Nomen Hören Wiederholen Schreiben
What is a noun (nomen)? Every noun has its own
GENDER.
A noun is a word which names
a thing, a person, a concept or
anything else!
z.B (zum Beispiel)
der Bus,
der Mann,
die Freundschaft,
das Land,
der Tag
All true nouns in German have
a capital letter: der Bus, der
Mann etc…

Masculine Feminine Neutral
• der Bus • die Freundschaft • das Land
• der Mann
The 3 Genders
Sprechen &
Hören Wiederholen Schreiben
The words for people, things and concepts can belong to any of the three genders – there is not much
logic about it.
z.B (zum Beispiel)
das Messer die Gabel
(neutral) (feminine)
der Löffel
(masculine)
der, die, das

Sprechen &
Hören Wiederholen Schreiben
• The word for person (die Person), is feminine even when it
refers to a man.
• The word for girl (das Mädchen) is neutral
It can be confusing.
The only way to cope and understand this is to remember the
THE (der, die or das) as part of each noun and learn it with
the noun.
z.B – do not think of Bus as Bus but as der Bus.
When to Use Which German Article?
Unfortunately, there are no rules in German that define the gender of a noun.
Most of the words are exceptions.
However, the following rules in this table do not have exceptions
and are worth learning.
In order to learn German properly, you must learn each noun
along with its specific article. From now on we will learn every
new word with its proper article.
der (Männlich)
The (Masculine)
Masculine (der) are usually:
Male persons Days of the week Months of the year Seasons Car Makes Monetary units
e.g. der Vater e.g. der Mittwoch e.g. der Juni e.g. der Sommer e.g. der e.g. der Euro
Volkswagen
The important part of any noun is the end of it, or, its suffix. There are certain
suffixes that are almost exclusively masculine: -
Masculine: [WORDS ENDING WITH] -ant, -ast, -ich, -ig, -ismus, -ling, -or, -us
Some animals
e.g. der Hund
der
