1. Position 2 means the second element
A phrase can be position 1.
Ich arbeite heute.
→ I work today.
Heute arbeite ich.
→ Today I work.
Nach der Arbeit arbeite ich.
→ After work I work.
In Frankfurt wohne ich.
→ I live in Frankfurt.
In Heute arbeite ich, “Heute” is element 1 and “arbeite” is element 2.
Find the first two sentence elements in Nach der Arbeit gehe ich nach Hause.

2. Time expressions
Use time phrases to make sentences more precise.
heute = today | morgen = tomorrow | gestern = yesterday | am Montag = on Monday
am Abend = in the evening | jeden Tag = every day | um acht Uhr = at eight o'clock
Ich arbeite heute.
→ I work today.
Heute arbeite ich.
→ Today I work.
Nach der Arbeit gehe ich nach Hause.
→ After work I go home.
When a time phrase moves to the front, the subject normally follows the verb.

3. Place: where vs where to
Learn these common chunks early.
Ich bin zu Hause.
→ I am at home.
Ich gehe nach Hause.
→ I go home.
Ich wohne in Frankfurt.
→ I live in Frankfurt.
Ich fahre nach Frankfurt.
→ I travel/go to Frankfurt.
Ich arbeite in Deutschland.
→ I work in Germany.
Ich fahre nach Deutschland.
→ I travel/go to Germany.
zu Hause = at home; nach Hause = homewards/to home.

4. Manner and place
Use a neutral order before experimenting.
A useful beginner default is often time → manner → place.
Ich fahre heute mit dem Bus zur Arbeit.
→ I go to work by bus today.
Ich lerne abends zu Hause Deutsch.
→ I study German at home in the evenings.
Wir essen morgen mit Freunden im Restaurant.
→ We are eating at a restaurant with friends tomorrow.
This is a default, not an absolute law. German word order can change for emphasis and information structure.

5. Fronting drill
Move one block and keep the verb under control.
Ich fahre heute mit dem Bus zur Arbeit.
→ I go to work by bus today.
Heute fahre ich mit dem Bus zur Arbeit.
→ Today I go to work by bus.
Mit dem Bus fahre ich heute zur Arbeit.
→ By bus I go to work today.
Put zur Arbeit first.
Put heute first.
Put mit dem Bus first.
Whatever you put first becomes position 1; the conjugated verb still comes next.

6. und, aber, oder, denn
These connect main clauses.
Ich arbeite und ich lerne Deutsch.
→ I work and I learn German.
Ich bin müde, aber ich arbeite.
→ I am tired, but I work.
Möchtest du Tee oder Kaffee?
→ Would you like tea or coffee?
Ich bleibe zu Hause, denn ich bin müde.
→ I stay home because I am tired.
After und, aber, oder, denn, the following main clause keeps normal main-clause word order.

7. Separable verbs
One verb can appear in two places.
Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf.
→ I get up at seven.
Ich kaufe heute ein.
→ I am shopping today.
Ich rufe dich später an.
→ I will call you later.
Ich sehe heute Abend fern.
→ I am watching TV this evening.
With a modal, the full infinitive stays together: Ich muss morgen früh aufstehen.
Ich muss morgen früh aufstehen.
→ I have to get up early tomorrow.

8. weil: verb at the end
The major word-order change after main clauses.
Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich müde bin.
→ I stay at home because I am tired.
Ich lerne Deutsch, weil ich in Deutschland lebe.
→ I learn German because I live in Germany.
Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich arbeiten muss.
→ I stay home because I have to work.
In a weil-clause, the conjugated verb goes to the end: müde bin, leben lebe, arbeiten muss.
Make one weil-sentence about work, one about German, and one about home.

9. wenn and obwohl
Two high-value subordinate conjunctions.
Wenn ich Zeit habe, lerne ich Deutsch.
→ If/When I have time, I study German.
Ich lerne Deutsch, wenn ich Zeit habe.
→ I study German when I have time.
Obwohl es regnet, gehe ich spazieren.
→ Although it is raining, I go for a walk.
Ich gehe spazieren, obwohl es regnet.
→ I go for a walk although it is raining.
If a subordinate clause comes first, the main clause still starts with its conjugated verb: Wenn ich Zeit habe, lerne
ich...

10. Verb-position test
Underline the conjugated verb in every sentence.
Heute arbeite ich zu Hause.
Morgen fahre ich nach Frankfurt.
Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich müde bin.
Wenn ich Zeit habe, lerne ich Deutsch.
Ich muss morgen früh aufstehen.
Nach der Arbeit gehe ich nach Hause.
Check: main clause = verb position 2; subordinate clause = conjugated verb at the end; modal = infinitive at the
end.

11. Translation practice
Build German from structure, not word-for-word English.
Today I work at home.
After work I go home.
Tomorrow I travel to Frankfurt by train.
I learn German because I live in Germany.
If I have time, I study German.
I have to get up at seven.

12. Part 2 mastery
The five rules to keep.
• Main clause: conjugated verb normally in position 2.
• Fronted time/place/manner: subject moves after the verb.
• Separable verb: prefix moves to the end in a main clause.
• weil/wenn/obwohl: conjugated verb goes to the end.
• Modal verb: infinitive stays at the end.
