German Prepositions: A1 to B1 Level (With Examples and English Translations)

1. What Are Prepositions?

Prepositions are words that connect elements in a sentence, showing relationships like location,
direction, time, or manner. In German, prepositions can govern different cases (Akkusativ, Dativ,
or Genitiv), which means they affect the articles and pronouns that follow them.

2. Types of Prepositions
A) Accusative Prepositions (Akkusativpräpositionen)

These prepositions always take the accusative case.

3. Extra Tips for Learning Prepositions

✅ Memorize prepositions with their case: Always learn prepositions with the correct case
(e.g., “für” always takes the accusative).

✅ Use mnemonics: For example, remember "aus, außer, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu" as
common dative prepositions.

✅ Practice with real sentences: Try writing your own sentences using different prepositions.

✅ Pay attention to two-way prepositions: Remember the difference between movement

(accusative) and position (dative).

✅ Listen and read in German: The more you expose yourself to German, the more naturally
you’ll understand how prepositions are used.

This guide covers all essential prepositions from A1 to B1 with clear explanations and examples.
