Biographische Notiz
Isang Yun wurde am 17. September 1917 in der südkoreanischen Hafenstadt Tongyong geboren. Bis 1943
studierte er in Korea und Japan Violoncello und Komposition. Als Widerstandskämpfer gegen die japanische
FremdherrSchaft lebte er im Untergrund und kam in politische Haft. 1946 bis 1956 lehrte er an koreanischen
Oberschulen und Universitäten.
1956 bis 1959 vollendete Yun seine Studien in Paris, in Berlin bei Boris Blacher und bei den Darmstädter
Ferienkursen. 1964 wurde Yun in Berlin (West) ansässig, 1971 erwarb er die deutsche Staatsbürgerschaft.
1967 aus Deutschland entführt, war Yun bis 1969 Gefangener der Park-Diktatur in Südkorea, die er späer als
Exilpolitiker bekämpfte.
1969/70 lehrte Yun an der Musikhochschule Hannover, 1970 bis 1985 hatte er eine Kompositionsprofesur an
der Hochschule der Künste Berlin inne. Er war Mitglied der Akademien der Künste in Hamburg und Berlin,
Ehrendoktor der Universität Tübingen und Ehrenmitglied der IGNM. Yun leitete Kompositionskurse in den
USA, in Japan, China, Hongkong, Nordkorea und in mehreren Ländern Europas.
Isang Yun starb am 3. November 1995 in Berlin.

Biographical notes
Isang Yun was born on September 17th, 1917 at Tongyong, South Korea, and received his rst musical
training (cello and composition) in Korea and Japan. Active opposition to the Japanese occupation resulted in
his being imprisoned until the end of World War II. After his release, he spent a period teaching music at
Korean high schools and universities.
In 1956 Yun travelled to Europe, where he continued his studies in Paris und Berlin (with Boris Blacher) and
also attended the International Courses at Darmstadt. He became a resident of West Berlin in 1964, and a West
German citizen in 1971.
In 1967 Yun was abducted from Germany by the Korean regime led by Chung-Hee Park, and was interned in
Korea until 1969. His release was followed by a period of political activity to restore democracy in the
country of his birth.
After retuning to Germany, Yun taught at the Hannover State College of Music (1969-70). From 1970 to
1985 he was professor of composition at the State College of Arts (Hochschule der Künste), Berlin. Among
his many distinctions he was a member of the Hamburg and Berlin Academies of Arts, an honorary doctor at
Tübingen University and honorary member of the ISCM.
Isang Yun died in Berlin on November 3rd, 1995.
