Grammatik – Modul 3: um zu / ohne zu / (an)statt zu +
Infinitiv
These three constructions replace subordinate clauses and make your German more elegant. They are
used when BOTH clauses share the same subject.
① um … zu + Infinitiv — PURPOSE (in order to)
Expresses the purpose or goal of an action. Replaces damit-clauses when subjects are the same.
Ich lerne Deutsch, um in Deutschland zu arbeiten.
I am learning German in order to work in Germany.
Er macht ein Praktikum, um Erfahrungen zu sammeln.
He is doing an internship in order to gain experience.
Sie besucht Kurse, um ihre Chancen zu verbessern.

③ (an)statt … zu + Infinitiv — INSTEAD OF doing sth.
Expresses that one action substitutes another. Both 'statt' and 'anstatt' are correct.
Statt zu klagen, sollte man Lösungen suchen.
Instead of complaining, one should look for solutions.
Er geht früher nach Hause, anstatt Überstunden zu machen.
He goes home earlier instead of working overtime.
Statt an einem Seminar teilzunehmen, lernt sie allein.
Instead of attending a seminar, she learns on her own.
Connector Meaning Function Word Order

ohne … zu without doing dass-clause (same ohne + Infinitiv at end
subject)
Replaces (an)statt
statt/anstatt + Infinitiv at
(an)statt … zu instead of doing dass-clause (same
end
subject)
■■ Critical Grammar Rules
✘ All three constructions: the INFINITIVE goes to the very END of the clause.
✘ With separable verbs: prefix stays attached in infinitive: um anzufangen, ohne aufzuhören.
✘ With modal + infinitive: use the infinitive of the modal: um arbeiten zu können (in order to be able to
work).
✘ DIFFERENT subject → use damit / ohne dass / anstatt dass (with conjugated verb): Er erklärt es,
damit sie es versteht.
✘ Never use 'zu' with modal verbs directly: WRONG: um zu müssen — CORRECT: um … zu
können/müssen is rare; restructure the sentence.
Subordinate Clause vs. Infinitive Construction — Quick Contrast
