Head and shoulders, knees and toes! Learn how to say body parts in this Spanish vocabulary
lesson, from la cabeza to los dedos del pie and everything in between. Then, gain some practice by
saying what body parts you use to do certain activities.

Head and shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes. Head and shoulders, knees and toes, knees
and toes.' I bet you remember singing this song as a child, because body parts are some of the first
words we learn how to say, and today we're going to learn them in Spanish!

First, let's take a look at the entire body, or cuerpo.

II. DAILY ROUTINE/HABITUAL ACTIONS

Do you already know how to talk about habits and routine actions in Spanish?
Read the paragraph below and understand what is it all about.

¡Hola! Me llamo Mildred. Tengo 50 a ños y vivo en Maragndon.. Hoy te cantare un poco sobre
mi rutina diaria. Todos los dias me despierto a las cinco de la mañana. Me levanto y me cepillo
los dientes. Luego, tomo una ducha como a las 5:20 am. Me visto, tomo una taza de agua
caliente y cocino mi desayuno. Me gusta comer saludable. Despues me voy a mi trabajo. Soy
una maestra. Regreso a casa a las 4:00pm.

Questions:
1. ¿Como se llama una mujer mencionado en un parafo?
2. ¿Donde vive ella?
3. ¿Cuantos años tiene?
4. ¿A que hora se despierta por la mañana?
5. ¿Que hace at 5:20 por la mañana?

Take a look at this one. (Taken from Google)

Yo (me levanto) a las 6 de la mañana (get up). Luego me baño y (desayuno) con mi familia (have
breakfast). Voy a clases a las 7: 30. Después de clases (regreso)(go back) a mi casa, almuerzo y
(hago mis tareas) (do my homework).
Basically, paragraph one and paragraph two talk about an actions that people usually do which can be
part of their daily routine which becomes a habit.
Practica I:
Go back and think of your morning routine. Write at least 5 habitual actions that you do on a daily
basis. Jot them down in your notebook. Save this for future use.
Practica 2:
Read!
Por la noche, ceno junto con mis padres y luego voy al gimnasio más cercano a hacer ejercicio. Me
gusta hacer ejercicio para tener energía siempre y mantener mi cuerpo saludable. Al regresar a casa,
leo las noticias más importantes, juego con mi perro, consulto mis redes sociales y por último me voy
a dormir. Mi rutina diaria es bastante relajada.
Look for the different activities done in the paragraph. Write them in your notebook.
II-A. TELLING TIME
[Link] (taken from Google)
Even though everybody has a cellphone these days, there will probably come a moment in your life
when you will need to ask someone what the time is.

 How to ask what the time is

¿Qué hora es?
What time is it?
(Literally "What hour is it?")
¿Tiene hora?
Do you have the time?
(Literally "Do you have the hour?")
Important: Even though "tiempo" means "time" (and, confusingly, "weather"), you never use the
word "tiempo" to ask what the time is.

 How to say what the time is

This is fairly simple, although there are a couple of little tricks:

Es la una - It's one'o'clock

Son las dos - It's two'o'clock
Son las tres - It's three'o'clock
Son las cuatro - It's four'o'clock
Son las cinco - It's five'o'clock
Son las seis - It's six'o'clock
Son las siete - It's seven'o'clock
Son las ocho - It's eight'o'clock
Son las nueve - It's nine'o'clock
Son las diez - It's ten'o'clock
Son las once - It's eleven'o'clock
Son las doce - It's twelve'o'clock
You'll see that the verb "ser" ("to be") goes before the time. This will always be "son", except for when
you're saying "one'o'clock", when it will be "es".

You'll also see that the feminine article (la/las) goes before the number. It's feminine because it's
referring to "la hora". Again, this will always be "las", except in the case of one'o'clock, when it's the
singular "la", because it's just one hour

 You might also hear:

Es el mediodía - It's noon / midday

Es la medianoche - It's midnight
 Is it morning or evening?
In many Spanish-speaking countries, you'll use the 24-hour clock, so you won't need to clarify whether
that dentist appointment is at two in the afternoon, or two in the morning.

But in case you do, you'll do it like this:

Son las dos de la mañana - It's two in the morning

Son las dos de la tarde - It's two in the afternoon
Son las ocho de la noche - It's eight in the evening

 When does "the night" start?

In most English speaking countries you'd probably start talking about "the night/evening" around 6pm.
But in a lot of Spanish-speaking countries, you wouldn't roll out the "de la noche" until around 8pm.

 And when it's not exactly on the hour?

Most of the time it won't be exactly 2'o'clock, so here's how to deal with that:

1:40

Es la una y cuarenta - It's one forty

(Literally "It's one and forty")
1:40
Son las dos menos veinte - It's twenty minutes to two
(Literally "It's two minus twenty")
1:45
Es la una y cuarenta y cinco - It's one forty-five
(Literally "It's one and forty-five")
1:45
Son las dos menos cuarto - It's a quarter to two
(Literally "It's two minus a quarter")
2:10
Son las dos y diez - It's ten past two
(Literally "It's two and ten")
2:15
Son las dos y cuarto - It's quarter past two
(Literally "It's two and a quarter")
2:30
Son las dos y media - It's half past two
(Literally "It's two and a half")
Did you see how there are two ways of saying "twenty to two" or "quarter to two"? Just like we can
either say "it's one forty" or "it's twenty to two", you can do the same thing in Spanish.
 Saying when something will happen

When you want to talk about what time a class is, or what time you'll meet someone, you'd use "at" in
English. ("I'll meet you at seven"). In Spanish you'll use "a las..."

Tengo mi clase de español a las cinco - I have my Spanish class at five

¿Nos encontramos a las siete? - Shall we meet at seven?

II-B. Spanish Days of the Week

How to say the days of the week in Spanish
[Link]
Days of the week are all masculine in gender and they are not capitalized in writing. The definite
article is not used after the verb ser, but at all other times it is required and there is slight change in
meaning if it is singular or plural: el lunes = on Monday but los lunes = on Mondays

Monday Lunes
Tuesday Martes
Wednesday Miercoles
Thursday Jueves
Friday Viernes
Saturday Sabado
Sunday Domingo
Day El dia
Week La semana
Weekend El fin de semana
Today Hoy
Tonight Esta noche
Last night Anoche
Yesterday Ayer
Tomorrow Mañana
My birthday Mi cumpleaños
Next Proximo / Proxima
Last Pasado /Pasada
Day before yesterday Anteayer
Day after tomorrow Pasado mañana
The following day El dia siguiente
The day before La vispera

II-C. What Are the Months in Spanish?

Months of the year in Spanish are always masculine. Note also that in Spanish months, just like days
of the week, are not capitalized unless they are at the beginning of a sentence.

 enero (January)
 febrero (February)
 marzo (March)

 abril (April)
 mayo (May)
 junio (June)
 julio (July)
 agosto (August)
 septiembre (September)
 octubre (October)
 noviembre (November)
 diciembre (December)
