Deutsche Konjunktionen
A Comprehensive Guide to German Conjunctions
Nebenordnende, unterordnende und Doppelkonjunktionen
This guide covers the three families of German conjunctions:
1. Nebenordnende Konjunktionen — coordinating conjunctions that join two equal, independent
clauses without changing word order.
2. Unterordnende Konjunktionen — subordinating conjunctions that introduce a dependent clause
(Nebensatz) and send the conjugated verb to the end of that clause.
3. Doppelkonjunktionen — paired / correlative conjunctions used together in two parts to link words,
phrases, or clauses.
Every German example sentence is followed by its English translation, as requested.
Word Order at a Glance
Understanding word order is the key to using each conjunction type correctly.
Type Effect on word order Pattern
Nebenordnend None — each clause keeps normal verb-second (V2) Satz 1 und Satz 2 (Subj–Verb–...)
(coordinating) order. Sits in 'position 0', outside the clause count.
Unterordnend Sends the conjugated verb to the very end of its own ..., weil er müde ist.
(subordinating) (subordinate) clause.
Doppelkonjunktion Depends on the pair: most act like coordinators (V2); Je mehr..., desto besser wird es.
(paired) 'je...desto' triggers verb-last then verb-first.
Tip: If a subordinate clause (with the verb at the end) comes before the main clause, the whole subordinate clause
counts as "position 1", so the main clause's conjugated verb comes immediately after the comma (position 2):
"Weil er müde ist, geht er früh ins Bett." (Because he is tired, he goes to bed early.)
1. Nebenordnende Konjunktionen (Coordinating
Conjunctions)
These conjunctions connect two independent clauses, phrases, or words of equal grammatical rank.
They occupy 'position 0' — they do NOT count as part of the clause and do NOT change word order.
Each clause they join keeps normal verb-second (Subject–Verb...) order. The five classic ones (aber,
denn, und, sondern, oder) are often remembered with the acronym ADUSO.
und
Meaning: and
Usage note: Adds information; can join words, phrases, or clauses. If the subject is the same in both clauses, it
may be dropped after 'und'.
