Sentence Formation
● Ich spiele Fußball. (I play football.) — Simple sentence: verb comes in the second
position
● Spielst du Fußball? (Do you play football?) — yes/no questions, the verb comes first and
pronoun second
● Was machst du? (What are you doing?) — W-questions, the question word (e.g., Was,
Wie, Wo) comes first, then the verb, and then the subject
● Ich muss Deutsch lernen. (I have to learn German.) — The modal verb comes in the
second position and the main verb goes to the end of the sentence
● Der Hund läuft. (The dog runs.) —- The subject is in the nominative case (the subject of
the sentence).
● Ich sehe den Hund. (I see the dog.) —- The direct object is in the accusative case (the
object that receives the action of the verb).
● Ich spiele Fußball, aber mein Freund spielt Basketball. (I play football, but my friend
plays basketball.) — The word order remains unchanged for both parts of the sentence
in combined sentences
