German B1 Grammar Notes
1. Bis (until)
Function: Marks an endpoint of an action.
Type: Subordinating conjunction -> Verb goes to the end of the clause.
Example:
Ich warte, bis du kommst.
(I'll wait until you come.)
2. Seit / Seitdem (since)
Function: Describes when something started and is still ongoing.
Type:
- "seit" is a preposition (with Dative) or subordinating conjunction.
- "seitdem" is only a subordinating conjunction.
Examples:
Seit dem Jahr 2020 lerne ich Deutsch. (Preposition + Dative)
Ich lerne Deutsch, seit ich in Deutschland bin. (Subordinating conjunction)
Seitdem ich in Deutschland bin, lerne ich Deutsch. (Same meaning with "seitdem")
3. Bevor (before)
Function: Refers to an action that happens after another one (but we mention it first).
Type: Subordinating conjunction -> Verb at the end.
Example:
Ich wasche mir die Hände, bevor ich esse.
(I wash my hands before I eat.)
4. Nachdem (after)
Function: Describes two actions in sequence, usually in the past.

Typical tense structure:
- Nachdem-Clause: Plusquamperfekt (had done)
- Main Clause: Präteritum or Perfekt (did)
Example:
Nachdem er gegessen hatte, ging er spazieren.
(After he had eaten, he went for a walk.)
Informal usage:
- Both clauses can be in Präteritum: Nachdem er aß, ging er spazieren.
Present/Future:
- Can also be used with present or future tenses.
Extra Examples:
- Nachdem sie angekommen war, begannen wir das Essen.
- Nachdem er das Buch gelesen hatte, schaute er den Film.
