PART 1 — LESSON SCRIPT
Teacher script with timings — 50 minutes total
⏱ Warm-Up & Recap (0–5 min)
Teacher Guten Tag! Wie geht es euch? (Good day! How are you all?)
Students Gut, danke! / Es geht. / Nicht so gut. (Good, thanks! / OK. / Not so good.)
Teacher Gut! Let's quickly review. Who can tell me — what article do we use for
'Buch'?
Students Das Buch!
Teacher Sehr gut! And 'Mann'? And 'Stadt'?
Students Der Mann! Die Stadt!
Teacher Wunderbar! Now, can someone count from 1 to 10 in German? (Call on a
student.)
Teacher Perfect. Today we go further — we learn ACTION WORDS (Verben) and
how to talk about our day! Sind Sie bereit? Are you ready?
📖 Section 1: Present Tense Verbs (Verben) (5–18 min)
Teacher In German, verbs change their endings depending on who is doing the
action. This is called conjugation. Let's look at a regular verb together:
SPIELEN (to play).
Person German English
ich (I) spiele I play
du (you, informal) spielst you play
er / sie / es (he/she/it) spielt he / she / it plays
wir (we) spielen we play
ihr (you all) spielt you all play
Sie / sie (you formal / spielen they play
they)
Teacher Notice the pattern! The stem is SPIEL- and we add: -e, -st, -t, -en, -t, -en.
Let's say it together: Ich spiele... du spielst... er spielt... (pause for
students to repeat each one)
Teacher Now here are the most important verbs you need for daily life. Repeat
each one after me!
Infinitive Meaning Example Sentence
spielen to play Ich spiele Fußball.
lernen to learn Wir lernen Deutsch.
wohnen to live/reside Sie wohnt in Berlin.
machen to do / make Was machst du?
kaufen to buy Er kauft ein Buch.
trinken to drink Ich trinke Milch.
essen to eat Wir essen Brot.
gehen to go Sie geht in die Schule.
schlafen to sleep Ich schlafe um 10 Uhr.
aufstehen to get up Ich stehe um 7 Uhr auf.
Teacher Good! Note that 'essen' and 'aufstehen' are slightly irregular — we will look
at those in more detail. For now, focus on using them in sentences!
Teacher Quick practice! I say the English, you say the German verb. Ready? 'To
buy'...
Students Kaufen!
Teacher 'To sleep'... 'To learn'... 'To drink'... (continue for all 10 verbs)
🌅 Section 2: Daily Routine (Tagesablauf) (18–30 min)
Teacher You already read about Anna's day in Lesson 2 — Mein Tag. Now we
build YOUR Tagesablauf — your daily routine! First, let's learn the key
time words.
German Time Expression English
Am Morgen / morgens In the morning
Am Vormittag In the late morning
Am Mittag / mittags At midday / noon
Am Nachmittag In the afternoon
Am Abend / abends In the evening
In der Nacht / nachts At night
um ___ Uhr at ___ o'clock
dann then
danach after that
zuerst first
zuletzt lastly / finally
Teacher Now let's read a model routine together. I'll read it once, then we read it
together.
Mein Tagesablauf — Model Text
Ich heiße Bhagyashri. Ich stehe um halb sieben auf. Zuerst dusche ich und dann
frühstücke ich. Am Morgen trinke ich Kaffee und esse Toast. Dann gehe ich zur Uni. Am
Nachmittag lerne ich Deutsch. Am Abend koche ich und esse mit meiner Familie. Zuletzt
lese ich ein Buch und schlafe um elf Uhr.
Teacher Excellent! Now let me ask you — Was macht Bhagyashri am Morgen?
(What does Bhagyashri do in the morning?)
Students Sie duscht und frühstückt! / Sie trinkt Kaffee!
Teacher Sehr gut! And was macht sie am Abend?
Students Sie kocht und isst mit ihrer Familie!
⏰ Section 3: Telling the Time (Uhrzeit) (30–42 min)
Teacher Now one of the most useful things in German — telling the time! The key
question is: Wie spät ist es? (What time is it?) Or: Wie viel Uhr ist es?
Let's learn the answers.
German English
Es ist ein Uhr. It is 1 o'clock.
Es ist zwei Uhr. It is 2 o'clock.
Es ist halb drei. It is half past two. (2:30)
Es ist Viertel nach vier. It is quarter past four. (4:15)
Es ist Viertel vor fünf. It is quarter to five. (4:45)
Es ist zehn nach sechs. It is ten past six. (6:10)
Es ist zwanzig vor sieben. It is twenty to seven. (6:40)
Es ist Mittag. It is noon.
Es ist Mitternacht. It is midnight.
Teacher IMPORTANT: 'halb drei' means HALF PAST TWO — not half past three!
In German, 'halb' looks FORWARD to the next hour, not back. So halb
fünf = 4:30, halb acht = 7:30. Repeat after me: halb drei... halb fünf... halb
zwölf...
Teacher Now I will say a time, and you tell me what time it is in English. Ready? Es
ist halb neun...
Students Eight thirty! / Half past eight!
Teacher Richtig! Es ist Viertel nach drei...
Students Quarter past three! Three fifteen!
Teacher Perfekt! Let's now combine time with our daily routine verbs. I'll model first:
'Ich stehe um halb sieben auf.' Now you try with your own time!
✅ Wrap-Up & Summary (42–50 min)
Teacher Wunderbar! Let's summarise what we learned today. (Write on board or
say aloud):
Today we learned:

2. 10 key action verbs: spielen, lernen, wohnen, machen, kaufen, trinken, essen,

Teacher Hausaufgaben! (Homework!) For next class, write 5 sentences about
YOUR daily routine in German using the verbs and time words from today.
Bring it next lesson!
Teacher Tschüss und bis nächste Woche! (Goodbye and see you next week!)
Students Tschüss! Auf Wiedersehen!
PART 2 — STUDENT LESSON NOTES
Lektion 3: Verben, Tagesablauf & Uhrzeit
1. Present Tense Verbs (Präsens)
German verbs change their endings based on the subject. Most regular verbs follow this
pattern:
Person Ending Example: lernen (to learn)
ich -e ich lerne
du -st du lernst
er / sie / es -t er lernt
wir -en wir lernen
ihr -t ihr lernt
Sie / sie -en sie lernen
Key Verbs to Know
Verb (Infinitive) Meaning ich-form
spielen to play ich spiele
lernen to learn ich lerne
wohnen to live ich wohne
machen to do / make ich mache
kaufen to buy ich kaufe
trinken to drink ich trinke
essen* to eat ich esse
gehen to go ich gehe
schlafen* to sleep ich schlafe
aufstehen* to get up ich stehe auf
* essen, schlafen, and aufstehen have small irregularities — practise them carefully!
* aufstehen is a SEPARABLE verb: 'auf' splits off and goes to the END: Ich stehe um 7 Uhr
AUF.
2. Daily Routine (Tagesablauf)
Use these time expressions to describe when things happen:
German English
Am Morgen / morgens In the morning
Am Vormittag Late morning
Am Mittag At noon
Am Nachmittag In the afternoon
Am Abend / abends In the evening
In der Nacht At night
zuerst first
dann / danach then / after that
zuletzt finally / lastly
Model Routine
Ich stehe um halb sieben auf.
Zuerst dusche ich und dann frühstücke ich.
Am Morgen trinke ich Kaffee und esse Toast.
Dann gehe ich zur Uni.
Am Nachmittag lerne ich Deutsch.
Am Abend koche ich und esse mit meiner Familie.
Zuletzt lese ich ein Buch und schlafe um elf Uhr.
3. Telling the Time (Uhrzeit)
Key questions:
• Wie spät ist es? = What time is it?
• Wie viel Uhr ist es? = What time is it? (more formal)
• Um wie viel Uhr...? = At what time...?
German English / Time
Es ist drei Uhr. It is 3:00
Es ist halb vier. It is 3:30 ⚠️(half BEFORE four)
Es ist Viertel nach drei. It is 3:15
Es ist Viertel vor vier. It is 3:45
Es ist zehn nach fünf. It is 5:10
Es ist zwanzig vor acht. It is 7:40
Es ist Mittag. It is 12:00 (noon)
Es ist Mitternacht. It is 00:00 (midnight)
⚠️ Important Rule — halb!
In German, 'halb' (half) points FORWARD to the NEXT hour.
halb drei = 2:30 (half way TO three, not half past three!)
halb sechs = 5:30 | halb zwölf = 11:30 | halb acht = 7:30
