1.0 INTRODUCTION
The FAST is Pratt & Whitney Engine Services fourth generation monitoring and transmitting device. It
collects data from the aircraft data buses and discrete inputs and stores it in resident non-volatile
memory. Data regarding engine run performance is then extracted and transmitted to a ground
station for trend monitoring and maintenance recommendations. The FAST enables the operator to
control, quantify, and manage engine maintenance operations and reduce direct operating costs.
Collection: In its data acquisition role, the FAST unit is a passive receiver of information,
automatically recording data received.
Transmission: The FAST system automatically transmits to a ground station via a Cellular antenna
or to a WiFi network via a WLAN antenna. Once the aircraft engine has shutdown and power to the
aircraft bus is removed, the unit will begin the transmission process. The FAST system data can be
manually retrieved by download as detailed below.
Manually Retrieving Data: Collected data is accessed through a download serial port located on
FAST processor. Communication with the FAST is achieved via a laptop computer with the P&W
Engine Services Monitor Transfer Module (MonitorTM) installed. The MonitorTM can also be used to
assist maintenance personnel in performing system diagnostics, calibrations, and real-time live
sensor display.
System Configuration: Software configuration files, which customize the operation of the unit to a
particular aircraft, can be loaded to the FAST system manually using ground based software or
automatically when the FAST makes a wireless connection (wireless LAN or cellular). This software
enables direct communication with the FAST to perform maintenance functions, such as loading and
retrieving configurations, retrieving data files and performing system diagnostics via a serial
connection.
Configuration Options: The following Air Tractor configuration options are approved:
installation drawing 53316 “Installation - P-128 OAT Probe – MVP50T”. Contact EI/Air Tractor for
these components/approvals.

It is the installer’s responsibility to update the aircraft electrical loads document to reflect the
additional loads incurred as a result of this modification. The installer must also ensure the new total
Electrical Load included in the modified aircraft is within guidelines established in ASTM F2490 –
Standard Guide for Aircraft Electrical Load and Power Source Capacity Analysis.
Power for the FAST processor is provided by the HOT BATT BUS through circuit breaker labelled
FAST BATT. Aircraft switched bus power is provided to the FAST processor through circuit breaker
labelled FAST BUS. After the aircraft lands and the engine and switched bus power are turned off,
FAST will continue to be powered by the 28 VDC BATT BUS input until the data is successfully
transmitted. Even if the FAST processor is not able to transmit the data successfully it will only
remain powered by the battery bus for a maximum of 30 minutes at which time it will automatically
turn off. Refer to Table 6-1 for FAST electrical load data.
In addition, the Air Tractor mission profile occasionally requires the engine to remain on after landing
while refueling and hopper reloading is conducted. In this instance, the pilot may initiate a manual
transmit of the FAST parameters by pressing the EVENT MARK Switch for a minimum of three
seconds at engine idle power.

Test Conditions
For ground - all testing will be performed under the following requirements and conditions:
a. The aircraft will be fully powered with electrical and avionics systems energized. In addition, all
flight deck displays will be energized and running during the test.
b. During the aircraft systems test, the engine will be operating and monitored at normal ground idle
settings (some portions of the test can be accomplished without engine running, such as
source/monitors that involve avionics and electrical systems only; however, engine must be
operated at some point for the electrical transient and EMI/EMC/RFI test).
c. The FAST system will be operated, and the aircraft systems monitored for interference.
d. Other aircraft systems will be operated, and the FAST system will be monitored for interference.
e. During the test, the aircraft should be placed away from other aircraft, large metal structures, fuel
depots, and fuel trucks.
Equipment Operation
Equipment shall be operated as detailed below;
a. Receivers with Audible Outputs: With each receiver operating from its normal receiver
antenna, a background noise level will be noted with minimum electrical and electronic
equipment in operation: All potential interference-producing devices are operated.
b. Receivers with Visual Outputs: Those receivers that do not have audible outputs or whose
audio outputs alone would not display any interference will also be evaluated by monitoring their
visual outputs. These receivers include Glide Slope, Marker Beacon, Radar Altimeter, DME,
GPS, TCAS, and VHF Navigation.
- The visual outputs of each system will be monitored to determinate proper operation. Those
outputs will be monitored continuously as the potential interference sources are energized.
c. Engine: During a ground engine run, potential EMI / EMC / RFI to engine indication and related
circuits will be evaluated.
e. Air Data Computers: A ground test set will be utilized to provide altitude and airspeed inputs.
The flight instruments will be observed for inadvertent changes while the potential interference
producing system is operated.
f. Interior Systems: Individual systems are placed to “On/Off/On” and to “hi/low” modes of
operation.
Evaluation Criteria
The following criteria shall apply and shall be considered when evaluating the EMI / EMC / RFI test.
a. Success Criteria: The "Success Criteria" for the test is the verification of the absence of EMI /
EMC / RFI between existing systems and newly installed systems.
b. Failure Criteria: The "Failure Criteria" for the test function or step is the demonstration of one or
more of the following EMI / EMC / RFI conditions.
- Degraded system operation: Flickering or otherwise inappropriate operation; changes or
fluctuating indications or readings; loss of lock-on test-set or remote location signals.
b. All aircraft systems will be energized to normal operation and establish normal monitor
conditions.
c. All aircraft systems will be sequentially operated including transmitters set to LOW, MID and
HIGH frequencies, as other systems are monitored for possible interference. If radio traffic is
present, or if for any reason the test frequency is unavailable or unusable, choose another
frequency in close proximity to the given test frequency.
d. All systems that can be tested on the ground will be checked for EMI/EMC/RFI.
e. If any abnormal or adverse interference to any aircraft system is observed, the indications will be
recorded.
f. Upon completion of these interference tests the test data shall be recorded in the applicable
spaces provided in the System Checklist of this report.
Each system of the aircraft shall be operated in a source mode and/or in a monitor mode without
engine running. These two modes are as follows:
Monitor (Receptor) Mode: The controls on each equipment unit associated with a particular system
are operated so that the system is exercised in its various operational modes. In this way, any
potentially aircraft systems interfering signals to the FAST processor will be generated.
Source (Emitter) Mode: During the performance of each test, the majority of the other systems may
be operated in a monitor mode. In this mode, the equipment controls will be initially adjusted to
maintain the system in an operational state. The equipment will be monitored for any evidence of
susceptibility to emissions from the FAST processor.
The Systems Checklist of this report lists the major systems to be operated and monitored for test to be
performed. Space for data recording is provided. All systems that can be tested on the ground will be
noted in the Systems Checklist. Connect the maintenance laptop to the FAST processor and monitor
that there is no data recording disruption while operating the aircraft systems.

1 Introduction
Advancements surrounding fast, intelligent real time in-flight data monitoring, case-based reasoning and next
generation trending will drive significant improvements in aircraft availability. Key to maximizing aircraft
availability is PWC’s vision of an extensive set of real time prognostic and diagnostic tools employed to keep
each of our customers flying, while ensuring that the all-important aspects of safety and low cost of operation
are also addressed.
1.1 System Description
The FAST is Pratt & Whitney Engine Services fourth generation of monitoring and transmission devices.
The FAST provides a wide range of communication interfaces through which aircraft and engine performance
data can be collected. The source of this data can be an existing airframe or engine recording system,
ARINC-429, or QAR data stream. The data collected will be transmitted to a ground station via cellular
protocol when the aircraft is on the ground and the engine(s) are off. The data can also be retrieved through a
RS-485 connection to a PC. Both the collection and transmission of data is done in a common, seamless,
inseparable platform from both a hardware and software perspective.
1.2 Functional Overview
The FAST will collect the data from the aircraft’s data busses and discrete inputs and will store in resident
non-volatile memory where data summarizing engine run performance will be maintained, analyzed, and
transmitted to the ground station for trend monitoring and maintenance recommendations.
Software configuration files, which customize the operation of the product to the particular aircraft it is
installed on, can be loaded to the FAST from a remote server or manually loaded with the ground based
software. The ground based software enables direct communication with the FAST to perform maintenance
functions, such as loading or retrieving configurations, retrieving data files, and performing system
diagnostics via a serial connection.
The FAST will provide the communications system through which aircraft and engine performance data can
stream to the Internet without operator intervention. The destination will be the Pratt & Whitney Engine
Services ground station. The FAST will be designed to support multiple communication modes to achieve
data transfer. These will include hardwire, cellular, and wireless LAN.
1.3 Purpose
The purpose of this document is to provide step by step instructions on how to install the Transfer Module
program onto a laptop and use the program to configure and test the FAST processor after it has been
successfully installed in the aircraft. The Transfer Module program is the ground based software.
1) Log onto the My P&WC POWER customer portal at the following address:
[Link]
NOTE: If you are using 32-bit operating system, [Link] cannot be opened.
3) Follow the onscreen instructions. Select the “Finish” button to complete the driver installation. Refer
to Figure 7.
NOTE: A Customer Activation Form (CAF) must be completed before a configuration file can be retrieved
from the Webserver. Aircraft, engine, and SIM card data are some of the details in the CAF that
are required. The CAF can be obtained from the Dealer or authorized representative.
8) Click on the “Monitor Status” button. This will provide you a quick status of the box configuration.

5) Close the Monitor Transfer Module program and disconnect the Communication Cable between your
laptop computer’s USB port and the FAST J3 Comm Port.
6) Turn aircraft power off.
CAUTION
For Cessna Caravan Operators – Once aircraft power has been ON for a minimum of 2
minutes the aircraft power should be shut OFF before advancing to the next step. The
cellular Transmission will only occur when the aircraft Bus Power is switched OFF.
The FAST will latch to the “HOT” Battery Bus for a maximum of 10 minutes.
4) Open the Monitor Transfer Module program and click on “Test Monitor Transmission” and confirm
that all status messages indicate “PASS”, as shown in Figure 15.
NOTE: The transmission is completed via a cellular connection and may not transmit in the
hangar. A Cellular signal between -50 and -95 dB is considered a good signal.
NOTE: Once all status messages indicate “PASS” the transmission is complete. If data logs
were stored in the FAST they can now be viewed on Webserver.
6 Aircraft Testing
While following the requirements of FAR 91.407, it is recommended that the aircraft be inspected for
airworthiness prior to testing. If the ground test of the modified aircraft is not successfully completed, the aircraft
should be returned to the original aircraft configuration until the tests are completed and acceptable.
After installation of the FAST, it is recommended that ground tests be performed to verify the correct operation of
the system in the aircraft. The following sections outline the suggested aircraft and system test procedures.
6.1 Aircraft Ground Test – Engine(s) OFF
010 With external power connected to aircraft, apply external power to the aircraft bus.
020 Power on all avionics.
030 Tune Comm 1 and Comm 2 VHF radios to the frequencies in Table 1 and verify that there is no
interference caused by the FAST. This can normally be conducted by checking for auto squelch break
on each listed frequency.
040 If interference is suspected at any particular frequency, pull the FAST circuit breaker to see if the
interference subsides.
050 If the aircraft is equipped with a GPS navigation receiver, display the satellite status page and cycle
power on the FAST.
060 Verify that the GPS signal strength is not affected by the operation of the FAST.
070 Tune the #1 and #2 VHF NAV receivers to receive a valid navigational signal from either a VOR
ramp tester or a locally tuned VOR navigation transmitter.
080 Verify that valid course deviation and a retracted NAV flag are displayed on the HSI or the VOR
course indicator.
090 Cycle power on the FAST and verify that there is no effect on the displayed NAV data.
100 Survey the aircraft for any other installed equipment (HGS, TCAS, ADF, DME, TAWS, etc.) that
may be affected by interference from the FAST. Perform any additional tests as required to determine
if the FAST creates objectionable interference. This may be accomplished by pulling the FAST
circuit breaker while observing the subject equipment. List the additional equipment tested and any
observed effects in the Electromagnetic Compatibility Testing Table (See Table 2).

1.1 Purpose
The purpose of this report is to provide weight and balance information for the installation of
the Pratt & Whitney Flight Data Acquisition, Storage and Transmission (FAST) system in
the Air Tractor Series aircraft. This report is to be used as a supplement.
The FAST is Pratt & Whitney Engine Services fourth generation monitoring and transmitting
device. It collects data from the aircraft data buses and discrete inputs and stores it in
resident non-volatile memory. Data regarding engine run performance is then extracted,
analyzed and transmitted to a ground station for trend monitoring and maintenance
recommendations. The FAST enables operator to control, quantify, and manage engine
maintenance operations and reduce direct operating costs.
Configuration Options: The following Air Tractor configuration options are approved:
When installing the FAST sysytem on an aircraft with the MVP-50T configuration, the
installation requires a BC-5 Bus Converter to be installed. The BC-5 is approved and

1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Scope
The purpose of this document is to provide users of this product with P&W Engine Services approved
Instructions for Continued Airworthiness for the Air Tractor series aircraft when equipped with the
Pratt & Whitney Flight Data Acquisition, Storage and Transmission (FAST) System. Any deviation
from the procedures described within this document could result in a failure of the product to perform
properly and could possibly result in damage to other systems of the aircraft.
These instructions for continued airworthiness are applicable for the following Air Tractor models:
a. Air Tractor model AT-402, AT-402A and AT-402B aircraft associated with the Transport Canada
Civil Aircraft (TCCA) Type Certificate Data Sheet (TCDS) A-207 (FAA TCDS No. A17SW),
b. Air Tractor model AT-502, AT-502A*, AT-502B and AT-504 aircraft associated with Transport
Canada Civil Aircraft (TCCA) Type Certificate Data Sheet (TCDS) A-164 (FAA TCDS No.
A17SW) and,
c. Air Tractor model AT-602, AT-802 and AT-802A associated with the Transport Canada Civil
Aircraft (TCCA) Type Certificate Data Sheet (TCDS) A-194 (FAA TCDS No. A19SW).
*Note: Installation data also includes the Air Tractor model AT-502A with the PT6A-140AG engine
(Air Tractor designated as the AT-502XP).
Collection: In its data acquisition role, the FAST unit is a passive receiver of information,
automatically recording data received.
Transmission: The data collected is transmitted automatically to a ground station via Cellular or
Wireless LAN protocol when the aircraft is on the ground and the engine is off. Data transmission can
also be manually initiated by the pilot when on the ground with the engine still running through the
Event Mark Switch. The data can also be manually retrieved through an RS-485 connection to a PC
as detailed below.
Manually Retrieving Data: Collected data is accessed through a download serial port located on
FAST processor. Communication with the FAST is achieved via a laptop computer with the P&W
Engine Services Monitor Transfer Module (MonitorTM) installed. The MonitorTM can also be used to
assist maintenance personnel in performing system diagnostics, calibrations, and real-time live sensor
display.
System Configuration: Software configuration files, which customize the operation of the unit to a
particular aircraft, can be loaded to the FAST system manually using ground based software. This
software enables direct communication with the FAST to perform maintenance functions, such as
loading and retrieving configurations, retrieving data files and performing system diagnostics via a
serial connection.
Configuration Options: The following Air Tractor configuration options are approved:
Notes:
[1] Aural Message Generator is optional for all configurations.
[2] BC-5 is installed in accordance with FAA STC SA02135SE.
[3] Existing sensors are utilized.
[4] OAT probe (if not existing) is installed in accordance with Electronics International STC
SA02135SE and Air Tractor installation drawing 53316. Contact EI or Air Tractor for these
components/approvals and maintenance information.
[5] Some new analog installations may be accomplished on aircraft with the MVP-50T
installation. In this instance, maintenance is in accordance with the “New Analog”
configuration.
Power for the FAST processor is provided by the 28 VDC BATT BUS through the 1 amp circuit
breaker labeled FAST BATT. Aircraft switched bus power is provided to the FAST processor, RSN,
Aural Message Generator, and associated components through the 1 amp circuit breaker labelled
FAST BUS. Additional circuit breaker information is provided in Table 1.2. The FAST circuit breakers
are located in the aft right hand area of the engine compartment.
Operation
The FAST processor will start recording automatically when it receives indication that the engine is
“ON”, no pilot action is required. Indication that the engine is “ON” is confirmed via FAST software
triggers for following engine parameters:
Note: Fuel Flow value is stated in LPH to match the aircraft instrumentation and is a
conversion from 100 PPH which is the design specification for the FAST software.
After the aircraft lands and the engine and switched bus power are turned off, FAST will continue to
be powered by the 28 VDC BATT BUS input until the data is successfully transmitted. If the FAST
processor is not able to transmit the data successfully it will only draw power from the battery bus for
a maximum of 30 minutes. Indication that the engine is “OFF” is confirmed via FAST software triggers
for the following engine parameters:
In addition, the Air Tractor mission profile occasionally requires the engine to remain on after landing
while refueling and hopper reloading is conducted. In this instance, the pilot may initiate a manual
transmit of the FAST parameters using the EVENT MARK switch. Indication that the aircraft is on-
ground and available for manual transmit is confirmed via FAST software triggers for the following
aircraft parameters:
The EVENT MARK switch can also be used to manually initiate FAST data transmission when the
aircraft engine is still running and on the ground.
In addition, the EVENT MARK switch can also be used to mute the aural alert messages if required.
The aural alerts are provided for the following engine parameter exceedances:
x Torque
x Inter Turbine Temperature
The Aural Alert System has a power on self-test. When power is turned on, the messages will play in
the following order; “CHECK TEMPERATURE, CHECK TORQUE”.
The aural messages can be muted at any time by depressing the “EVENT MARK” switch.

change colors, flash or display in one solid color. On the side of the BC-5 is a label providing a chart
to decode the VSI. The various indications are as described in Table 3.3.
Troubleshooting
When the system does not function properly (or as you expect it to operate), the first thing that you
must do is identify and isolate the problem. When you have accomplished this, you can effectively
begin to resolve the problem.
The first step in troubleshooting is to isolate each system component and ensure that each
component functions properly when it is run independently. Using the Pratt & Whitney Monitor TM
Program, you can interrogate the system to determine which function or component may have failed.
Occasionally you may have to replace existing components to correct the problem. Determine if the
problem is in the aircraft, FAST processors, wiring, the antenna or configuration of the processor.
Ask the question, can you repeat or recreate the problem. Random events may appear to be related,
but they are not necessarily contributing factors to your problem. You may be experiencing more than
one problem. You must isolate and solve one problem at a time. Log (document) all testing and
problem isolation procedures. You may need to review this document later. This will also prevent you
from duplicating your testing efforts.
Once you have isolated the problem, take the necessary steps to resolve it. Refer to the problem
solutions contained in this document. If you cannot solve the system problems using this
troubleshooting guide, or if the problem persists, contact Pratt & Whitney Engine Service Help Desk.
Pratt & Whitney Engine Service contact information is provided in Section 14.
Before contacting the Help Desk, have someone from your organization with a technical
understanding of the FAST and its application to provide answers to the following questions;
x Engine Type?
x Airframe Type?
x Airframe Tail Number?
x Processor Serial number?
x Is there a problem history?
x Visual processor inspection?
x Transfer Module indications?
x Has the processor worked previously?
x What activity was being performed when failure occurred?
The FAST will monitor and record system failures in a file that can be downloaded and reviewed.
Status of the system can be obtained through the Transfer Module program. Refer to the Transfer
Module User Guide for these procedures.
Detailed troubleshooting for the system processor as well as for the various input channels can be
found in the topic-specific sections that follow.

4 AIRWORTHINESS LIMITATIONS
No new or revised airworthiness limitations arise as a result of this installation.
For Canadian registered aircraft, the Airworthiness Limitations section is approved by the Minister and
specifies maintenance required by an applicable airworthiness or operating rule unless an alternative
program has been approved by the Minister.
For other jurisdictions, excluding the United States, contact the local airworthiness authority.
The Airworthiness Limitations Section is FAA approved and specifies inspections and other
maintenance required under 14 CFR §§ 43.16 and 91.403 of the Federal Aviation Regulations unless
an alternative program has been FAA approved.
5 PERIODIC INSPECTIONS
Scheduled Maintenance Program tasks are to be added to the aircraft operator’s appropriate
maintenance program as follows:
x Proximity to high temperature equipment. Wiring shall be kept separate from high
temperature equipment, such as resistors, exhaust stacks, heating ducts and deicers,
to prevent wire insulation deterioration.
x Wires with different insulation types should not be routed together, where possible.
Certain wire insulations may be easily abraded by other types of wire insulation.
b. Wire Harness Clamps - Inspect for:
x Condition. Make sure any protective material on the wire clamp (i.e. rubber, plastic,
etc.) is in serviceable and functional condition. Clamps should be secured to structure
and wire bundle should be snug in clamp.
x Make sure clamps are not installed over splices.
c. Connectors - Inspect for:
x Condition. Make sure connectors are free of corrosion, moisture, dust and metal
shavings. Check for worn environmental seals, loose contact tension, proper contact
locking, missing seal plugs, missing dummy contacts, etc. Drip loops should be
maintained when connectors are below the level of the harness and tight bends at
connectors should be avoided or corrected.
d. Backshells - Inspect for:
x Condition. Wires may break at connector backshells due to excessive flexing, lack of
strain relief or improper buildup. Loss of backshell bonding may also occur due to these
and other factors.
e. Electrical Conduits and Sleeving - Inspect for:
x Susceptibility to water/moisture entrance. Conduits should not be susceptible to the
entrance of moisture. If moisture going into conduits and sleeving is unavoidable,
provisions should be made in the lower portions of the conduit to drain any moisture
and prevent accumulation.
x Condition. Damage to sleeving and conduits, if not corrected, will often lead to wire
damage. Make sure components are free from corrosion, moisture, dust, and metal
shavings. Check that conduit is secured to structure.
f. Terminations - Inspect for:
x Condition. Terminal lugs and splices are susceptible to mechanical damage, corrosion,
heat damage and chemical contamination. Also, the buildup and nut torque on wire
lugs is critical to their performance.
g. Grounding Points - Inspect for:
x Condition. Grounding points should be checked for security (i.e. tightness) condition of
termination, cleanliness and corrosion. Any grounding points that are corroded or have
lost their protective coating should be repaired and be checked for proper resistance.
CAUTION
Use care when disturbing or removing wire harness/bundles to minimize the possibility of
wire insulation damage or cracking. Care must be especially used in areas with severe
moisture problems. During any repair, modification, or installation work in close proximity
to wire bundles, mounts, connectors and systems, ensure that these areas are protected
from and/or cleaned of metal shavings and debris.
Configuration Options: The following Air Tractor configuration options are approved:
Calculating weight and balance of the FAST System after installation is the responsibility of the
installer. Installation of the above configurations requires various FAST equipment as indicated in
Table 1 per document GN4-T-228-8 Revision B (or later approved revision). Refer to the appropriate
configuration column for applicable installation weights.
