Detailed German A1 Notes (Lec 36) Week 9 lecture 3

Introduction and Course Context

 Today’s content begins with material from the book “Moment Mal!”. This book features lessons with
questions and expressions at the end of each page.

 The lesson includes an introduction to colors (Farben) and essential verbs for expressing preferences and
physical states.

Farben (Colors)

 Examples of colors introduced:

o rosa (pink), blau (blue), rotbraun (red-brown), türkis (turquoise), lila (purple), violett (violet), oliv
(olive), gelb (yellow), orange (orange)

 Welche Farbe ist das? means “Which color is this?”

 Example sentence:

o Wie finden Sie die Farben? – “How do you find the colors?”

 Respond: Das sind schöne Farben. (“Those are beautiful colors.”)

 Another way: Ich finde die Farben schön.

 Use “schön” to react positively (“I find the colors pretty”).

Key Verbs: gefallen, gehören, passen, schmecken

1. gefallen – to please, to appeal

 Shows what you like (literally, something “pleases” you).

 It is a strong/irregular verb (like “fahren”).

o Conjugation: ich gefalle, du gefällst, er/sie/es gefällt, wir gefallen, ihr gefallt, sie gefallen

o The subject is what is liked, the person who likes uses the Dative case.

 Example:

o Ich mag die Farbe Blau (“I like the color blue”) →
Blau gefällt mir. (“Blue pleases me.”)

o Grün gefällt mir auch.

o Use mir (Dative of “ich”) for “to me”.

2. gehören – to belong (to)

 To show possession/ownership (that something belongs to someone).

 Also used with Dative.

 Example:

o Das Buch gehört mir. (“The book belongs to me.”)

o Das Buch gehört meinem Freund.

 Note on case:

o “mein Freund” → Dative (“meinem Freund”)

o “der Freund” → Dative “dem Freund”

3. passen – to fit, to suit

 Used for sizes, suitability, or colors (“Red suits you”).

 Also takes the Dative case.

 Examples:

o Rot passt dir. (“Red suits you.”)

o Das Hemd passt dir (gut). (“The shirt fits you (well).”)

o Add gut to intensify.

4. schmecken – to taste (good)

 Used to describe taste/sensory preferences.

 Dative case is used (who finds it tasty).

 Examples:

o Der Kaffee ist stark. Er schmeckt mir. (“The coffee is strong. I like it / It tastes good to me.”)

o Add gut for “well,” “Er schmeckt mir gut.”

 Das schmeckt gut = It tastes good in general.

 Es schmeckt mir (gut) = I personally like the taste.

Dative Forms and Usage

 All four verbs above (gefallen, gehören, passen, schmecken) use the Dative for the person.

 mir (to me), dir (to you), uns (to us), etc.

Example Exchanges & Dialogues

 How do you like it?

o Wie schmeckt er dir? (How does it taste to you? — with “er” referring to a masculine noun such as
der Kuchen)

o Ich habe diesen Kuchen gebacken. (“I have baked this cake.”)

o Wie schmeckt er dir? (“How do you like it?”)

 Wie finden Sie die Farben?

o Ich finde die Farben schön. ("I find the colors pretty.")

o Gefallen dir die Farben? / Gefallen Ihnen die Farben?

 Ja, die Farben gefallen mir. (“Yes, I like the colors.”)

 Nein, die Farben gefallen mir nicht. (“No, I don’t like the colors.”)

 Ich mag die Farben. is also correct.

Plurals and Verb Conjugation

 Die Farben gefallen mir — plural subject (gefallen is plural here, unlike gefällt for singular).

 Remember verb endings matter: “mag” not “mage”.

List of Color Preferences (Class Practice)

 Each student shared:

o Ich mag Rosa nicht gern und ich mag Blau gern. (“I don't like pink, I like blue.”)

o Ich mag Gelb gern. (“I like yellow.”)

o Ich mag Schwarz gern. (“I like black.”)

o Ich mag Weiß nicht gern. (“I don't like white.”)

o Ich mag jede Farbe. ("I like every color.")

o Ich mag alle Farben. ("I like all colors.")

Expressing Mixed/Neutral Opinions

 Ich mag grün, aber ich habe keine Meinung zu den anderen Farben.

o “I like green, but I have no opinion about the other colors.”

 Expression for “There is no color that I don't like” (relative clause):

o Es gibt keine Farbe, die ich nicht mag.

 To have an opinion (about):

o eine Meinung zu etwas haben (“to have an opinion about something”)

o “zu” + dative: “zu den anderen Farben” (“about the other colors”)

Grammar: Relative Clauses Introduction

 Es gibt keine Farbe, die ich nicht mag. (“There is no color that I don’t like.”)

o “die ich nicht mag” is a relative clause referring to Farbe.

Words about Art and Composition

 Gemälde = painting (from malen = to paint)

 Bild = picture

 Foto = photograph

 bauen = to build; Gebäude = building

 Komposition (composition): arrangement/structure of elements

 To describe a painting:

o Das Bild hat schöne Farben. ("The picture has beautiful colors.")

o Die Farben sind dunkel/hell. (The colors are dark/bright.)

o Die Farben sind glanzlos/matt/dumpf/öde/uninteressant.

 dunkel = dark, hell = bright, glanzlos = dull (without shine), matt = matt, dumpf = dull (more
for sound), öde/uninteressant = boring/uninteresting

Art Expression and Discussion

 Discussing a painting:

o Wie finden Sie das Bild? (“How do you find the picture?”)

o Gefällt Ihnen das Bild? (“Do you like the picture?”)

o Mögen Sie das Bild? (“Do you like the picture?”)

More Useful Vocabulary and Structures

 tragen = to wear/carry (trägt conjugation: er trägt)

 Farben der Kleider = colors of clothes

Perfect Tense Introduction (Vorschau)

 German uses the perfect tense (forming with auxiliary “haben” or “sein” + participle) to discuss completed
actions.

o Ich habe diesen Kuchen gebacken. (“I have baked this cake.”)

o backen (to bake) → gebacken (past participle)
