
a pair of slippers from a store.
• Sir Sir: He is the manager of the Green Lake
Camp.
• Mr. Peraski: He is the monitor of the group that
Stanley is in at Camp Green Lake. He was in charge
of watching the boys dig the holes and bringing

them water every so often. At first, he helped
Stanley with what he could. He is nicknamed
"Mommy" by the boys
• Vigilante: This is what they called the cruel and
heartless Director of the Green Lake Camp. Who
wanted to erase all information from Héctor Zeroni.
Later when they went to find Stanley at the Green
Lake camp, she claimed not to know that Zero's
information had been erased.

Secondary characters
• Tic: Stanley's partner, whose real name was Brian,
who appears when Zero leaves the camp. He is sent
to the camp for stealing a car.
• X-ray: Companion from the Green Lake Camp.
Leader of the other boys in the camp. They called
him X-Ray because he was practically blind hence
his nickname. His real name is Rex. He is sent to
camp for selling dried weed, making people believe
it was marijuana.
• Squid: Companion of the Green Lake Camp. His
real name is Alan. He is sent to the camp for

assaulting a policeman when he tried to take a
bottle of beer from him.
• Magnet: Companion of the Green Lake Camp. His
real name is José. He is sent to camp for trying to
steal a dog from a pet shop.
• Zig-Zag: Green Lake Camp Companion. His real
name is Ricky. He is sent to camp after tampering
with his school's fire alarm
• Sobaco: Companion of the Green Lake Camp. His
real name is Theodore. He was sent to camp for
assaulting two boys in a movie theater.
• Clyde Livingston: Baseball player, who that year
was the player who had stolen the most bases. It
was from Livingston who had some sneakers stolen,
which were going to be auctioned at a charity.
Supposedly it was Stanley who stole the shoes and
for what he is accused but in truth it was not him.
• Ms. Morengo: Attorney for Stanley Yelnats. In the
end he manages to get him out of the camp for dark
reasons, the camp was like a concentration camp
where they exploited the boys to find a supposed
treasure. Exactly Kate Barlow's.

• Linda Miller: Wife of Charles Walker and former
student of Katherine Barlow.
• Charles Walker: Son of the wealthy neighbor of
Green Lake. He was known as "Trout" Walker
because his feet smelled fishy due to a fungus that
Clyde Livingston also had in the future.
• Sam: Dark skinned Green Lake Camp onion grower
110 years ago, for kissing Katherine Barlow, was
killed while trying to flee into the lake.
• Kate Barlow: She was a teacher from the Green
Lake people. She had a mutual romantic relationship
with Sam but as Sam is dark skinned and she is
white they killed Sam. Ever since Sam was killed she
became a highly wanted criminal in the west. The
real reason they have to dig holes in Lago Verde is
to find this woman's treasure.
• Vomitona: He was a boy Stanley never met. But
according to everyone and as shown in the movie, I
deliberately stepped on a snake and ended up in the
hospital. He was sent to the camp after stealing
jewelry from a museum.
• Madame Zeroni: She was Zero's great-great-
grandmother. He made a deal with Stanley Yelnats

fourth's great-great-grandfather, which was to give
him a pig so he could marry a girl. The great-great-
grandfather did not keep his end of the bargain and
was cursed along with all his successors by Madame
Zeroni.
