TEXT 2

• What do Banks do? Basically, they safeguard your deposits and give you
means of payment. You know that your money’s safe and that you will earn
interest on what you have deposited. Banks also offer financial advice, and
you can take advantage of another service-the safe deposit box- if you want
to keep your money and jewelry safe.
In the US the simplest account is the checking account/current account
which allows you to use a checkbook and withdraw money whenever you
wish. If your money is in a savings account, it earns money at a specified
annual rate but you usually have to give prior notice.
Many of us go to the bank to ask for a loan to the bank manager. If you want
to buy a house, you need a mortgage.

1. Money working for you: It’s also important to keep in mind that investing is
different form saving. With saving you accumulate funds for specific purpose
or to provide a nest-egg in case of emergency. People who invest do so in
anticipation of growth, which can take time, or to earn a return. So, while
savings can be a start to investing, when you invest you should also be
prepared to accept a degree of risk, since most investments are affected by
ever-changing market conditions, some of which impact positively, some
negatively.
2. Your tax position: You should be very well aware of your marginal tax rate
and status. Income from different sources is treated differently by federal and
provincial tax acts. Some types of investment income are more favorably
taxed than others. For example, a specified limit on capital gains is eligible
for the lifetime capital gains exemption.
3. Stocks: Buying shares in a company is a standard form of equity investment.
The shares are usually traded on the stock market and are purchased
through a broker.
4. Monetary Policy: It is important for monetary policy to aim at preserving the
value of money, at price stability, as its fundamental contribution to good
economic performance.
