¡Bienvenidos a Español 204! Esperamos despertar tu interés por la palabra escrita, el poder del
bolígrafo y la belleza de la escritura a través de la literatura y el cine. Este curso fue diseñado

para aumentar tu talento en el arte de la escritura y tu confianza en las habilidades de
comunicarte por escrito. En este curso vas a dedicarte a la exploración de varios temas,
desarrollados en películas y varios tipos de literatura. Te invitamos a explorar el mundo hispano,
mientras desarrollas tu capacidad de escribir en castellano.
Las películas en Intrigas, 3ra ed. son bien conocidas y es posible que puedan
encontrar algunas en Netflix, Vimeo, YouTube, etc. Por ejemplo, la película
“El hijo de la novia” está disponible en YouTube con enlace en Canvas y en
Love Library: PN1997 .H556 2002.
Al final del curso, Uds. van a ver una de estas películas, según la selección de cada instructor/a, y
hacer una reseña crítica para su composición final. Una buena posibilidad para crédito extra
sería mirar y analizar otras películas de esta lista*:

El secreto de tener éxito en este curso es cumplir con “Los siete pasos al éxito”:

material. Si pierdes una sesión de clase, a ti te toca la responsabilidad de ponerte al día.
2. LLEGAR A TIEMPO para la clase. Si encuentras la puerta cerrada ya, es que has llegado
tarde.
3. PARTICIPAR ACTIVAMENTE EN TODAS LAS ACTIVIDADES. La participación
importa en este curso y la clave para una buena participación es el estar preparado. Lee el
material antes de venir a clase y haz todos los ejercicios asignados.

4. HABLA Y ESCRIBE EN ESPAÑOL. Usamos la “lengua meta” (el español) en clase
durante este curso. El objetivo es ampliar hasta lo máximo las oportunidades para que tú y tus
compañeros tengan oportunidades para la interacción en español. No es para frustrar ni para
desanimar a nadie – todo lo contrario. No esperamos la perfección de los alumnos, sino el hacer
un buen esfuerzo todos los días.
5. RESPETA A TUS COMPAÑEROS DE CLASE Y ANÍMALES A QUE HABLEN MÁS.
Hace falta un ambiente cómodo en que todos tengan confianza y se sientan apoyados para que el
aprendizaje de un idioma se ponga en marcha. Conoce a los compañeros, memoriza sus nombres
y aprende de ellos. Organicen grupos de estudiar entre sí y anímense a aprender y practicar.
6. ESTUDIA POCO A POCO Y EN CONTEXTO. Para aprender a comunicarse en otra
lengua, hace falta el estudio frecuente, enfocado y contextualizado. No hay manera de abreviar el
proceso. Hay que estudiar con frecuencia y buscar oportunidades de practicar en contexto
siempre que sea posible. ¡Sí se puede!
7. BUSCA AYUDA LO MÁS TEMPRANO POSIBLE. Consulta con tu instructor/a y los
tutores en el laboratorio de lenguas ([Link] )
para repasar conceptos difíciles y aprender técnicas eficaces de estudiar. Siempre estamos
contentos de ayudar y cuanto más pronto inicies la conversación, cuanto mejor.
Objetivos del curso:
1. Expresarse por medio de la escritura, compartiendo opiniones, argumentando y
describiendo obras creativas de la literatura y de las películas.
2. Aplicar conscientemente y correctamente las formas gramaticales, con el
propósito de crear trabajos bien escritos.
3. Usar diferentes técnicas de escritura, incluyendo la descripción, la narración, el
resumen, la carta y el diálogo.
4. Mejorar sus habilidades de lectura, al explorar varios tipos de textos,
incluyendo cuentos, poemas y drama, por medio de la conversación y la escritura.
5. Prepararse para los cursos más avanzados, al escribir un ensayo literario
interpretativo, una reseña crítica, un informe literario, una descripción de un
personaje y una reseña de una película.
REQUISITOS DEL CURSO:
SPAN204 es un curso coordinado. Esto quiere decir que todas las secciones del curso tienen la
misma estructura básica y el mismo contenido. Usamos los mismos materiales básicos, seguimos
el mismo calendario, usamos el mismo esquema de distribución de las notas y tenemos la misma
política que gobierna el curso. Sin embargo, habrá diferencias en cómo se llevan a cabo las
clases día a día. Los instructores implementarán sus propias prácticas en el aula bajo su
discreción individual y responderán a los alumnos con la instrucción adaptada a cada sección.

1. Asistencia y participación – Este curso de Español 204 se reúne 2 veces por semana. El
trabajo en clase tiene que ser complementado con tareas en casa, especialmente la lectura
cuidadosa del texto asignado. La mayor parte del tiempo de clase se dedicará a la
discusión del texto en clase, que sirven como preparación para los trabajos
individuales/en grupo relacionados con la lectura y con la práctica de diferentes tipos de
escritura. La participación en clase es importantísima y supone más que la mera
asistencia. El/la estudiante debe llegar preparado a clase todos los días. Es imprescindible
que hayas repasado el texto antes de venir a clase. No se puede participar si no has leído
previamente la lectura asignada.
*Las ausencias perjudicarán seriamente la nota final del curso. Más de dos ausencias sin
justificación afectarán la calificación final. Una vez que se sobrepasa el límite, más
ausencias causarán un decremento de 1% por día hasta alcanzar el límite absoluto de
haber perdido el equivalente de 3 semanas de clase (6 ausencias en total). Si se sobrepasa
este límite (7 ausencias) el/la alumno/a suspenderá el curso de manera automática.
Las ausencias con excusa oficial (para eventos universitarios como los eventos deportivos
o artísticos, eventos para otros cursos, etc.) no contarán en el total. El/la alumno/a tiene
la responsabilidad de informar al/a la instructor/a con antelación y de presentar una
justificación oficial de la ausencia. Dos tardanzas se contarán como una ausencia.
COVID-19 advisory:

communication will ensure that absences due to illness will be taken into account. Cases
will be considered on an individual basis and should include proper medical

outside of the in-person classroom, or that an instructor is required to do so. In the event
that absences are accumulating and/or the student feels unable to learn the material, they

I, as the instructor of this class, respectfully request that you join me in wearing a face

If in-person classes are canceled, you will be notified of the instructional continuity plan
for this class by campus email and the announcement page in Canvas. For example, if
there is a snow day, you may be required to complete the Discussion forums for that day
and/or attend class through Zoom** via Canvas.
**Please note that the Zoom option is not available when in-person classes are held as
usual and that you are expected to be in class.
2. Ejercicios de VHL Central que acompaña el texto – El Calendario del Curso delimita
las materias con las que se trabajará cada día en la que se reúne la clase. El instructor
será responsable de comunicarles a los estudiantes las tareas específicas que hay que
preparar antes de venir a cada clase y la forma en que desea que éstas se preparen. Los
estudiantes son responsables de mantenerse informados en cuanto a las tareas exigidas
para cada clase. Los ejercicios de VHL Central ya están asignados y cada domingo es la
fecha límite para entregar dichas tareas.
3. Pruebas de gramática – Durante el curso habrá cinco pruebas. Para cada prueba, se
enfoca en un punto gramatical, con práctica en la clase además de los ejercicios de VHL
Central. También, a veces se enfocan en el vocabulario de las lecturas de la lección. Estas
pruebas se completarán en Canvas, fuera de las horas de clase. Los días dedicados a la
gramática también pueden enfocarse en errores comunes que se ven en los trabajos
escritos.
4. Taller de escritura – El/La profesora asignará tareas en clase, relacionadas con el texto
literario. Son breves trabajos escritos (200 - 300 palabras) que se harán en grupos de dos
o tres estudiantes. El instructor designará el tema de cada trabajo escrito, que podría ser
un pequeño ensayo, una carta, un diálogo, etc. Durante la clase, el grupo se reúne, charla
y organiza sus ideas para luego escribir un trabajo que refleja las contribuciones de todos
los miembros del grupo. La escritura de grupo no tiene reescritura, por lo tanto, los
miembros del grupo son responsables de revisar y corregir los errores de gramática antes
de entregar la versión final. La participación activa de todos los miembros del grupo es
fundamental para que el trabajo escrito tenga una buena nota. Cada persona en la
pareja/grupo tendrá la misma nota. Habrá 8 Talleres de Escritura.

5. Composiciones – Durante el curso, cada estudiante escribirá cinco composiciones,
utilizando el vocabulario, las lecturas y el resto del material de cada lección del libro. Las
composiciones son progresivas, comenzando por un mínimo de media página (250-300
palabras) y terminando por una extensión de tres páginas (650-700 palabras). Las
composiciones se entregarán escritas a máquina y se integrarán los puntos de gramática
que el/la estudiante va aprendiendo. Los instructores pueden aconsejar a los estudiantes
en la organización y el uso de la gramática de las composiciones, pero no corregirán la
composición completa antes de su entrega. Los temas de las composiciones son:
Un ensayo literario interpretativo (250-300 palabras)
Una reseña crítica de una obra literaria (350-400 palabras)
Un informe literario (450-500 palabras)
Una descripción de un personaje (550-600 palabras)
Una reseña crítica de una película (650-700 palabras)
Habrá un día de trabajo, designado en el calendario, en el cual los estudiantes pueden
organizar y empezar a escribir el trabajo. Se entregará un borrador de cada composición,
según la fecha indicada por cada instructor/a. Luego de recibir correcciones y sugerencias
de su instructor/a, los estudiantes completarán una revisión del ensayo. La fecha de
entrega será al juicio de cada instructor/a, según las necesidades de la clase. Para esta
fecha, entregarán una versión final junto con el borrador y la hoja de correcciones. La
versión final se evaluará tanto por el esmero de la escritura como por el haber
incorporado las sugerencias para mejorar el contenido y la organización.
6. Reflexión personal en el Foro– Este texto, con su película de cada lección y obras
literarias, tiene seis temas distintos: 1) el amor; 2) la política y el poder; 3) el conflicto y
los sentimientos; 4) la familia y la lealtad; 5) la identidad femenina y 6) la desigualdad
social y la moral. En el Foro de Discusión, al final de la lección, cada estudiante debe
reflexionar en el tema y relacionarlo a la película y/o a una/más obras literarias. Además
de escribir un párrafo sobre el tema, tiene que reaccionar a una de las entradas de sus
compañeros de clase.
Extra crédito: This semester we are offering a unique opportunity for extra credit: a voluntary
cultural exchange program with the University of Zamorano in Honduras. This bilingual
program helps both you and your conversation partner not only learn each other's language but is
a cultural exchange as well!
Directed by Dr. Patricia Perez De Leal, this program involves a commitment to speak in
Spanish and English with a native speaker every week for ten weeks. You will keep a diary of
your experiences, clearly marking each week: Semana 1,…etc. At the end of the semester, you
will upload your diary, written in Spanish to the forum for extra credit.
If you are currently taking 203, participation in this program is mandatory and involves other
requirements, but you can have extra credit for 204 if you also keep a diary and upload it at the
end of the semester.

Please contact Dr. Patricia Perez De Leal at pperez-gonzalez@[Link] to arrange your
speaking companion for the semester at your earliest convenience. This voluntary program for
extra credit will begin in the fourth week of the semester. Completion of the 10 weeks means
earning the maximum extra credit of 10 points.
Extra credit policy: Students in this intermediate course may earn up to 10 points of extra
credit per course/per semester (up to 1% of the total grade). This limit ensures that extra credit
cannot be used to offset poor performance on the core course components. Extra credit may help
a student raise their grade by one sublevel if and only if they were already close to doing so
anyway.
In addition to the Zamorano intercultural program or the films cited in this course, participation
in La mesa española, special events and creative projects may be developed as extra credit
opportunities in consultation with the instructor. Students are welcome to participate in as
many of these as they want. However, the extra credit is capped at 10 points per semester.
Tu Revista:
Tu Revista ([Link]) is an online publication for current and future Huskers learning
Spanish. It gives you the opportunity to share what you are learning and see how others are using
their Spanish. You can submit pieces of writing, audio and video recordings. We accept original
work as well as performances of others’ works (poems, songs, scenes from a play, etc.) with
proper attribution. Keep Tu Revista in mind as you are working on assignments for this class, and
talk to your instructor about submitting your best and most creative work. Submissions received
by October 15 will be considered for the Fall/Winter 2022 issue; projects from later in the
semester may be submitted by February 15 for consideration for the Spring 2023 issue. We
welcome a wide variety of submissions; during AY2022-23, there will be a particular focus on
the theme of “Translation”. Please follow the submission instructions on the Tu Revista page.
STATEMENT ON ACADEMIC DISHONESTY
Using another person’s work as your own constitutes academic dishonesty. If a student
plagiarizes another student’s work, both students may be charged with academic dishonesty.
Students may accept help from a tutor only to the extent that they are not representing the tutor’s
work as their own. Students caught cheating will receive a grade of zero* for the test or
assignment in question; the instructor may also report the incident to the Director of Student
Judicial Affairs and further action will be taken if warranted. Consult your Undergraduate
Bulletin for further information. The use of online translators for writing essays, summaries or
exams is strictly forbidden. It is obvious to the instructor when such translators have been used;
if the instructor suspects that an online translator has been used for an assignment, s/he may
discuss it with the student and the course coordinator. The student will receive a zero for that
assignment. (In courses where the lowest exam/quiz/composition grade, etc. is dropped, any
grade of zero received due to academic dishonesty will be retained and the lowest nonzero grade
will be dropped.) Repeated use of such programs will be reported as an incident of academic
dishonesty to the Director of Student Judicial Affairs, and further action will be taken if

● Doing all the minimum requirements for this course will prevent you from earning a
grade of D or F. Work that is complete and satisfactory will earn a grade in the C range.
Work that is complete and clearly above average will earn a grade in the B range. Only
work that is complete and generally outstanding will qualify for a grade in the A range.
To receive a grade of “Pass”, you must earn a C (73%) or better.
● Monday, August 29h: final day to drop courses for a 100% refund.
● Friday, October 14th: final day to change course registration to or from Pass/No Pass.
● Friday, November 11th: final day to withdraw from a course.
● Courses in the Basic and Intermediate Spanish Program are coordinated, meaning that
they follow a common textbook, calendar, syllabus, grading scheme and set of policies.
However, there will be natural variation across sections resulting from different
instructors and groups of students. If you are concerned about a perceived discrepancy
between your section and another one, please first contact your instructor. If your
concerns are not resolved after speaking with your instructor, please contact the

HEALTH AND SAFETY DURING COVID-19
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is possible that at some point your instructor may need to
self-isolate or self-quarantine due to a coronavirus infection. Should that become necessary, your
instructor will notify you that class will temporarily be shifted to online instruction. Your
instructor will contact you regarding any changes to your coursework during the period while in-
person class meetings are suspended. Your instructor will let you know how to continue
participating while your course is temporarily held online, and they will inform you as to the date
when in-person class meetings are planned to resume.
