Modelling the M4 Sherman in 1:48 scale by Andrew Dextras.
re Sherman medium tank
has been widely haled by
a the ‘ten that woo
the war. With 60 odd years of
enlightenment behind us, we can
case (he Russian T34 would most
likely ft that description); however,
the significant contribution to
the war effort made by tis mass

‘AS a modeling subject, the
siherman family has few peers with
‘2 huge variety of base vrionts,
‘Add to tis the suspension,

machines such as swimming tanks,

no shortage of Sherman subjects

this may be seen as a goed idea,
In others it could be consiaered
‘a negative point. For example,
It You are loading up the model

etch parts and possibly some
individual workable tracks from
the aftermerket, the weight of the
model might cause some damage
tothe delicate aftermarket parts
when nanating wnat ends up being
a heavier, “lumsier” model. That
being sald, the die cast ower hull
|s smoothly cast and pre-primed
and provides a very positive
locating point for the suspension
and upper hull.
‘The injection moulded plastic
parts are upto Tamiya’ usual
fxcallent standard, Details are crisp
with n fash present. Waterside
ecals, although abit thick, are in
perfect register.cconsrrucrion
I began as usual with the
suspension, which inthe case of @
‘Sherman is more time consuming
than 3 734 or Panther for example
The VVSS suspension is very
ricely done for this scale and
the assembly Is very stury (as
‘opposed tothe very "webbly”
assembled fnal product in OML's
1172 Sherman series). However,
as always there is room for detail
Improvements. With this in ming
"illed 4 holes inte the forward
side of each bogie. The reason for
thie is thatthe main Bogle body
was meant tobe interchangeable
{and could be used on either side
of the tank. Therefore, the eturn
Folie bracket could be bolted to
the bogie on ether side depending
it te bogie was tobe installed on
the RHS oF LHS of the tank: the
bogie side not being used would be
left with 4 tapped holes. Once this
was done | added 3 bolts to the
Underside ofthe Boole, these are
very prominent so | would suggest
this as a basic requirement to any
Sherman medel you are building,
as It isan easy adaltion, Although |
{isnot ade them to tis made, the
skid plates mounted onthe top of
each bogie had 4 retaining bolts,
these can be added using 010
thick sheet plastic punched using
the smallest size in your punch and
de set. Take nate when attaching
the suspension assemblies tothe
die cast hl, the front bogie has @
smal nib on top ofits return role:
this is used for allgnment purposes
when the tracks are installed. Be
Careful as you wil Be using CA
jue for tis and you might not get
2 second chance Ifyou make an
error at ths point.
“The orwve sprockets are very
nicely done anc crisply moulded,
2: are te final drive covers. The
tracks themselves are excellent
and represent the common T48
rubber chevron type. Cleanup is
simple and assembly is quick ana
painless I's @ shame that more
manufacturers don't use thie
method on their 35 Sherman
kits. These plastic tracks will take
painting and weathering far beter
than any soft vinyl equivalent. One
negative however is as usual with
Tamiya Shermans, the idler wheels
have hollow backs as opposed to
being a mieror image of te front,
‘minus the hubcep.
Te front transmission cover is
nicely done with just some casting
rhumbers missing. The rear plate
is also wel cone, although the alr
fier retaining clips are ait
oversized and simplified, but this
|s not amajor problem as they
are mainly hiddon from view when
the upper hull goes on. With these
items glued to the model and the
exhaust added tothe upper hull,
It was time to jin the upper and
lower hulls together. Tamiya makes
the job easy forthe modeller by
supplying serews for this (although
as per their usual practice, they
{id not supply sponsons on ther
‘Sherman mode). Alignment is
perfect and there's no real way to
‘muck this one up unless your last
name is Wiggum.
“The Upper hull then received
some muctrneeded attention, The
welds on @ welded hull Sherman
tank ae raed, but for some
reason Tamiya eid the same thing
as on thei 135 version ofthis
Ma and made them all recesse.
With tis in ming took out many
lengtne of 10" round plastic sprue
and began gluing them into the
‘enanne's” that Tamiya provided
25 "welds". In the end tis proves
to simply the task as Tamiya had
