Hohe Messgenauigkeit, Temperaturkompensation, lineare Zifferblatteinteilung,
unempfindlich gegen Erschütterungen und Vibrationen, einfache
Nullpunktberichtigung.
WARTUNGSVORSCHRIFTEN
Ansonsten
kann das Gerät wartungsfrei betrieben werden.
ALTIMETERS
Altimeters measure static air pressure, which decreases with altitude.
The pressure-sensitive measuring element is a diaphragm capsule from which the
air has been removed (aneroid capsule), which reacts to the effect of changing air
pressure as the aircraft changes altitude. Tempered, aged copper-beryllium dia-
phragms ensure highly accurate readings. Diaphragm movement is transmitted to
the instrument pointers by a linkage and gearwheels – the whole is insensitive to
shock and vibration. A bimetal link compensates the effects of temperature change.
FEATURES
High measuring precisions, temperature compensation, linear dialgauge
gradations, insensitive to shock and vibration, simple zero adjustement.
MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS
Leak testing should be carried out at least every 2 years. Otherwise, the instrument
does not require any maintenance.

FAHRTMESSER
Das Messorgan ist eine offene Membrandose mit besten elastischen Eigenschaften;
AIRSPEED INDICATORS
Airspeed indicators measure the difference between total pressure and static pres-
sure. The total (or measured) pressure is sensed by a pitot tube positioned at the
stagnation point of the airstream and is carried to the airspeed indicator by a hose.
A static pressure sensor can also be connected. The measuring element is an open
diaphragm unit with excellent elastic properties; hysteresis (differences between
advance and return movement) and secondary elastic effects are negligible. The
effect total pressure an static pressure acts on the diaphragm, causing a defor-
mation that is transferred to the pointer by a linkage and gear mechanism. The
different operating ranges of the aircraft can be identified by colour markings on the
airspeed indicator dial; e. g. green for normal operating range, yellow for caution,
white for flaps down and red for maximum speed. The instruments are insensitive
to shock and vibration.
MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS
Leak testing should be carried out at least every 2 years. Otherwise, the instrument
does not require any maintenance.

APPLICATION
This precision instrument is enclosed in a compact housing and operates 1 2 Also known as a Prandtl tube, the pitot tube is the sensor for aircraft
by means of a measuring tube. This ensures high accuracy even at very instruments. It consists of a cylindrical tube open at the front to sense total
low speeds. EBF-series airspeed indicators are available with a pitot tube pressure (measuring pressure for airspeed indicators) and slotted along
and static pressure connection. the sides to sense static pressure. These pressures must then be carried
to the instruments by hoses. We manufacture two types of pitot tube for
TECHNICAL DATA installation in a number of different aircraft.
Available measuring ranges:

WARTUNGSVORSCHRIFTEN
Vane type variometers measure the change in air pressure inherent to changes in altitude. The instru-
ment consists of a cylindrical chamber with a precision-fit baffle plate (vane) rotating on shockproofje-
wel bearings and centered by a coil spring. The vane divides the chamber in two: one section is open
to static pressure, while the other is connected to an expransion tank, in which a volume of air is insu-
lated against the thermal effects. Differences in pressure are compensated by the narrow gap between
vane and chamber wall. There is a change in static pressure when an aircraft climbs or descends, and
a differential pressure is established between the two sections of the chamber. The resultant deflection
of the vane provides a measure of the vertical speed and this deflection is transferred to the pointer of
the instrument. The response rate of a variometer is important. In high-performance gliding, upcurrents
can be identified all the quicker and used all the more efficiently if the variometer responds without delay.
Defined as the length of time the instrument takes to reach 65% of its final reading in response to
a sudden change in vertical speed, the time constant serves as a standard for gauging speed of
response. The faster a variometer responds, the smaller is its time constant.
Vane type variometers with large measuring ranges such as 5 StV 5 (±10 m/sec. and ±15 m/sec.) have
small time constants. The volume of the expansion tank must be increased in order to achieve compa-
rable figures with variometers having the most common measuring range (±5 metres/second).
MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS
Leak testing should be carried out at least every 2 years. Otherwise, the instrument does not require
any maintenance.

QUALITY POLICY
PRINCIPLE EXPLANATION OF THE MANAGEMENT REGARDING QUALITY POLICY
On October 1st 1931, Messrs. GEBRÜDER WINTER OHG. Was founded by the three brothers Eugen, Heinrich and Willi. The production and
distribution of various meteorological instruments was object of the company. In 1935 the actual residence of the firm in the main street was bought. In
1951 and 1960 the real estate has been extended up to the actual size. The machine areas and adjustment rooms as well as the office and despatch
department have been renewed and modernized several times up to now. As additional product to the meteorological instruments, the young company
soon showed a good choice by starting the development and construction of flight instruments. In flying circles “Winter flight instruments” have a
world-wide excellent reputation.

Vanetype variometers function by measuring air pressure changes associated with altitude changes. They consist of a cylindrical chamber split by a closely fitting rotating vane bordered by air cushions for shock absorption. One chamber side is connected to static pressure, while the other is linked to an expansion tank insulated against temperature changes. The vane's deflection due to pressure differences reflects vertical speed and is conveyed to the instrument's pointer. Key to their function is the time constant, which measures the instrument's response speed to vertical speed changes. A lower time constant indicates a faster display response, essential for optimizing thermal detection and utilization in gliding .
The recommended maintenance practices for an airspeed indicator with a Großkinsky variable-camber flap ring include regular checks to ensure the ring's mechanical integrity and accuracy, especially crucial in high-performance gliding competitions where conditions can induce accelerations up to 1.3 g. Besides routine inspections, the device must also be recalibrated if there's any noticeable deviation in indicated variables, a service which might require sending the indicator back to the manufacturer for precise tuning and updating the ring to handle specific aircraft models .
Shock and vibration insensitivity in flight instruments is significant as it ensures measurement accuracy and reliability under varying physical conditions during flight. This robustness is often achieved through the use of tempered, aged materials such as copper-berylium diaphragms, which maintain consistent mechanical properties despite stress. Moreover, the linkage and gearwheel systems used in instrument design are engineered to be resilient against operational shocks, ensuring that readings are stable and unaffected by turbulence or abrupt maneuvers .
In competition gliding, an airspeed indicator might require calibration adjustments to accommodate varying g-loads, such as those occurring in high-performance scenarios. The Großkinsky ring allows for in-flight adjustments, where a secondary ring calibrated for higher acceleration, such as 1.3g, can be affixed depending on gliding conditions. This ensures accuracy in flap settings aligned with changed flight dynamics, critical in maximizing performance efficiency and safety while mitigating risks associated with incorrect speed or flap positioning .
Airspeed indicators vary mainly in diameter, measuring range, and weight. Smaller units such as those with a diameter of 57mm typically weigh 0.075 kg, while larger ones like those with a diameter of 80mm weigh 0.205 kg. The installation depth also varies with smaller units having a depth matching their diameter, while larger units tend to have a greater depth proportionate to their diameter size (e.g., 77.5mm). These differences affect dashboard layout and potentially aircraft weight distribution, crucial in lightweight aircraft design such as gliders where every gram affects flight characteristics .
The optimal wing flap positions of a glider are influenced by the different take-off weights, which affect the wing loading and hence the optimal flap settings for specific speed ranges. The Großkinsky variable-camber flap ring manages this by using a dual scale to indicate flight weight 'G' and the corresponding wing load 'G/F'. The ring, which is rotatable, allows adjustments according to the take-off weight and shows the correct flap positions via arrows on the airspeed indicator scale. In high-performance gliding, where acceleration values as high as 1.3 g occur, a second ring can be fitted during a flight to provide the appropriate values. Only specific airspeed indicators with 510° scales are suitable for this adjustment .
Pitot tubes and pressure sensors are strategically arranged on a glider such that the pitot tube is positioned at the nose to measure total pressure, while static pressure sensors are placed on either side of the fuselage where airflow is least disruptive. This configuration is vital to isolate the measurements from any aerodynamic interference caused by the airframe, ensuring precise differential pressure readings required for accurate airspeed calculation and essential for the safe operation and performance optimization of the glider .
The time constant, which indicates the time required for a variometer to reach 65% of its final reading after a change in vertical speed, directly influences glider performance. Lower time constants are preferred in high-performance gliders for quick thermal response, allowing pilots to react promptly to altitude changes. Design considerations include minimizing instrument mass and volume without compromising the responsiveness, balancing these with the integration of larger expansion tanks to expedite pressure equilibration .
The weight and installation depth of airspeed indicators are critical factors for aircraft engineers, particularly in designing lightweight aircraft like gliders. Indicators that are lighter and more compact allow for better weight distribution and balance within the aircraft's instrumentation panel. Deeper installation can influence cockpit design, potentially increasing drag or affecting ergonomic layout. Engineers must weigh precision instrumentation needs against these constraints, striving for minimal mass and optimal aerodynamic integration .
The stauscheiben-variometer's effectiveness in measuring altitude changes is ensured by its split cylindrical chamber, utilizing a rotary vane to measure air pressure changes. The chamber's division, with one part connected to static pressure and the other to an expansion tank, creates a differential pressure scenario. The expansion tank insulates the air volume against temperature fluctuations, preventing variations that could affect measurement accuracy. Pressure changes deflect the vane, and the extent of this deflection is used to measure vertical speed, which is then displayed on the instrument .
