Adjectives (Nominative)
"Die Adjektive", are words that you use to describe nouns. They tell us more about
size, color, and feelings. By learning adjectives, you can make your descriptions
more vivid. For example, instead of just saying "Der Tisch" (The table), you can say
"Der große Tisch" (The big table) to create a clearer picture.
Here are some adjectives with their opposites
Klein (small) and groß (big):
"Der Hund ist groß." (The dog is big.) "Die Maus ist klein." (The mouse is small.)
Alt (old) and neu (new):
"Der BMW ist alt." (The BMW is old.) "Der VW ist neu." (The VW is new.)
Schnell (fast) and langsam (slow):
"Die Person läuft schnell." (The person walks fast.) "Die Schildkröte ist sehr
langsam." (The turtle is very slow.)
Glücklich (happy) and traurig (sad):
"Mein Freund ist heute glücklich." (My friend is happy today.) "Die Lehrer sind
traurig." (The teachers are sad.)
You can amplify the meaning of adjectives using words like "sehr" (very), making
"langsam" (slow) become "sehr langsam" (very slow).
Other adjective pairs we learned include:
Richtig (right) and falsch (wrong)
Lang (long) and kurz (short)
Heiß (hot) and kalt (cold)
Krank (ill) and gesund (healthy)
Pünktlich (on time) and spät (late)
Schwer (difficult) and einfach (easy)
Teuer (expensive) and billig (cheap)
Dunkel (dark) and hell (bright)
Gut (good) and schlecht (bad)
Nett (nice) and böse (angry)
Using these adjectives, you can describe people, objects, and situations more
effectively in German. To practice, try to use these adjectives in sentences and pair
them with their opposites to reinforce your learning.
