○ -negates a noun, Nouns with indefinite article and no article.
○ Examples:
○ I have no money.
○ Ich habe kein Geld.
○ I don’t have a car.

Positions of nicht in the
sentence
1. nicht always follows the verb “sein”
examples: Ich bin nicht Thomas.
I am not Thomas.

2. "nicht" follows the verb of the sentence.


There is one exception. If the verb is a separable verb, then "nicht" goes in front of the
prefix.
Ich gehe zur Schule. -> Ich gehe nicht zur Schule.
Ich sehe normalerweise fern. -> Ich sehe normalerweise (usually) nicht fern.
(fernsehen- to watch TV)

If the verb consists of several parts (verbs) then "nicht" goes in front of the second part (verb).
modal verbs: Ich muss jetzt gehen. -> Ich muss jetzt nicht gehen.
future tense: Ich werde später gehen. -> Ich werde später nicht gehen.
present perfekt tense: Ich habe dich gesehen. -> Ich habe dich nicht gesehen.

○ 3.) "nicht" follows a pronoun or an object which can be substituted by a
pronoun.
○ Ich sehe dich. -> Ich sehe dich nicht.
○ Sie kennt Mr Wolf. -> Sie kennt Mr. Wolf nicht. (Mr Wolf could be
substituted by "ihn".) kennen- to know/ to recognize
○ (*However if nicht occurs in a sentence with a sein verb and an object which can be
substituted by a pronoun, nicht will follow the verb sein.)

○ He is not Christian Grey--- Er ist nicht Christian Grey.


○ 4. "nicht" follows the noun in a question.
○ Hast du das Telefon? -> Hast du das Telefon nicht?
○ Magst du das Buch? -> Magst du das Buch nicht?

○ 5. "nicht" follows a specific time.
○ Wir kämpfen (to fight/ battle) heute gegen euch. -> Wir kämpfen heute nicht
gegen euch.
○ Ich gehe morgen ins Kino. -> Ich gehe morgen nicht ins Kino.
○ There is one exception, however.
○ If you use a preposition like "um, am" (=at/on) for the specific time, then "nicht"
goes in front of the specific time.
○ Ich komme um 8.00 Uhr zu dir. -> Ich komme nicht um 8.00 Uhr zu dir.
○ Sie kommen am Montag hier an. -> Sie kommen nicht am Montag hier an.
○ 6. “nicht” goes infront of the prepositions.
Ich komme nicht aus/von den Philippinen.
Sie geht nicht mit ihren Freunden mit.
Ich gehe nicht zur Schule.

○ 2.) My boyfriend doesn’t work in Saudi.
○ 3.) She doesn’t like you.
○ 4.) The train is not arriving at 7 o’ clock. Ankommen- to arrive
○ 5.) She isn’t my sister.
○ 6.) I’m not angry.
○ 7.) I am not going on Wednesday.
○ 8.) You (pl. inf) are not playing today.
○ 9.) He doesn't love my friend (female).
○ 10.) You (formal) are not tired (müde) and exhausted (erschöpft).
