The primary environmental risks associated with the operations of Industria Productora De Calzados Mantaro E.I.R.L include contamination from air and water pollution, noise pollution from industrial processes, and an increase in industrial waste within the zone . There is a risk of earthquakes due to the region's history of seismic activity, which poses a threat to infrastructure . Poor waste management can exacerbate issues such as contamination, and the clayey compact soils of the area may also influence drainage and waste containment . These factors collectively highlight the need for robust environmental management practices to mitigate the industry's impact on the surrounding environment.

Huancayo's geological history contributes to its current economic activities by providing natural resources, such as clayey and compact soils suitable for manufacturing processes like those found in the footwear industry, prominently operated by Industria Productora De Calzados Mantaro E.I.R.L . The terrain, characterized by the ancient 'Puna' plain, facilitates infrastructure development for industrial activities . Additionally, the occurrence of moderate to strong earthquakes points to a need for constructing resilient manufacturing facilities that can withstand seismic activities, thereby influencing construction techniques and material choices . These geological conditions have facilitated industrial activities, particularly manufacturing, which capitalize on the local resources and adapt to the seismic risks.

Huancayo’s environmental vulnerabilities imply significant challenges for urban planning and development, especially in mitigating the risks posed by seismic activities, pollution, and waste management. Given the region's history of earthquakes, urban planners must integrate earthquake-resistant designs and materials in infrastructure development to safeguard communities and economic activities . Air and water pollution from industrial activities necessitate the implementation of robust waste management and environmental regulation policies to protect local ecosystems and public health . Efficient drainage and waste containment systems must be designed taking into account the area's clayey soils, which influence water saturation and stability . Consequently, comprehensive urban planning strategies must harmonize economic growth with sustainable environmental practices to enhance resilience against these vulnerabilities.

The combination of clayey, compact soils and the geological features in Huancayo significantly influences the construction and durability of industrial buildings. Clayey soils, while compact, present challenges in water drainage, potentially leading to foundation instability if not properly managed . The ancient miocene-pliocene 'Puna' plain suggests a relatively stable and elevated terrain, which is advantageous for constructing durable infrastructure. However, the area's seismic history, marked by 7 earthquakes between 1900 and 2019, necessitates that buildings are designed with seismic resilience in mind, using materials and techniques that absorb seismic shocks . Ultimately, these geological and soil characteristics require careful engineering considerations to ensure structural integrity and longevity of industrial buildings.

Public entities play a crucial role in managing industrial impacts in Huancayo by regulating and overseeing environmental and public health standards. Entities such as the Ministry of Production influence industrial practices by setting quality standards for materials, which can help mitigate environmental impacts from industries like the footwear sector . Initiatives like the Proyecto Produce contribute to sustainable industrial growth through development programs and compliance monitoring, ensuring industries operate within environmental safety margins . Public entities thus help balance industrial activity with environmental sustainability, driving policies that mitigate the adverse effects of industrial operations on the community and environment.

The transportation of hazardous materials in Huancayo represents a significant risk due to the potential for accidents or leaks that could lead to widespread environmental contamination and health hazards. The region's geological vulnerabilities, including frequent seismic activity, heighten the risk of accidents during transportation, as tremors could destabilize roads and lead to spills . Additionally, inadequate infrastructure, such as roads not designed to handle hazardous loads, amplifies the potential for accidents. The negative impact could extend to water contamination and soil pollution, severely affecting local ecosystems and posing health risks to inhabitants. Therefore, stringent regulatory measures and careful planning of transportation routes are essential to mitigate these risks effectively.

The Huancayo area's vulnerability to seismic events is significantly influenced by its geophysical characteristics. The region's geology includes a history of multiple earthquakes, with 7 events recorded between 1900 and 2019, including two strong events. The last strong earthquake (central Peru, 1 October 1969) had a magnitude of 6.6 and caused damage to moderately constructed structures in populated areas . The ongoing geological seismic activity suggests a continued risk to infrastructure, especially poorly constructed buildings that are more susceptible to damage from moderate (magnitude 5.0 – 5.9) earthquakes, which occurred three times in recent years . Additionally, the area's persistent ancient surface, known as 'Puna,' with alignments between 3,800 and 4,400 meters, reflects a geologically dynamic environment which may exacerbate the impact of seismic activities .

To improve environmental management practices, Industria Productora De Calzados Mantaro E.I.R.L might implement strategies such as adopting cleaner production technologies to reduce emissions and waste, thereby minimizing air and water pollution impacts . Establishing comprehensive waste management systems can effectively segregate and treat industrial waste, which mitigates the risk of environmental contamination. Regular environmental audits and compliance with national and international environmental standards can ensure continuous improvement and adherence to best practices . Engaging in community awareness programs on sustainable practices can enhance public cooperation and maintain transparency in environmental responsibilities, fostering a more sustainable industrial operation overall.

Regional climatic conditions in Huancayo, including variations in temperature and precipitation, have profound effects on agricultural activities, which in turn influence industrial processes like tanning and footwear production. Consistent climatic patterns benefit agricultural yield, thereby ensuring a steady supply of raw materials such as leather for tanning . Extreme climatic events can disrupt supply chains, affecting the availability of key raw materials required for production processes . Furthermore, climatic conditions must be adapted to suit specific processing requirements in industries to maintain quality and efficiency. Rain and humidity can affect the curing time and quality of leather, underscoring a need for controlled environments within industrial processes to ensure consistent product quality.

Past meteorological phenomena in Huancayo have likely affected industrial processes by influencing operational efficiency and safety protocols. Variations in temperature and precipitation can impact machinery operation and material conditions, especially in the footwear industry, which relies on specific environmental conditions for material curing and processing . Extreme weather events may disrupt supply chains and transportation, affecting the movement of raw materials and finished goods. Additionally, past meteorological events recorded in the area may have necessitated adaptations in production schedules and building infrastructure to withstand adverse weather conditions . Such adaptations ensure continuity in production despite environmental challenges.
