Die Vergleiche (the comparisons)
• Ich bin so groß wie du. Ich bin älter als du.
In the first sentence we use ‘so..wie’ to compare two
people, (Ich and du), but when we use ‘wie’ it means
these two people are the same in size after comparing
them. In the second sentence we use ‘als’ to compare the
same two people, and when we use ‘als’ it means that
these people are different in comparison.
• gut - besser - am besten
Messi ist so gut wie Ronaldo. Ronaldo ist besser als
Messi.
Here again we see in the first sentence that it says Messi
is as good (wie) as Ronaldo, but in the second sentence it
says ‘besser als’ meaning that now we are saying that
Ronaldo is better than Messi.
• Ich bin so [schlau] wie Sie. Ich bin netter als du.
Wenn wir etwas miteinander vergleichen nutzen wir
"so..wie" wenn es gleich ist, und "als" wenn es
unterschliedlich ist. (When we compare something with
each other we use 'wie' if it is the same, and 'als' if it is
different.)
