Filipinos are known as settlers in many
parts of the world because they
consider themselves as chameleons,
they easily adapt to the different
environments they can find
themselves in, they thrive to survive,
and they know what survival is.
The Republic of the Philippines was named in honor of King Philip II of Spain in 1543.
Filipinos are originally from the southern part of Asia.
In the Philippines there are an estimated 175 languages spoken and almost all of them
are classified as Malayo-Polynesian languages and about eighty dialects. Among these
languages there are 13 that are indigenous with almost 1 million speakers.
For more than three centuries in the Philippines, Spanish was the official language
under Spanish colonial rule. It was spoken by 60% of the population, in the 1935s when
the Constitution of the Philippines named both Spanish and English as official
languages. But in 1939 the Tagalog language became the official national language.
The language named as "Filipino" was named in 1959 and from 1973 to the present
day Filipino and English are the most common languages among its habitat.
The Philippines is the only Christian country in Asia, a belief professed by more than
90% of the population. The largest minority religious group is the Muslim, whose
stronghold is the island of Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago. There is also an
independent Philippine church, some Buddhists, and a small number of animists.
CULTURE: The culture of the Filipinos is well known and appreciated by
many people around the world.
Filipinos are very fond of music, they use various materials to create
sound, and they like to perform dance and singing groups.
Christmas is one of the most beloved celebrations for Filipinos. Families
gather on December 24 to celebrate the traditional "Noche buena". The new

year is also celebrated by gathering all the relatives together again. It is
celebrated with knitted clothing and fruit on the table.
Filipinos are experts in sports, the traditional one of the country is called
Arnis which is a form of martial arts. Although they also enjoy watching
basketball, football or boxing games.
The family is very important to them and also includes uncles, grandparents,
cousins and other external relationships such as godparents or very close
friends. The children have loving godparents and when the parents are not
there it is the grandparents who take care of the little ones. It is common for
families to work together in the same companies. There are different social
classes.
THE KITCHEN: Filipinos have a very regular eating schedule: morning,
mid-morning, lunch, afternoon snack, and dinner.
Merienda designates both a mid-
morning and mid-afternoon snack
while pulutan (appetizers) are served
with alcoholic beverages. For dinner,
barbecued meat or seafood skewers
are popular.
Popular dishes brought from Spanish
and Southeast Asian influences are
afritada, asado, chorizo, empanadas, mani (roasted peanuts), paksiw (fish pork,
cooked in vinegar and water with some spices like garlic and pepper), pan de
sel, fried fish, sisig, torta, kare-kare, kilawen, pinakbet, pinapaitan and sinigang.
DEATH: Death in the Philippines is one of the most important occasions in
family life, for many Filipinos, the death of relatives is an opportunity to strengthen
family ties. To respect and honor the relationship with the deceased, relatives,
friends and even relatives working abroad come together.

After the death of a person, a nine-day novena period of prayers and masses
are offered to the deceased, although the beginning of the "Siyam na araw"
varies, but usually ends the week after death. Another period follows after
death, the 40-day mourning period.
FESTIVALS: held to celebrate a patron saint El Niño Jesus.
LIVING WITH PARENTS:
Filipinos value the presence of family much more
than anything else. Adult children living with their
parents is another Filipino tradition that makes
them exceptional until they get married.
TRADITIONAL COSTUMES
The Maria Clara is a traditional costume worn by Filipino women consisting of
the saya (long dress), the tapis (knee-length skirt), the camisa (collarless shirt)
and the handkerchief (stiff scarf).
Another traditional garment from the Philippines is the Barong Tagalog, which
is normally worn by men on special occasions

LA CULTURA: La cultura de los filipinos es muy conocida y
apreciada por muchas personas en todo el mundo.
Los filipinos son muy aficionados a la música , utilizan diversos
materiales para crear sonido y les gusta representar bailes y grupos de canto.
La Navidad es una de las celebraciones más queridas por los filipinos. Las
familias se reúnen el 24 de diciembre para celebrar la tradicional
“Nochebuena”. El año nuevo también lo celebran reuniendo a todos los
familiares de nuevo. Se celebra con ropa de punto y frutas en la mesa.
Los filipinos son expertos en deportes , el tradicional del país se llama
Arnis que es una forma de artes marciales. Aunque ellos también disfrutan
viendo partidos de baloncesto, fútbol o boxeo.
La familia es muy importante para ellos y también se incluyen a tíos, abuelos,
primos y a otras relaciones externas como padrinos o amigos muy cercanos.
Los niños tienen carios padrinos y cuando los padres no están son los abuelos
quienes cuidan de los pequeños. Es común que las familias trabajen juntas en
las mismas empresas. Existen diferentes clases sociales.
LA COCINA: Los filipinos tienen un horario de comidas muy regular:
mañana, media mañana, almuerzo, merienda y cena.
La merienda designa tanto al tentempié de media mañana como al de media
tarde mientras que los pulutan (aperitivos) son servidos con bebidas
alcohólicas. Para la cena se estilan los pinchos de carne o marisco a la
barbacoa.

Platos populares traídos de influencias españolas y del sudeste asiático son la
afritada, el asado, el chorizo, las empanadas, el maní (maní asado), el paksiw
(carne de cerdo de pescado, cocida en vinagre y agua con algunas especias
como ajo y pimienta), pan de sal, pescado frito, sisig, torta, kare-kare, kilawen,
pinakbet, pinapaitan y sinigang.
MUERTE: La muerte en Filipinas es una de las ocasiones más importantes
en la vida familiar,para muchos filipinos, la muerte de familiares es una oportunidad
para fortalecer los lazos familiares. Para respetar y honrar la relación con el difunto, los
parientes, amigos e incluso parientes que trabajan en el extranjero se reúnen.
Después de la muerte de una persona, se celebra un período de nueve días de
novena de oraciones y misas ofrecidas al difunto, aunque el comienzo del
"Siyam na araw" varía, pero suele terminar la semana después de la muerte.
Otro período sigue después de la muerte, el período de duelo de 40 días.
FIESTAS : celebran para celebrar a un santo patrón El Niño Jesus .
VIVIR CON LOS PADREs: Los filipinos valoran mucho más que
nada la presencia de la familia. Los hijos adultos que viven con sus padres son
otra tradición filipina que los hace excepcionales hasta que se casen
TRAJES TIPICOS:
La Maria Clara es un traje tradicional que llevan las mujeres filipinas formada
por la saya (vestido largo), el tapis (falda hasta la rodilla), la camisa (camisa sin
cuello) y el panuelo (bufanda rígida).
Otra prenda tradicional de Filipinas es el Tagalo de Barong, que los hombres
usan normalmente en ocasiones especiales
