LAS MANTARRAYAS
CARACTERISTICAS:
MANTA RAYS
CHARACTERISTICS:
It is a giant cartilaginous fish known for its large size, graceful movement, and
peaceful behavior. It is characterized by its flat, diamond-shaped body, wide mouth,
and other features. Unlike other rays, manta rays do not have a poisonous stinger
and can live up to 40 to 50 years. Manta rays are highly intelligent, capable of leaping
out of the water, and have a cartilage skeleton and a very large brain.
HABITAT:
Manta rays inhabit tropical, subtropical, and temperate oceans around the world,
mainly in latitudes near the equator, as they prefer temperatures around 20 degrees
Celsius. These animals are found both offshore, in oceanic waters, and near the
coast in areas rich in plankton, such as coral reefs.
SKILLS:
Manta rays possess a great memory and sense of direction, allowing them to
navigate billions of kilometers and visit specific locations on coral reefs to clean
themselves. They can also recognize themselves in their mirrors as various animals,
filter-feed on plankton, and perform leaps out of the water.
HISTORY:
Manta rays are closely linked to the evolution of rays, with the first manta rays
appearing approximately 20 million years ago and evolving into their current forms
about 5 million years ago.
Until 2017, giant oceanic manta rays belonged to the genus Manta. Their DNA
showed a relationship with rays of the genus "Mobula" and they were classified as
Mobula biros tris.
FUN FACTS:
Did you know...? Manta rays are "ovoviviparous," meaning they develop their young
inside their eggs. In addition, each manta ray's skin has a unique pattern of spots
and coloration, similar to human fingerprints
Another interesting fact is that they are close relatives of sharks.
