PASSIVE (PASSIV) – STUDY NOTES
1. What is Passive?
The passive is used when the action is more important than who is doing it.
Active: The teacher explains the grammar.
Passive: The grammar is explained (by the teacher).
German:
Aktiv: Der Lehrer erklärt die Grammatik.
Passiv: Die Grammatik wird (vom Lehrer) erklärt.
2. Formula – Präsens
werden + Partizip II
Active: Der Lehrer erklärt die Grammatik.
English: The teacher explains the grammar.
Passive: Die Grammatik wird erklärt.
English: The grammar is explained.
3. Formula – Präteritum
wurde + Partizip II
Active: Der Lehrer erklärte die Grammatik.
English: The teacher explained the grammar.
Passive: Die Grammatik wurde erklärt.
English: The grammar was explained.
4. Formula – Perfekt
ist + Partizip II + worden
Active: Der Lehrer hat die Grammatik erklärt.
English: The teacher has explained the grammar.
Passive: Die Grammatik ist erklärt worden.
English: The grammar has been explained.
5. Formula – Futur
wird + Partizip II + werden
Active: Der Lehrer wird die Grammatik erklären.
English: The teacher will explain the grammar.
Passive: Die Grammatik wird erklärt werden.
English: The grammar will be explained.
6. Common Structure
• The receiver of the action becomes the subject.
• The doer is optional and introduced with von (by).
Anna schreibt den Brief. = Anna writes the letter.
Der Brief wird von Anna geschrieben. = The letter is being written by Anna.
7. Practice Examples
1. Peter kocht das Essen. = Peter cooks the food.
Das Essen wird von Peter gekocht. = The food is cooked by Peter.
2. Die Polizei stoppt das Auto. = The police stops the car.
Das Auto wird von der Polizei gestoppt. = The car is stopped by the police.
3. Sie bauen ein neues Haus. = They build a new house.
Ein neues Haus wird gebaut. = A new house is being built.

Subject (receiver) + werden + Partizip II (+ von + doer)
Remember:
Präsens → wird + Partizip II
Präteritum → wurde + Partizip II
Perfekt → ist + Partizip II + worden
Futur → wird + Partizip II + werden
