Modal Verbs
Reglas Generales para Formar Oraciones con Modales
1. Forma Básica del Verbo:
Los modales siempre van seguidos del verbo en su forma
base (sin to ni conjugaciones).
Ejemplo: She can dance. (Ella puede bailar).
2. Negación:
Se agrega not después del modal para formar la negación.
Ejemplo: She cannot dance. (Ella no puede bailar).
3. Preguntas:
Se invierte el modal y el sujeto para hacer preguntas.
Ejemplo: Can she dance? (¿Puede ella bailar?).
4. Uso General:
No requieren conjugación, no cambian por sujeto, y no
necesitan auxiliares (do/does/did).

1. Can
Uso: Hablar de habilidad, permiso o posibilidad.
Significado: "Poder".
Ejemplo en Afirmativo:
I can swim. (Yo puedo nadar).
Ejemplo en Negativo:
I cannot swim. (No puedo nadar).
Ejemplo en Pregunta:
Can you swim? (¿Puedes nadar?).
2. Could
Uso: Expresar habilidad en el pasado, posibilidad, o permiso
formal.
Significado: "Podía", "Podría".
Ejemplo en Afirmativo:
She could read when she was five. (Ella podía leer cuando
tenía cinco años).
Ejemplo en Negativo:
She couldn’t read. (Ella no podía leer).
Ejemplo en Pregunta:
Could you help me? (¿Podrías ayudarme?).
3. May
Uso: Hablar de posibilidad o permiso formal.
Significado: "Poder".
Ejemplo en Afirmativo:
You may enter the room. (Puedes entrar a la habitación).
Ejemplo en Negativo:
You may not enter the room. (No puedes entrar a la
habitación).
Ejemplo en Pregunta:
May I use your phone? (¿Puedo usar tu teléfono?).
4. Might
Uso: Posibilidad remota o especulación.
Significado: "Podría".
Ejemplo en Afirmativo:
It might rain later. (Podría llover más tarde).
Ejemplo en Negativo:
It might not rain. (Podría no llover).
Ejemplo en Pregunta:
Might it rain later? (¿Podría llover más tarde?).
5. Shall
Uso: Ofrecimientos o sugerencias (formal, británico).
Significado: "Debería".
Ejemplo en Afirmativo:
Shall we go to the park? (¿Vamos al parque?).
Ejemplo en Negativo:
We shall not fail. (No fallaremos).
Ejemplo en Pregunta:
Shall I open the door? (¿Abro la puerta?).
6. Should
Uso: Consejo, recomendación o expectativa.
Significado: "Debería".
Ejemplo en Afirmativo:
You should study more. (Deberías estudiar más).
Ejemplo en Negativo:
You shouldn’t waste time. (No deberías perder tiempo).
Ejemplo en Pregunta:
Should I call her? (¿Debería llamarla?).
7. Will
Uso: Hablar del futuro o decisiones espontáneas.
Significado: "Futuro simple".
Ejemplo en Afirmativo:
I will travel tomorrow. (Viajaré mañana).
Ejemplo en Negativo:
I won’t travel tomorrow. (No viajaré mañana).
Ejemplo en Pregunta:
Will you travel tomorrow? (¿Viajarás mañana?).
8. Would
Uso: Condicional, cortesía o acciones repetitivas en el
pasado.
Significado: "Podría", "Haría".
Ejemplo en Afirmativo:
I would help you if I could. (Te ayudaría si pudiera).
Ejemplo en Negativo:
I wouldn’t go there. (No iría allí).
Ejemplo en Pregunta:
Would you like some coffee? (¿Te gustaría un poco de café?).
9. Must
Uso: Obligación fuerte o deducción lógica.
Significado: "Debe".
Ejemplo en Afirmativo:
You must wear a helmet. (Debes usar un casco).
Ejemplo en Negativo:
You must not touch this. (No debes tocar esto).
Ejemplo en Pregunta:
Must I finish this today? (¿Debo terminar esto hoy?).
Semi-Modal Verbs
Reglas Generales para Semi-Modales
1. Forma de Uso Mixta:
Los semi-modales pueden comportarse como modales, pero
también necesitan to o formas auxiliares para
conjugarse.
Ejemplo: He has to work tomorrow. (Él tiene que trabajar
mañana).
2. Negación y Preguntas:
A diferencia de los modales, los semi-modales necesitan
auxiliares como do/does/did para negaciones y preguntas.
Ejemplo en negativo: He doesn’t have to work tomorrow.
Ejemplo en pregunta: Does he have to work tomorrow?

1. Have to
Uso: Expresa obligación o necesidad.
Significado: "Tener que".
Ejemplo en Afirmativo:
She has to study for the exam. (Ella tiene que estudiar
para el examen).
Ejemplo en Negativo:
She doesn’t have to study. (Ella no tiene que estudiar).
Ejemplo en Pregunta:
Does she have to study? (¿Tiene que estudiar?).
2. Need to
Uso: Expresa necesidad o algo importante.
Significado: "Necesitar".
Ejemplo en Afirmativo:
We need to leave early. (Necesitamos salir temprano).
Ejemplo en Negativo:
We don’t need to leave early. (No necesitamos salir
temprano).
Ejemplo en Pregunta:
Do we need to leave early? (¿Necesitamos salir
temprano?).
3. Be able to
Uso: Hablar de habilidad en diferentes tiempos
(presente, pasado, futuro).
Significado: "Ser capaz de", "Poder".
Ejemplo en Afirmativo:
He is able to solve problems quickly. (Él es capaz de
resolver problemas rápido).
Ejemplo en Negativo:
He isn’t able to solve problems. (Él no es capaz de
resolver problemas).
Ejemplo en Pregunta:
Is he able to solve problems? (¿Es capaz de resolver
problemas?).
4. Ought to
Uso: Dar consejos o expresar deber moral.
Significado: "Debería".
Ejemplo en Afirmativo:
You ought to apologize. (Deberías disculparte).
Ejemplo en Negativo:
You ought not to apologize. (No deberías disculparte).
Ejemplo en Pregunta:
Ought I to apologize? (¿Debería disculparme?).
5. Used to
Uso: Hablar de hábitos o estados en el pasado que ya no
ocurren.
Significado: "Solía".
Ejemplo en Afirmativo:
She used to live in New York. (Ella solía vivir en Nueva
York).
Ejemplo en Negativo:
She didn’t use to live in New York. (Ella no solía vivir
en Nueva York).
Ejemplo en Pregunta:
Did she use to live in New York? (¿Solía vivir en Nueva
York?).
6. Dare to
Uso: Expresa desafío o valentía (generalmente en
contextos negativos, preguntas o literarios).
Significado: Atreverse a
Afirmativo:
How dare you speak to me like that?
(¿Cómo te atreves a hablarme así?)
Negativo:
I dare not tell him the truth.
(No me atrevo a decirle la verdad.)
Pregunta:
Dare she try it?
(¿Se atreverá a intentarlo?)
Perfect Modal Verbs
Los Perfect Modal Verbs se usan para hablar de posibilidades,
obligaciones o suposiciones en el pasado. Se forman
combinando un modal verb con have + past participle.
Must Have
Uso: Hablar de conclusiones o suposiciones fuertes sobre
algo ocurrido en el pasado.
Significado: "Debió haber".
Ejemplo en Afirmativo:
She must have forgotten her wallet. (Ella debió haber
olvidado su billetera).
Ejemplo en Negativo:
She must not have seen the sign. (Ella no debió haber
visto el letrero).
Ejemplo en Pregunta:
Must she have been so tired? (¿Debió haber estado tan
cansada?).
May Have
Uso: Hablar de posibilidades (50%) sobre el pasado.
Significado: "Pudo haber" o "Puede que haya".
Ejemplo en Afirmativo:
They may have missed the train. (Ellos pudieron haber
perdido el tren).
Ejemplo en Negativo:
They may not have heard the announcement. (Puede que no
hayan escuchado el anuncio).
Ejemplo en Pregunta:
May he have arrived late? (¿Pudo haber llegado tarde?).
Might Have
Uso: Hablar de posibilidades más débiles (menos del 50%)
sobre algo en el pasado.
Significado: "Quizás haya" o "Podría haber".
Ejemplo en Afirmativo:
She might have left early. (Quizás se haya ido
temprano).
Ejemplo en Negativo:
She might not have understood the instructions. (Quizás
no haya entendido las instrucciones).
Ejemplo en Pregunta:
Might they have been wrong? (¿Podrían haber estado
equivocados?).
Could Have
Uso: Referirse a algo que era posible en el pasado, pero
no ocurrió. También oportunidades perdidas.
Significado: "Pudo haber".
Ejemplo en Afirmativo:
You could have won the race. (Pudiste haber ganado la
carrera).
Ejemplo en Negativo:
You could not have done it without help. (No podrías
haberlo hecho sin ayuda).
Ejemplo en Pregunta:
Could she have been there on time? (¿Pudo haber estado
allí a tiempo?).
Would Have
Uso: Hablar de algo que habría sucedido si se cumpliera
una condición que no ocurrió.
Significado: "Habría".
Ejemplo en Afirmativo:
He would have helped you if you’d asked. (Él te habría
ayudado si se lo hubieras pedido).
Ejemplo en Negativo:
He wouldn’t have done it without your permission. (Él no
lo habría hecho sin tu permiso).
Ejemplo en Pregunta:
Would she have agreed with the plan? (¿Habría estado de
acuerdo con el plan?).
Should Have
Uso: Hablar de acciones esperadas, consejos no seguidos
o arrepentimientos sobre el pasado.
Significado: "Deberías haber".
Ejemplo en Afirmativo:
You should have studied harder. (Deberías haber
estudiado más).
Ejemplo en Negativo:
You shouldn’t have skipped the class. (No deberías haber
faltado a la clase).
Ejemplo en Pregunta:
Should I have called earlier? (¿Debería haber llamado
antes?).
