crocodiliformes.

The mammalian lineage inherited the basal amniote skull, a moderately ossified structure providing
partial support and protection to the brain while anchoring craniocervical musculature. In basal
therapsids the chondrocranium associated with the sensory capsules and the braincase was large
and ossified extensively. The braincase was small and dorsally located, supported by a ventral
interorbital septum linking it to the mesocranium, a prominent feature of the mid-line axis of the pre-
hypophysial skull. The parachordal-derived skeleton distal to the septum is the least modified portion
of the mammalian skull. Division of the skull into rostal and distal units reflects their distinct
embryological origins, the rostral portion including cells from the neural crest while the distal is
mesodermal. Ganglia of cranial nerves V and VII are ancestrally extracranial and sandwiched between
the primary wall deriving from the chondrocranium and the variously ossified elements of the
splanchnocranium, or neomorphs. In early mammals, extensive remnants of the primary wall are
preserved, separating the contents of the cavum epipthericum from the cranial cavity proper.
Multituberculates, gobiconodontids and therian stem taxa such as Vincelestes represent cranial
patterns not found in living mammals. Monotremes have a stouter chondrochranium than therians
but their pilae and primary wall is less substantial than that in several fossil stem therians,
suggesting an independent reduction in the crown-group taxa. An expansive lateral braincase wall
can be hypothesized to correlate with an increase and sophistication of the masticatory musculature
and done in part at the expense of a free epipterygoid, which gets subsumed in the formation of a
lateral wall. The fate of the ascending process of the epipterygoid is varied among early mammals,
suggesting a dynamic evolutionary history for this part of the skull. Despite a large diversity of
shapes and relationships, the quadrate, the proximal portion of the palatoquadrate, loses most of its
jaw-joint function and becomes smaller and predominantly auditory. The mandibular portion of the
first arch, Meckel’s and its derivatives, have a complex story dominated by reduction in size and
detachment from the jaw. Within this outline, robust and ossified Meckel’s appear to be a condition
dominant in the therian stem lineage and likely present in the last common ancestor of therians.
Different areas of the skull have evolved at different rates and with particular local trends that seem
controlled mostly by their predicted embryological origin, within a general framework of sensory
sophistication, brain size increase and complex mastication.

Gastroliths (stomach stones) are hard object within the digestive tract of many vertebrate animals
that help to grind food in gastric digestion. The presence of a hypothetical avian-style gastric mill has
been reported but also questioned among herbivorous sauropodomorph dinosaurs. The PVSJ 1108 is
a partially preserved articulated sauropodomorph skeleton found in the Rhaetian-Hettangian
Quebrada del Puma Formation (Marayes-El Carrizal Basin, southeastern San Juan Province). It
preserves articulated antero-mid dorsal vertebrae, dorsal ribs, left humerus, radius, ulna and almost
complete manus. Additionally, PVSJ 1108 preserves a claster of approximately forty small and
medium size (2 to 5cm) stones in the abdominal region. The stones are sub-rounded with polished
surface, surrounding by ribs and dorsal vertebrae. The fine-grained sediments containing the
specimen are devoid of similar clasts. On the basis of sedimentological and taphonomical evidences,
further the large size and number of stones, the claster accumulated in the abdominal cavity is
identified here as a group of gastroliths. Considering the size of the preserved postcranial elements,
the relation between the assumed masticatory apparatus size and the size of the stones preserved in
the abdominal region, it suggests that they were ingested as a result of lithophagy behavior, rather
than accidental swallowing. Gastroliths have been occasionally reported in non-avian dinosaurs and
this represents the second record among basal forms of Sauropodomorpha, together to
Massospondylus from South Africa. Furthermore, it is the first record of gastroliths among non-
sauropod sauropodomorphs outside South Africa, providing new information on the biology and
evolutionary history of Sauropodomorpha during early Mesozoic of Pangea.

Abelisaurids are medium-to-large sized theropod dinosaurs that outweighed the carnivorous faunae
during the Late Cretaceous of Gondwana. These predators are specially abundant in the Cretaceous
fossil strata of Patagonia, which hold the best record for this group. Despite the possible Middle
Jurassic origin of Abelisauridae, the first definitive forms are known from the Early Cretaceous of
Argentina, Brazil and Africa. Later on, although abelisaurids appear in almost all beds of the Late
Cretaceous of Gondwana, they are virtually wordlwide unknown for the Coniacian strata. Here we
describe a new abelisaurid specimen (MCF-PVPH-380), from the Turonian-Coniacian Portezuelo
Formation, Patagonia, Argentina. MCF-PVPH-380 is based on several axial and appendicular
elements, and shows some distinctive features such as a peculiar pattern of rugosities on the lateral
surface of the fibula, and a calcaneum with a dorsoventrally deep lateral wall. Furthermore, the
posterior caudal vertebrae (some of these affected by pathological processes) show a slightly
different morphology from any other abelisaurid. The microstructural features of the appendicular
bones of MCF-PVPH-380 show the specimen was a subadult individual at the time of its dead, but
had achieved sexual maturity. MCF-PVPH-380 is recovered as an unstable taxon within Brachyrostra,
either as a sister taxon of the Furileusauria or in several positions within this clade. Despite their
phylogenetic relationships, MCF-PVPH-380 represents the first abelisaurid record recognized from
the Turonian-Coniacian interval, increasing the diversity of this theropod clade at the time of a South
American tetrapod turnover, global climate change, and mass extinction events recorded worldwide
in the marine realm.

Skull pneumaticity is an archosaurian attribute, well-known in extant crocodilians and birds, and
described in many crurotarsan clades and saurischian dinosaurs. The skull of ornithischians, one of
the two dinosaur subclades, is rather solid and lacks well-developed pneumatic recesses that invade
within the bones, with derived species characterized by forming complex airway arrangements.
However, the skull pneumaticity of early ornithischians is poorly known. Only a recent description of
Lesothosaurus (likely a basal genasaurian) recognizes depressed regions in the antorbital fossa
(maxilla), the palatine, and the basicranium (basioccipital, basisphenoid) that may be related to
pneumatic recesses. Here we present the 3D reconstructions of internal spaces and superficial
pneumatic fossae in skull bones of the early Jurassic heterodontosaurid ornithischian Manidens
condorensis (MPEF-PV 3211 and 3809, Cañadón Asfalto Formation, Chubut), describing sinuses and
diverticula for three different cranial pneumatic systems: antorbital (paranasal), paratympanic and
pharyngeal. The antorbital fenestra in the maxilla opens anteroventrally by a narrow and long slit into
a wide space within the maxilla and lateral to the tooth roots. These are interpreted as two diverticula
homologous to the interalveolar and promaxillary recesses of the antorbital paranasal air sinus in
non-avian theropods and birds. The lacrimal shows a small internal space that opens laterally by a
foramen and a notch, likely corresponding to a lacrimal diverticulum of the antorbital sinus (as in
theropods). The rostral, dorsal, and caudal tympanic recesses from the paratympanic system are
recognized (with the first forming two uncommon dorsal diverticula within the basisphenoid). The
connection to each other and their relation with the cranial musculature are to be described. The
basisphenoid shows a deep ventral basisphenoidal recess, and a small pit-like subsellar recess
between the basipterygoid processes. Internal spaces are identified in the jugal, squamosal,
ectopterygoid, quadrate, basisphenoid, basioccipital, supraoccipital, otoccipital, and prootics,
identified as cancellous structures. No nasal or frontoparietal pneumatic recesses are present in
Manidenscondorensis. Comparisons indicate that similar pharingotympanic systems are present in
Lesothosaurus, Heterodontosaurus, and Scelidosaurus, but the complex paranasal pneumatic system of
Manidens seems uncommon among ornithischians. Further research is needed to better understand
whether the presence of complex antorbital (paranasal) sinuses in ornithischians is 1) a primitive
feature shared with saurischians and other archosaurs and lost in more derived ornithischians, or 2)
lost at the base of Ornithischia and convergently appears among heterodontosaurids as a derived
feature, characterizing the construction of the heterodontosaurid skull as more complex than
previously though.

Apodichelys lucianoi is a pelomedusoid turtle from the Upper Cretaceous Jandaíra Formation of Brazil.
Described in the 1950’s, it is known from a single specimen housed at the Museu de Ciências da Terra
(MCT) in Rio de Janeiro – MCT.R.418, a steinkern preserving an imprint of a shell and some
fragmentary bone remains. Owing to the paucity of known material and the limited anatomical
information available, the knowledge about Apodichelys is very poor. To address this issue, we
subjected the holotype to a computed microtomography, aiming to uncover new data about its
internal anatomy. The analysis was able to clearly distinguish remaining bone fragments from the
carbonate matrix, and the resulting tomographical slices were processed with the software CT
Analyzer to create a tridimensional model of the steinkern. Preserved bony elements include portions
of the left epiplastron, axillary and inguinal processes, dorsal vertebrae, dorsal rib heads and pelvic
girdles, most of them concealed in external view. The axillary and inguinal processes are verticalized
and advance far medially into the shell, forming a strongly developed bridge. Remains of the dorsal
sequence include dorsal vertebrae 1–10, but only vertebrae 2–7 are preserved intact. These
vertebrae are shaped like an elongate spool in dorsal view, with the cranial and caudal extremities
being wider than the middle section. The ventral surface of the vertebrae ends in an acute keel. The
rib heads located more cranially in the shell appear as short, horizontally oriented cylindrical
processes, with an intervertebral connection to the dorsal sequence. Parts of all three pelvic bones
are preserved, but the ilia are more fragmentary than the pubes and ischia. The pubis bears a thin,
dorso-ventrally flattened process which projects from its lateral process and extends cranio-
medially. The suture with the xiphiplastron is elliptical in shape. The ventral process of the ischium
would have been connected to the xiphiplastron by a roughly triangular suture. The sutural area is
adjacent to a small elongate process, which runs cranio-medially and connects at the midline with a
matching process from the other ischium. Both ilia are very fragmented but judging from the shape of
the remaining cavity where the bones used to be, the dorsal process would have had a roughly
triangular shape, with concave sides. This new morphological information expands our knowledge
about the little known Apodichelys lucianoi, the only turtle species formally described from the Upper
Cretaceous of Northeastern Brazil.

pampeana (Buenos Aires: MLS 99, Santa Fe: MACN-Pv 14394, MSL136, MRS 74 y Córdoba: CORD-PZ
4570) y patagónicos (alero Dos Herraduras, Chile: MPAHND 73812, cueva Última Esperanza, Chile:
MNHN SGO 360, PIMUZ AA/V4293 y cueva Las Buitreras, Santa Cruz, Argentina: MACN-Pv 19033),

Sustained fieldwork at the fossil locality Cerro Zeballos, Collón Curá Formation (middle–late Miocene)
in northwestern Chubut province, has produced abundant fossil vertebrates (fishes, anurans,
tortoises, marsupials, rodents, xenarthrans, and notoungulates). Here we present new findings of
squamate and avian remains. Squamates are represented by several lizards and one snake. The
fossils assigned to lizards consist in tooth-bearing bones (maxillae and dentaries), most of which are
assigned to Tupinambinae Teiidae based on the extended anterior aperture of Meckel´s canal and/or
of subpleurodont tooth implantation (LIEB PV 5172, 5293, 5301, 5302, 5310 5312, 5314, 7669).
Some of these fossils assigned to Tupinambinae preserve weakly bicuspid posterior teeth, which
indicate affinities with Callopistes, allowing the resolution of previous uncertainties regarding
Tupinambinae record of Collón Curá Formation. Two other lizard specimens are interesting, LIEB PV
5294 presents a rare tooth morphology, with an evident bicuspid condition where the mesial cusp is
dominant, indicating probably a new Tupinambinae taxon. LIEB PV 5313 is a delicate, sub-rectangular
(i.e., not cuneiform) dentary, with a closed, fused Meckel’s canal, no anterolateral process of the
coronoid, pleurodont teeth with parallel tooth outlines, corresponding to a Pleurodonta lizard. Finally,
among the squamate fossils, a partially articulated series of precloacal vertebrae (LIEP PV 5311) are
preliminary assigned to an indeterminate snake. Bird fossil consists on two isolated remains: 1) LIEB
PV 5299 is a fragment of a right trochlea metatarsi III assigned to a medium-sized Phorusrhacidae
based on the presence of a canal present between trochlea metatarsorum III and IV, and a scar at the
end of the dorsal margin of the trochlea III; and 2) LIEB PV 5300 is a right shaft of tarsometatarsus of
a Falconidae related to Falco based on the presence of a marked furrow proximally to the small
foramen vasculare distale, a sharp lateral edge, and by a marked furrow that runs from the facies
subcutanea medialis to the facies dorsalis. Therefore, the new specimens of at least two tupinambine
teiids (cf. Callopistes and a new taxon), a pleurodont lizard, a snake, a falconid, and a terror bird,
increase significantly the vertebrate diversity of the Cerro Zeballos fossil locality.

provisoriamente asignado a Leiosauridae.

huesos impares (supraoccipital) adquieren mayor importancia y centralidad.

Patagosphenos watuku y Palaeopleurosaurus posidoniae) y actuales (i.e. Sphenodon punctatum).
No

The South America fossil record of Passeriformes is scarce, hence the available information about
their characteristics and phylogenetic relations is limited and challenging, especially regarding their
skull and endocast (a proxy of the brain morphology). Pseudoseisuropsis nehuen is a fossil species from
the Miramar Formation (early-middle Pleistocene) of Miramar, Buenos Aires province, Argentina. This
taxon is included in Furnariidae, one of the most diverse Neotropical passerines, although its relation
with other furnariids is still discussed. We aim to describe the endocranial anatomy of this species
and compare it with other Furnariidae in order to infer ecological and phylogenetic aspects. Brain 3D
modelling was performed based on micro-CT scans obtained from the holotype specimen (MLP-69-
XII-3-9) in a Bruker Skyscan 1272 available at the “Facultad de Odontología” of the “Universidad de
Buenos Aires”. The endocast agrees with an airencephalic type of brain. The telencephalon is wider
than longer and dorsoventrally compressed, as is typical of furnariids. The olfactory bulb is wide and
short, although its boundaries are not well anatomically demarcate thus they are not easy to identify
in the 3D image. The eminentiae sagittales (wulsts) are wide and subtriangular. There are two small
but conspicuous protuberances caudally to the wulsts, disposed at each side of the fissura
interhemispherica, as observed only in Lepidocolaptes angustirostris. The cerebellum’s overall shape is
similar to that of Pseudoseisura lophotes. It is longer than wider and there are seven visible folds, like
in Furnarius rufus. The contact with the telencephalon has an “U” shape, as in L. angustirostris,
Coryphistera alaudina, P. lophotes and F. rufus. The flocculi are short, stout, rostrally curved, as in most
Furnariidae. The elliptical and rostrally projected optic lobes are dorsally overlapped by the
telencephalic hemispheres. Their contact with the telencephalon draws a curved line, similar to L.
angustirostris. Cranial nerve I is small and each branch has an independent origin. Regarding the
vasculature, there is no intercarotid anastomosis as in all Furnariidae. Of all the endocasts here
compared, the endocast of L. angustirostris, a scansorial Dendrocolaptine (Furnariidae) that feeds
mainly on insects, is the one that resembles the most to P. nehuen. This allow us to think that P.
nehuen is phylogenetically related to the subfamily Dendrocolaptinae, as mentioned in previous
phylogenetic hypothesis, and that it may share its locomotion and feeding behaviour.

Most Triassic terrestrial diapsids belong to two major clades: Lepidosauromorpha and
Archosauromorpha. Nevertheless, the phylogenetic relationships of some Triassic diapsids have
remained uncertain for decades because of limited anatomical knowledge or unusual combinations of
features. One of such enigmatic forms is the small-sized Sphodrosaurus pennsylvanicus (Franklin and
Marshall College, North Museum, no. 2321) from the Upper Triassic (Norian) Hammer Creek
Formation in the Newark Basin of the Newark Supergroup in Pennsylvania (USA). It was initially
identified as a procolophonid parareptile, later as a probable rhynchosaur archosauromorph, and
more recently as an indeterminate neodiapsid. Here the only known specimen of Sphodrosaurus
pennsylvanicus is revised, providing novel information about its anatomy, and it is scored in
quantitative phylogenetic analysis for the first time. This analysis is focused on Permo-Triassic
neodiapsids and its data matrix is composed of 190 terminals and 887 characters. In this analysis,
Sphodrosaurus pennsylvanicus is recovered as a doswelliid proterochampsian within
Archosauromorpha. The position of Sphodrosaurus pennsylvanicus within the clade Doswelliidae +
Proterochampsidae is supported by the cervical vertebrae with a median longitudinal keel that
extends ventrally to the centrum rims and the pedal unguals of digits II–IV longer than all non-ungual
phalanges of the same digit, whereas this species shares with other doswelliids the absence of an
external mandibular fenestra, the presence of posterior cervical and anterior dorsal ribs with short
tubercula, and a plate-like pubis without an anterior apron. The phylogenetic position of
Sphodrosaurus pennsylvanicus as a doswelliid removes it as a potentially unusual component of the
Triassic vertebrate assemblages of North America. Previous authors recognized that a key feature of
Sphodrosaurus pennsylvanicus is its proportionally very large skull and the Phylogenetic Generalized
Least Squares regressions confirmed that Sphodrosaurus pennsylvanicus has a larger skull than the
vast majority of Permo-Triassic diapsids. The optimization in the phylogeny of the skull width versus
presacral length ratio shows that the most likely explanation is that the extremely broad skull of
Sphodrosaurus pennsylvanicus is autapomorphic, but it is not unique among archosauromorphs, being
paralleled by hyperodapedontine rhynchosaurs and the proterochampsian Proterochampsa
barrionuevoi. Exploration of a morphospace of linear measurements shows that Sphodrosaurus
pennsylvanicus shares strong similarities with the probably semi-aquatic Proterochampsa barrionuevoi,
suggesting that the former species may have had a similar mode of life. Linear Discriminant analysis
of ungual functional categories found that the only preserved ungual of Sphodrosaurus pennsylvanicus
was suitable for digging or some other way of substrate processing.

Neogene was a time of important ecological and taxonomic diversification for toothed whales or
odontocetes, when most of the modern fauna was established. At the start of the Neogene (i.e. early
Miocene), some groups of odontocetes achieved a great morphological and ecological diversification,
however the fossil record for this time is scarce. The early Miocene marine (Gaiman Formation)
sediments from Patagonia (Argentina) are worldwide known for preserving a rich assemblage of
odontocetes, including platanistoids, physeteroids, kentriodontids and eurhinodelphinids. In the last
decades, the early Miocene marine outcrops have been the focus of many new cetacean discoveries,
expanding our knowledge of the radiation of crown odontocetes. In this work, we describe a toothed
whale from Gaiman Formation (MPEF 1362; Estancia El crisol, Chubut province), and analyze its
phylogenetic relationships. The specimen represents a small to medium size odontocete (270 to 315
cm of total length) and is represented by an incomplete skull, lacking the rostrum, ear bones and
lacrimojugal. The anatomical and taxonomic analyses showed that this specimen cannot be referred
to any already known species and is characterized by a unique combination of character among which
are: premaxillae joining medially in the mesorostral groove, a slit-like external auditory meatus,
presence of premaxillary crests and very narrow external bony nares. Thus, a new genus and species
is proposed. The phylogenetic analyses recovered MPEF 1362 in the stem group of Delphinidae +
Ziphidae + Physeteroidea, closely related to Northern Hemisphere species (e.g. Yaquinacetus,
Squaloziphius). This new taxon highlights the importance of the Miocene marine sediments from
Patagonia, and expands the paleobiogeographic distribution of squaloziphids- like forms to the
Southwestern Atlantic Ocean.

The record of Paleozoic fishes is sparse in South America; Argentina is not an exception. Only
Chondrichthyes and Actinopterygii remains have been recovered previously from the Permian of
Argentina, however, no Sarcopterygii have been reported before. The aim of the present
communication is to document the first record of Sarcopterygii from the Upper Paleozoic
(Carboníferous-Permian) from Argentina in the San Rafael basin. The El Imperial Formation
(Serpukhovian-Cisuralian) integrates a transitional sequence that grades from glacimarine to
continental environments. The facies association with fossils corresponds to dark gray shaly
concretions and is recorded from the middle section of the sequence. In the concretions, and in
association with the scales, brachiopods, bivalves, gastropods, and conularids are found. The studied
material consists of five scales that are preserved in small concretions that are housed in the Museo
de Historia Natural de San Rafael. Macromorphological and microhistological preparations and
descriptions were made under binocular microscopy (MHNSR-Pv 1197; 1198; 1204; 1205) and under
the petrographic standard methodology (MHNSR-Pv 1200PHa, PHc). Macromorphological analysis
shows round scales with concentric growth lines at the covered anterior part and ornamentations on
the free posterior field. Microhistological slides revealed a compact laminar structure composed of a
birefringence alternating with a very ordered layer of fibrous tissue. A pore-canal system typical for
cosmine, is not present. These elasmoid-type scales are found in the fossil record of sarcopterygians
such as Onychodontida from the Devonian or Rhizodontida Devonian to Carboniferous or Actinistia,
unlikely known from the Late Devonian to present time. This study contributes to the scarce records
of early osteichthyans in Argentina and to our knowledge of the history of early Osteichthyes from
this region of South America during the Paleozoic.

Paleopathology is the study of diseases and traumatic injuries that cause visible abnormalities of the
skeleton in fossil vertebrates. In pterosaurs, only very few osteopathologies cases have been
mentioned, such as infections, arthritis and possible tumors, being the fractures rarely reported. The
aim of this work is to describe and analyze a bone anomaly present in an isolated third phalanx of the
wing finger (MIC-V47) referred to Pterodaustro guinazui. The phalanx MIC-V47 was recovered from
outcrops at the “Loma del Pterodaustro” site, from Lagarcito Formation (Lower Cretaceous). The
material is deposited at the collection of the Museo Interactivo de Ciencias (MIC), San Luis, Argentina.
Based on comparisons with observations from the paleopathological and modern veterinary
literature, potential etiologies are discussed. Macroscopic examination reveals that MIC-V47 exhibits
a conspicuous bowing and a localized proliferative bone growth. This extends around the entire
circumference of the distal diaphysis. The surface of the bone growth is mainly smooth with
exception of certain areas where an irregular texture is observed. The rest of the phalanx shows a
robust appearance compared with other phalanges preserved of the same species. The abnormal
bone of the phalanx is consistent with a fracture followed by infection, but other possible causes such
as osteopetrosis cannot be ruled out. Additional information regarding the internal aspect of the
element, such as that derived from histological or computed tomography data is necessary to clarify
the cause of the anomaly. Poor healing of the infection could lead to misalignment of the fractured
parts, which possibly compromised the individual survival.

Clypeotherium magnum Scillato-Yané, the only species of that monospecific genus, is only known
through its type material, represented by osteoderms from the carapace (MLP 61-IV-11-76),
collected in 1960 (and described in 1977) by MLP staff at El Pajarito fossil locality in Chubut province
(Sarmiento Formation, late Oligocene, Deseadan SALMA), and also by osteoderms (MCNAM) from
Quebrada Fiera locality in Mendoza province (Agua de la Piedra Formation, late Oligocene, Deseadan
SALMA) described and assigned to Clypeotherium sp. in 2021. A new specimen of C. magnum is
identified (AMNH 96285), represented by 21 probably associate osteoderms of the carapace,
collected in 1933 by AMNH staff (Scarritt Expedition led by G.G. Simpson) at Cañadón de las Víboras
fossil locality in Chubut province (Sarmiento Formation, late Oligocene, Deseadan SALMA). The
diagnostic characters of C. magnum, also present in the new specimen, includes: 1) osteoderms with a
large flat or slightly convex central figure; 2) few peripheric figures restricted to the anterior and
lateral regions of the osteoderms; 3) large foramina on the sulci that delimit the figures of the
osteoderms. Two of the osteoderms are of special significance, because they belong to the
laterodorsal region of the carapace, having a quadrangular outline; the exposed surface shows a
“rosette” pattern, with a central figure displaced posteriorly, surrounded by 3-4 anterior large
peripherical figures, and by 3 smaller posterior figures; these posterior figures, although reduced in
size, are present. The remaining osteoderms show a typical “Glyptatelinae” pattern, having mostly 3
large anterior peripheral figures and the absence (or only 1) of posterior peripheral figures. The
absence of posterior peripherical figures is considered a plesiomorphic character, meanwhile, the
presence in Clypeotherium magnum (at least in some regions of the carapace) should be analyzed in
future phylogenetical studies. This new specimen increases the geographical distribution of the
genus to a third fossil locality (although still restricted to high latitudes) and the detailed description
and comparison of this specimen will lead us to a better understanding of this poorly known
cingulate.

The ornithischian fossil record of Argentina has increased in recent years, with the ornithopod clade
exhibiting the greatest paleodiversity. The outcrops of Bajo de la Carpa Formation (Santonian, Upper
Cretaceous) at the Cerro Overo-La Invernada area (Rincón de los Sauces, Neuquén province) are a
hotspot for ornithopod remains. From this area, the articulated remains of Mahuidacursor lipanglef
(MAU-Pv-CO-596), and several indeterminate ornithopod postcranial elements have been found. In
recent years, our multidisciplinary team has carried out numerous field expeditions in the area,
collecting among other remains the postcranial materials presented in this contribution. The new
postcranial bones consisting of a dorsal vertebral centrum (MAU-Pv-CO-683), a proximal fragment of
a pubis (MAU-Pv-CO-681), a proximal and a distal end of a right femur (MAU-Pv-CO-684), and a
proximal and a distal end of a metatarsal II (MAU-Pv-CO-682). These elements show the following
set of morphological features that allow us to refer them to Ornithopoda, and preliminary to
elasmarians indet.: a) the spool-shape of the dorsal vertebral centrum, which are amphiplatyan and
longer anteroposteriorly than dorsoventrally; b) a subcircular anterior articular surface of the dorsal
vertebral centrum; c) a subquadrangular transverse section of the femur; d) a greater trochanter
located at the same level than the femoral head and has a sigmoidal lateral margin in proximal view;
e) a pendant fourth trochanter located on the proximal half of the femur; and f) metatarsal II laterally
compressed in proximal view. The dorsal vertebra (MAU-Pv-CO-683) shows unfused neurocentral
sutures and numerous nutritional foramina in lateral, medial, and ventral views. In addition, the pubis
has a closed obturator foramen, probably related to its ontogenetic state. The new remains increase
the record and improve our knowledge about the paleobiogeography of elasmarian ornithopods
during the Santonian in northern Patagonia.

Mahuidacursor lipanglef (MAU-Pv-CO-596) was an ornithopod that were found in the Cerro Overo-La
Invernada area, in the Bajo de la Carpa Formation (Santonian, Upper Cretaceous) near what is now
Rincón de los Sauces (Neuquén province), in an exceptional state of preservation. Among them, the
almost complete right arm (humerus, radius and ulna) was excavated. Also, numerous remains
identified as indeterminate ornithopods have been found in the same area. These bones pertain to
several individuals of different ontogenetic stages, including juveniles. Here we described a new
humerus (MAU-Pv-CO-654) which could belong to a juvenile or sub-adult specimen of M. lipanglef.
MAU-Pv-CO-654 has a gracile appearance and presents characteristics that relate it to the Elasmaria
clade and to M. lipanglef, such as the scarce development of the deltopectoral crest. It also has a very
bowed shaft, a characteristic it shares with basal and derived ornithopods (i.e. elasmaria). The
proximal end is slightly lateromedially extended, being wider than the distal end. As for the distal end,
the condyles are subequal. The morphological characteristics that indicate that MAU-PV-CO-654
would be a juvenile or sub-adult specimen are: a) poorly marked muscle markings in the lateral region
of the deltopectoral crest; b) low degree of ossification, both at the proximal, distal ends and in the
shaft; and c) its length is 24% shorter than that of the humerus of M. lipanglef. In MAU-Pv-CO-654,
the bowing of the humeral diaphysis is slightly more pronounced than in the humerus of M. lipanglef
being a probable case of individual varibility as in other ornithopods. Based on its characteristics it
could be classified as juvenile cf. Mahuidacursor, in the absence of further comparative materials being
found.

The Paleozoic sarcopterygian fossil record in South America is represented mainly by isolated scales
retrieved from the Permian of Bolivia, Brazil, and Uruguay, being the oldest records those of the Late
Carboniferous of Brazil consisting of isolated and incomplete scales. Hence, any new finding of
Paleozoic sarcopterygians in South America is relevant to the understanding of ancient ichthyofaunas
diversity and ecosystems. Here we report material from the Carboniferous–Permian of the Del Salto,
Tres Saltos and/or Pituil formations, San Juan Province, and Pampa de Tepuel and Mojón de Hierro
formations in Chubut Province, Argentina. Part of the specimens –those from San Juan Province–
were previously reported but never studied in detail. The reported material is relatively well-
preserved and consists mainly of isolated completely preserved scales and a few isolated and
unidentified dermal bones. Scale morphologies vary from rounded to ovoid; most have the exposed
(posterior) field ornamented with several closely packed and elongated coarse ridges that seem to be
coated with enamel, occasionally coarse tubercles are also present. The unexposed (anterior) field
bears parallel and concentric growth lines. Scale sizes vary ca. 1 to 2.5 cm in length. The
ornamentation pattern observed on the scales is consistent with those present in many coelacanths
––which is uniformly maintained from the Paleozoic to Recent. Thus, the scale material is interpreted
as belonging to coelacanth (Sarcopterygii, Actinistia) fishes. Early coelacanth material is rare in South
America and generally poorly preserved; thus, scale descriptions of many Paleozoic South American
taxa seem to be incomplete, dealing mostly with external morphology and most of the studied
specimens lack paleohistological information. The material found in Argentina would provide an
additional source for comparative paleohistological studies. Through this study, we report a broader
distribution of coelacanths involving the centro-western and southwestern of Argentina. The material
reported is among the oldest actinistians from South America. Detailed anatomical and
paleohistological studies of the material are necessary to improve description, further comparisons
and its paleobiogeographical implications.

Morphological characters from mylodontine dermal ossicles were considered as bearing taxonomic
utility, but shape variability of ossicles within individuals makes this goal difficult. Regional variability
in dermal ossicle arrangement in Mylodon Patagonian mummified hides suggests some related
regional variability in ossicle morphology; assessing this possibility bears importance for their
taxonomic use. Most studies of Mylodon dermal ossicles come from Patagonian mummified skin
remains, which reveal their relative position and relationships with soft tissues, but hinders
superficial assessment of large ossicle samples. Furthermore, the lack of connection of these hides
with other bones precludes recognizing the body region to which they correspond. In order to
contribute to the knowledge of the less studied dermal ossicles of Pampean Mylodon specimens, and
to contribute in the solution of some aforementioned problems, here we describe a large collection of
ossicles belonging to a single articulated Pampean specimen of Mylodon darwinii, CORD-PZ 4570. The
material comes from the Late Pleistocene near Anisacate, Córdoba Province, housed at the Museo de
Paleontología, Universidad Nacional de Córdoba. It is appropriate to answer some of the
aforementioned questions, because the ossicles are in contact with many bones, including lower jaw,
ribs, humerus, ulna, radius, many carpals and metacarpals, femur, fibula, navicular, metatarsal IV, and
phalanges of pedal digit IV. Contrasting with some generalizations on the condition of Mylodon
darwinii in previous descriptions, the ossicles of CORD-PZ are no flatter or larger than in Glossotherium
robustum. Although variability within the same region was high, some clear differences are present
between most ossicles in some regions. Dermal ossicles associated to thoracic ribs are mostly
relatively large (approx. 14 mm), globose, and provided with fosettes. Ossicles associated with the
palmar surface of the manus are generally smaller, but some are larger than those associated with
ribs. They are not globose and some are flat. Many small, flattened ossicles are present near the
greater trochanter of the femur. This suggests a widespread distribution of dermal ossicles on the
corporal surface, and their general morphological variability between different regions of the body
surface, as previously hypothesized for Glossotherium robustum by nineteenth century authors. This
supports the inference that the most recent hypothetical common ancestor of Mylodon and
Glossotherium had regional variability in ossicle morphology, and parsimony suggests that other
mylodontine taxa with ossicles likely presented the same condition. These hypotheses can be tested
with further study of articulated mylodontines.

(39 taxones x 92 caracteres dentarios, craneanos y postcraneanos, 9 caracteres continuos)
Epitherium laternarium, Neolicaphrium recens y Uruguayodon alius).

The remains presented here correspond to an avian left tarsometatarsus (field number CCS-5)
recovered from Bajo de la Carpa Formation (Santonian, Upper Cretaceous), of Paso Córdoba locality,
southwest of General Roca, Río Negro, Argentina. This element is 49.2 mm long, with incomplete
proximal and distal ends, and 10.4 mm midshaft width. The metatarsals (mtt) II to IV are fused
through its length, with shallow grooves between adjacent metatarsals on their proximal halves, and
even shallower ones along their distal halves. This condition is similar to Patagopteryx deferrariisi, but
the opposite is seen in Kaririavis mater and Neuquenornis volans, with metatarsals almost fused
proximally and unfused distally. The three metatarsals are similar in width, where the IIIrd is 1.18
times the metatarsal IV. This condition differs from Patagopteryx that has a proportionately narrow
metatarsal IV (mtt III/mtt IV width ratio = ca. 1.73) and Kaririavis with a wider metatarsal III (mtt III/
mtt IV width ratio = ca. 2). The proximal vascular foramen is present between metatarsals III and IV,
and opens on the anterior and plantar surfaces, a condition shared with Patagopteryx, but absent in
Kaririavis. The presence of a distal vascular foramen between the trochlea of metatarsals III and IV
cannot be determined because the trochlea of metatarsal IV has not been preserved. No articular
surface for metatarsal I is recognized on the metatarsal II, nor a swelling on the anterior surface of
metatarsals II and III for the attachment of the M. tibialis anterior. The plantar surface is somewhat
excavated on the proximal half, being shallower than in Patagopteryx (MACN-N-11) and Neuquenornis
(MUCPv-142). A preliminary phylogenetic analysis of Avialae recovers Kaririavis as the basal most
Ornithuromorpha and CCS-5 nested in a large polytomy within this clade also including Patagopteryx.
This polytomy is probably due to the single remain of CCS-5 and the combination of plesiomorphic
(e.g., trochlea of metatarsal II not medially curved) and apomorphic (e.g., metatarsal fusion)
characters that it presents. Several characters shared with Patagopteryx suggest it could represent a
new specimen of this taxon; however, a more exhaustive phylogenetic analysis is needed. In any case,
CCS-5 increases knowledge about vertebrates from Bajo de la Carpa Formation at Paso Córdoba
locality, where it is also known Velocisaurus, Achillesaurus, Notosuchus, Comahuesuchus, and Dinilysia,
and tending to the fossil fauna diversity represented in the same levels of Neuquén city localities.

There is a big problem studying anatomy in mastozoology and mammal paleontology: we don't have
a common anatomical language. Due to the scope of the standardized veterinary and medical
nomenclatures, they fall short for the descriptions done and used by evolutionary biologists. The
“classical” non standardized names in use are not one nomenclature but a plethora of living dialects
that, like all living languages, are growing, branching, and worst of all, they are ambiguous. There are
terms going around used for more than one structure. For example, crista obliqua, hipolophid,
astragalar canal. These terms are usually used without awareness of their ambiguity, as being
proficient in more than one nomenclature is a task we are usually not trained for. The writer says one
thing but the readers understand a different thing. We are so unconscious of this ambigüity that more
than one work uses several names of the same anatomical accident independently not only in
descriptions but in absent/present characters. The following states of those characters are not equal,
which, without any reference or graphical descriptions, makes it a mystery what the authors are
referring to. This implies that ideal epistemic situations allowing intersubjectivity are not met.
Intersubjectivity, that is a shared assessment, among other things depends on a rigorous use of
language. This can be achieved by standardized nomenclatures but not only on them. We want to
propose a solution for the individual research in the short run. In a nutshell, my solution has two
sides: a methodological one and another epistemological. The methodological part is based on many
considerations about the scientific language and its relevance for the most successful communication
among researchers. This methodology is already in use in some works, particularly about teeth. It
includes annotated graphics of all terms, characters and character states, or at least a reference to
them. Orientation used must be clarified and unified through the text. Adjectives particularly need to
be explicitly defined because they are arbitrary cuts of a continuum. These graphics and references
are needed in order for our research to follow FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interchangeable,
Reusable). These principles, made to enhance data reuse, summarize the epistemological discussion
on the problems of rigorous communication. In this sense, these principles play as the ideal
epistemological situations that guarantee intersubjectivity.

An undetermined astragalus (MLP 12-1871) from “Santacrucense” layers of Santa Cruz river (Santa
Cruz, Argentina) was found among interatheriid Notoungulata remains of the vertebrate paleontology
collection. It is 7.69 mm long and 4.87 mm in trochlear width; body mass was estimated at 699.2 gr
using trochlear width. It is not a notoungulate but showed similarities to some caviomorph rodents.
This astragalus exhibits more specialized cursorial or saltatorial adaptations than notoungulates. As
most notoungulates, the neck displays a dorsal oblique ridge, reminiscent of the nuchal crest of
notoungulates and probably the reason that this specimen was grouped with them. This crest also
appears in some Chinchillidae rodents such as Lagidium. Conversely, it could represent the anterior
border of the digital fossa, absent in notoungulates but present in chinchillids. The dorsal surface is
eroded well to the middle of the trochlea, obscuring its anatomy. The head is almost flat,
transversally wide, similar to Lagidium and Chinchilla, with dorsal and medial plantar projections. The
latter is larger, forming a distinct facet for the medial tarsal. There is a lateroplantar anterior facet for
the calcaneus. Neck length is a third of total length and as wide as the head. Neck angle and length
are as in Chinchilla, shorter than in Lagidium. The sustentacular facet is rhomboid, smaller than the
ectal facet and continuous with the anterior facet for the calcaneus. The ectal facet is deeply concave
and rectangular, similar to Lagostomus. Space for the sinus tarsi is small and narrow, formed almost
exclusively by the astragalar sulcus. In distal view, the trochlear ridges are parallel and have the same
height, with the lateral ridge being wider transversally. Trochlear proportions are as in Lagidium, but
the lateral process is more expanded, as wide as the lateral ridge, trapezoidal, at a sharp angle (appr.
55º) to the trochlea. It is mostly occupied by the lateral malleolar facet with a very small surface for
ligaments. Medial malleolar facet is thin and follows the shape of the ridge. Tuberosity for the deltoid
ligament is small and plantarly projected, not distinguishable from a medial tubercle. There is no
distinct flexor groove or lateral tubercle. Except for the wide ectal facet, the general anatomy is
reminiscent of Lagidium viscacia. The only chinchillids reported for Santa Cruz Formation are
Prolagostomus, whose postcranium lacks tarsus, and Pliolagostomus, with no known postcranium.
Thus, the record of a possible chinchillid astragalus is relevant for the knowledge of early Miocene
caviomorphs.

Glyptodontidae (Xenarthra, Cingulata) is a particular group of large armored herbivores from the
Cenozoic of South America, characterized by the presence of a cephalic shield, rigid dorsal carapace
and caudal armor. Among them, Glyptodon Owen, 1839 stands out by the presence of some particular
exosqueletal features, including isolated dermal ossicles and "spine"-like osteoderms along the
carapace margin. In recent years, the microstructure of Glyptodontidae osteoderms has been
analyzed with the aim of finding new characters of systematic value. However, these studies have
been focused on the dorsal carapace but other structures, such as the cephalic shield, have received
little attention. In the present contribution we analyze the microstructure of the dermal structures
that composed the cephalic shield of Glyptodon reticulatus Owen from Late Pleistocene of Argentina
(MAMM-PV-048, CTES-PV-7590) in order to define its histogenesis and possible function. From a
macroscopic viewpoint, the components of the cephalic shield of Glyptodon are polygonal with rough
surface and variable size. Also, the thickness decreases from the central area to the margins of the
cephalic shield. Sutures between adjacent elements are lax so that they are not closely attached,
contrary to those of other glyptodonts, like Neosclerocalyptus and Panochthus. Within the cephalic
shield of Glyptodon, the dermal structures of the central area have better defined articular surfaces
than those of the peripheric area, having a well defined central figure surrounded by a flat area with
some piliferous foramina. The inner surface is characterized by a meshwork of structural fibers
macroscopically visible, and several small neurovascular foramina, unlike carapace osteoderms in
which there is one large foramen surrounded several small foramina. Unlike the osteoderms of the
dorsal carapace, characterized by a diploe structure and marked extensive secondary reconstruction,
the dermal bones that composed the cephalic shield are compact, composed of primary tissue, with a
matrix consisting mainly of mineralized fiber packings, few primary osteons and some resorption
spaces delimited by lamellar tissue, similar to the dermal ossicles present in this genus. Five lines of
arrested growth arranged parallel to the surface are observed. The histological characteristics
described allow us to interpret a metaplastic origin, like that of the dermal ossicles which are very
similar. The compactness degree of the cephalic shield is similar to that of the dermal ossicles,
osteoderms of the postero-lateral margin and caudal edge of the dorsal carapace and caudal armor,
for which a hypothetical defensive function is inferred.

According to our revision, the only middle ear bone described for glyptodonts is the stapes of
Glyptodon Owen, Panochthus Burmeister and “Sclerocalyptus” Ameghino briefly described and
illustrated by Guth C. in 1957. The aim of this study is to describe the stapes of the glyptodont
Propalaehoplophorus Ameghino (YPM PU 15007), from the early Miocene Santa Cruz Formation of
Patagonia (Argentina). We observed the middle ear structures using micro-computed tomography,
and subsequent three-dimensional reconstructions, made using Avizo 7.1. The description is based
on the right stapes, the only one preserved. The stapes appears anatomically rotated, with the head
distally and the plate medially. It is typically bicrurate. The oval head is robust, with a well-developed
muscular process, and tapers to form a long, flat neck region. Between neck and footplate, the
stapedial crura diverges to surround a sizeable intercrural foramen. Both stapedial crura are
constituted by thick bone, thinner than the head and footplate. The anterior crus is slimmer at its
middle region than the posterior one, but it seems to be an artifact due to preservation. Both crura
are long, almost equally wide all along and inserted near the border of the footplate, delimiting a
triangular intercrural foramen. The footplate is oval and relatively thick, thinner posteriorly. Glyptodon
stapes has an elongated shape, an oval intercrural foramen, and a reduced footplate, meanwhile in
Propalaehoplophorus are both the stapes and the intracrural foramen triangular in shape, and an
evident footplate. Panochthus and “Sclerocalyptus” present a not-perforated stapedes, with their crura
joined along their entire length. Some similarities between stapedes of Propalaehoplophorus and
extant armadillos includes a similar overall triangular shape with the narrow oval head forming a long
and flat distinguishable neck, and the stapedial crura diverging to delimit a sizeable foramen. This
preliminary finding provides a basis for future anatomical and functional studies on auditory abilities
in the santacrucian glyptodonts, which will allow to establish patterns of hearing evolution across the
Cingulata.

Ursidae, Gomphotheriidae, Camelidae, Cervidae, Equidae y Tayassuidae.

Meiolaniids were giant, terrestrial turtles that lived in the Eocene of Patagonia, Argentina, and from
the Eocene to the Pleistocene of Australia. They were characterized by the presence of frills and
horns in the skull and tails covered by rings ending in a tail club. Niolamia argentina is one of the two
named meiolaniids from Patagonia. It is known by an almost complete skull, lower jaw, tail ring, both
scapulae, and carapace fragments. In the present study, a finite element analysis (FEA) was
performed on the skull of Niolamia argentina to assess the cranial performance simulating defensive/
aggressive movements and to explore the possible function of frills and horns in the skull. FEA
calculates the stress and deformation exhibited in a digitally generated structure, in response to the
loads applied to it. Skull virtual model of N. argentina was reconstructed based on CT scans and the
analysis was performed using published data on homogeneous crocodile bone properties (Young´s
modulus: 20.49 GPa; Poisson ratio: 0.4; Bone density: 1.77 g/mL). Five different scenarios were
tested applying a strong load: (1) snout hitting (as observed in extant tortoises), (2) hitting with the
forehead, (3) struggling with the notch between the frill and the horn, (4) stabbing with lateral horns
and (5) caudal torsion of the frills. Scenarios (1), (2), and (3) represent the least stressful, while (4) and
(5) represent the most damaging, especially the caudal torsion of the frills. The observed results
imply that if two aggressive males engage in combat, hitting each other with the caudal frills may
represent a dangerous scenario, while trying to stab each other should be safe unless horns get stuck
in the carapace of the rival. With these preliminary results, we can hypothesize that the presence of
frills and horns in N. argentina seem to be more suitable for sexual display than to combat behavior.

dos dientes; Chelonoidis sp. (Testudines, Cryptodira, Testudinidae), una placa nucal fragmentaria;
Chelidae indet.
e izquierdos, un fragmento distal de fémur izquierdo y un calcáneo derecho (sin la tuberosidad);
Mylodontidae indet.

Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, Paris, Francia (MNHN 1616, 1617, 1618 y 1623).

Since the first discovery of a turtle fragment on the Baal site in 2015, many new fossil turtles have
been collected. To this day, 11 almost complete shells including carapace and plastron (MUCPv 1469,
1470, 1471, 1472, 1473, 1474, 1484, 2024, 2169, 2175, 2214) and three fragmentary specimens
(MUCPv 2026, 2186, 2215) have been found on Upper Cretaceous rocks from Portezuelo Formation.
This paleontological site is located on the north coast of Barreales Lake, 90 km northwest from
Neuquén city, near Proyecto Dino Geo-Paleontological Park. All specimens were found in the same
restricted area (400m2) and were associated with other vertebrates including Titanosaurid material
(like Futalognkosaurus dukei and Baalsaurus mansillai). More material was found 200 meters away
from the site, including turtle scales, the crocodile Patagosuchus, theropods Megaraptor and
Pamparaptor, and more Titanosaurid material. Portezuelo Formation is represented in outcrops from
Sierra del Portezuelo and Barreales Lake. Both sites are separated by 80 kilometers; however, they
present similar fauna. The record of Pleurodira on Portezuelo Formation at Sierra del Portezuelo is
represented by Portezueloemys patagonica and Prochelidella portezuelae. Barreales Lake specimens
include both juvenile and mature turtles; the presence of a pentagonal anteroposteriorly elongated
mesoplastron similar to the one described in Portezueloemys indicates that they belong to the
suborder Pleurodira and the Pelomedusoides hyperfamily. On adult specimens all scales can be
recognized, including cervical, vertebral, costal, etc. The hyoplastron is sub-pentagonal and differs
from the one observed in Linderochelys, which is more quadrangular. The first neural is sub-
quadrangular and is followed by hexagonal neurals like the ones described for Portezueloemys and
Prochelidella. The lateral border is upwardly curled and rounded from peripheral 2 to 6 like the one
described for Prochelidella. The costals and vertebral scute 1 do not overlap the peripherals like the
scutes in Prochelidella. The pectoroabdominal sulcus does not cross the pentagonal mesoplastron.
The entoplastron is diamond shaped as in Portezueloemys. As for now and through a preliminary
report, we think that the material from Barreales Lake is closely related to Portezueloemys, ongoing
studies will confirm that.

Abelisaurids represent the best known clade of theropod dinosaurs for the Upper Cretaceous of
Gondwana. In the last decades, the increase of abelisaurid records has been allowed to have a better
knowledge about the morphological diversity within the clade. Cerro Overo and La Invernada are two
contiguous zones that make up a single fossiliferous area where continental sediments of Santonian
age outcrop (Fm. Bajo de la Carpa). To date, seven abelisaurids specimenens were recovered from this
area, including Viavenator and Llukalkan. In this communication we describe a well preserved proximal
end of an abelisaurid left fibula (MAU-Pv-LI-685) from La Invernada fossil site. In proximal view it has
a concave medial margin and a lateral convex margin, although the posterior end is not tapered as in
other abelisaurids (e.g., Aucasaurus, Majungasaurus, Viavenator, Xenotarsaurus), so it almost does not
differ in size with respect to the anterior end. Therefore, MAU-PV-LI-685 does not present the typical
coma shape, being more similar to a parenthesis, as in the fibule of other abelisaurid coming from
Cerro Overo fossil site (MAU-Pv-CO-661). In medial view it can be observed that the fibular fossa has
an ovoid form and is present on the most posterior and distal sector, similar to that of Viavenator
(other abelisaurid from La Invernada site) and different to MAU-Pv-CO-661 in which the fibular fossa
is more expanded, occupying a more anterior and proximal sector. Inside the fibular fossa is observed
an incomplete septum, perpendicular to the dorsal border of the fossa. An elevated rim with a rough
surface delimits the fibular fossa and an anterodorsal depression. This characteristic is not present in
other abelisaurids, so it could represent an autapomorphy of a new species. Finally, the dorsal margin
is slightly concave, in lateral view, with a small elevation in the posterior part, as in Viavenator,
whereas in MAU-Pv-CO-661 the dorsal concavity is more marked. This new material presents
morphological features that differentiates it from others abelisaurids found in the Cerro Overo-La
Invernada area, which increase the abundance and diversity that has been recorded in this area for
the abelisaurids. This type of morphological variation within the same clade and in a limited temporal
and geographical space could correspond not only to an evolutionary type of variation, but perhaps to
an ontogenetic issue. Quantitative approaches such as geometric morphometry added to statistical
analysis could help to understand these morphological variations from other perspectives.

The study of osteological paleopathologies might disclose information about behaviors, physiology
and interspecific and intraspecific interactions in extinct animals. In the last years paleopathological
studies has been increased, this allowed disclose new information related to different styles of life in
this type of reptiles. In the particular case of theropods, the pathological records are mainly related to
the predatory lifestyle, where most of the injuries were located in the axial post-skeleton (ribs and
vertebrae) and hindlimbs. In this communication we present a possible paleopathology in a right Mt II
(MCNA-PV-5123, in an excellent state of conservation) of a megaraptorid theropod (composed of
several manual and pedal phalanges, and six metatarsals) from Cañadón Amarillo fossil site in
southern Mendoza (Santonia, Bajo de la Carpa Formation?). On the posterior surface of the distal half
of diaphysis an ellipsoidal area with rough texture is observed, together with a zone where the bone
tissue collapse and a marked distal flange, it might indicate the presence of callus tissue product of a
healing process. In this area, the diaphysis is thicker than the left Mt II (MCNA-PV-5120), which looks
"healthy" despite its poor state of preservation. The total length in MCNA-PV-5123 is 307 mm, in
contrast to 336 mm of MCNA-PV-5120, showing a notorious shortening. This type of metatarsal
shortening and the formation of the callus has been documented in other theropods as Albertosaurus
and Allosaurus. The abnormal presence of callus tissue and the zone where the bone tissue collapse
might indicate a possible impact fracture. This type of injuries located in the hindlimbs has been
related to a predatory lifestyle and the prey processing, since they are moments in which blows and
shocks occur. These types of studies will improve knowledge about the paleobiology of this group of
large predatory dinosaurs.

The Upper Cretaceous in Uruguay does not exceed 200 m in total thickness. It includes from base to
top the Guichón, Mercedes and Asencio formations (and its lateral equivalent, the Queguay
Formation). In 2006, the most complete sauropod from Uruguay was described from the Guichón
Formation (early Late Cretaceous). The material included sixty caudal vertebrae (all of them strongly
procoelous, except for the first one, which is biconvex), a partial coracoid, long bone fragments (distal
tibia, proximal fibula), metatarsals, astragali and possible osteoderms, as well as associated egg shell
fragments. A phylogenetic analysis was performed to assess the relationships of the Uruguayan
taxon. Despite the large number of most parsimonious trees retrieved, it was recovered as a stem-
saltasaurid (i.e., a titanosaurian closer to Saltasauridae than Colossosauria). As suggested (but not
tested) in the original publication the Uruguayan taxon was retrieved in a clade that includes
Trigonosaurus and titanosaurs which share a biconvex first caudal vertebra including Alamosaurus,
Baurutitan and Pellegrinisaurus, all of them from Late Cretaceous units. The Uruguayan titanosaur
shows a combination of synapomorphies (biconvex first caudal centrum, pneumatic foramina in the
anterior most caudal centra, dorsal tuberosities on the transverse processes in anterior caudal
centra, well developed fibular knot, pyramidal astragalus). Furthermore, a potential autapomorphy
was identified: hexagonal contour of the condyle in middle caudal centra, suggesting it is a new genus
and species. This contribution demonstrates that at least two lineages of titanosaurian sauropods
were present in the Late Cretaceous of Uruguay, the second being the Aeolosaurini recently
recognized in the younger Asencio Formation.

Mar Chiquita, Buenos Aires).

agrietamiento, bioerosión, organismos colonizadores, roca sedimentaria hospedante y precipitados
Smilodon, Felidae indet., Arctotherium, “Pinnipedia” indet., Ctenomys, Lagostomus, Hydrochoeridae
indet., Dolichotinae indet., Caviidae indet., Caviomorpha indet., Eutatus, Tolypeutes, Pampatherium,
Lomaphorus, Neosclerocalyptus, Glyptodon, Doedicurus, Panochthus, Neuryurus, Megatherium,
Glossotherium, Lestodon, Scelidotherium, Macrauchenia, Toxodon, Stegomastodon, Hippidion, Equus
(Amerhippus), Tayassuidae indet., Lama., Camelidae indet., Epieuryceros, Morenelaphus, Antifer.

MULTI-PROXY ANALYSIS OF THE ENIGMATIC SITE ARENAS BLANCAS (BUENOS AIRES PROVINCE,
ARGENTINA) AND ITS REPERCUSSION ON THE PAMPEAN BIOSTRATIGRAPHY
Arenas Blancas is a poorly known site located in the lower reach of the Chasicó creek (Buenos Aires Province,
Argentina), with great relevance from a biostratigraphic viewpoint. The Macrochorobates scalabrinii Biozone was
defined from this site, proposed as the biostratigraphic basis of the early Huayquerian Stage/Age, late Miocene.
However, the geological context and faunal record of this site were never studied in detail. Now, we perform a
multi-proxy analysis of the Arenas Blancas site, as well as a nearby site so-called Curva de la Vaca (without fossils),
and provide new interpretations on their origin, age, and biostratigraphy. Sedimentological, stratigraphic, and
geomorphological characteristics of both sites suggest that the sequences include fluvial/alluvial deposits that
represent Quaternary terraces; it is highlighted that, at the moment, no Quaternary fossils were founded in these
sites. The taxonomic analysis of the Arenas Blancas faunal assemblage reveals 14 mammal taxa, together with
some fishes, reptiles, and birds. This assemblage is correlated with the fauna from the Cerro Azul Formation
assigned to the Chasicoan Stage/Age (late Miocene), also recovered from the lower reach of the Chasicó creek.
Some mammals are abundant (e.g. Chasicotatus ameghinoi, Vetelia perforata, Typotheriopsis chasicoensis) and one
taxon (Cardiatherium chasicoense) is considered as typical of the Chasicoan Stage/Age in the Pampean region. The
taphonomic evaluation indicates that the assemblage is constituted by reworked specimens. It is proposed that
fluvio/alluvial events, occurred during the late Pleistocene-Holocene, eroded the upper Miocene substrate and
reworked fossil remains, which results in a significant temporal difference between the sedimentation of the
deposits and the fossil content of Arenas Blancas site. The updating data on the taxa used to characterize the
Macrochorobates scalabrinii Biozone (including this species) show their low biostratigraphic value, considering their
taxonomic status and/or temporal distribution. The available geological and paleontological evidence leads to reject
this biozone as a valid biostratigraphic unit. This type of comprehensive study, involving multiple lines of evidence, is
of great interest and necessary to make integral evaluations of the vertebrate assemblages preserved in fluvial
environments. Particularly, the identification of reworking, a common process in different fluvial/alluvial systems, is
essential when biochronological and/or biostratigraphic interpretations are proposed.

Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio, el Museo La Plata y American Museum of Natural History),
largo; dientes de raíz larga y corona cónica anteriormente y levemente comprimida posteriormente;
periótico con apertura del acueducto coclear reniforme, proceso anterior corto y posterior alargado;

Corto, La Cueva y Cañadón Jack Harvey.
Edad Santacrucense (e.g., Proeutatus oenophorus, Stenotatus patagonicus, Prozaedyus proximus y
Cochlops muricatus (Cingulata); Adinotherium ovinum y Nesodon imbricatus (Toxodontia), Protypotherium
australe (Typotheria), Diadiaphorus majusculus (Litopterna), Neoreomys australis, Eocardia montana,
Acarechimys minutissimus, Perimys spp. Spaniomys spp. (Caviomorpha). Las aves identificadas incluyen
a cf. Opisthodactylus patagonicus (Rheidae), Psilopterus lemoinei (Phorusrhacidae) y cf. Thegornis
musculosus (Falconidae).
Colloncurense).
